Does asking a co worker for a date list as a sexual harassment
Druvius comments on Jan 8, 2018:
As others have said, a little too vague. Asking once, probably not. Still, the bottom line is hitting on people other than in bars or mixers is problematic. Unless they are CLEARLY signalling interest.
Anyone find themselves angry at both political parties?
Druvius comments on Jan 8, 2018:
Both parties, with a few outliers in each, are 100% the tools of the bankers, giant corporations, and the pentagon. Been that way since the late seventies, since then the poor and middle class have stagnated while the people at the top got ever richer. As Calvin Trillon said "America has one political party, the Business Party. It just has two factions."
Religious Homosexuals?

Where is your stance on tattoos?
Druvius comments on Jan 6, 2018:
Your body, your choice. Have known people who regretted facial and hand tattoos, cause, you know, ten years down the road you might want to interview for that six figure dream job. My brother is covered with them, but yeah, he puts on a suit and tie and no one knows. :)
Ancient Star Maps Around The World
Druvius comments on Jan 5, 2018:
I would love there to be evidence discovered that aliens had visited Earth in the past. It would be amazing on several levels. And I have followed the subject in great depth for more than 40 years. So far, it's all wishful thinking or just plain exploitive quackery. It would have been incredibly easy for star travelling aliens to give us info that was UNMISTAKEABLY of alien origin. Like a depiction of Saturn's rings. A map of the far side of the moon. A model of the solar system including Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto. Jupiter with four large moons. Mars with two tiny moons. Instead of this, ancient alien enthusiasts present us with stuff like the link, dubious stretched interpretations of stuff that archeologists have no trouble explaining without invoking aliens. It would be amazing, but so far, no evidence has been presented that is even remotely compelling.
Are there any creative writers in the group?
Druvius comments on Jan 5, 2018:
No, though not sure what you mean by an "athiest belief." I know a lot of my readers are religious or even theistic, and since I would like them to both read my writing and think about it, I make frequent use of religious language and the like. Heck, you can find a Bible quote to support almost any position, it's incredibly handy that way.
Why can't theists back up their claims with empirical evidence?
Druvius comments on Jan 4, 2018:
Because they don't have any. Was this a trick question? ;)
Have souls really been debunked?
Druvius comments on Jan 4, 2018:
Since the soul is basically an undefined mythical concept, technically it can't be debunked. Like you can't prove angels (or God) don't exist, because they are undefinable in any scientific sense. That being said, some of the latest thinking on consciousness posits that it is a quantum state, and thus timeless. Could this be our soul? Maybe, but pretty speculative. Dunno, will find out when I die, as will we all.
If any of this comes even close to panning out, we are on the cusp of something of paradigm crushing...
Druvius comments on Jan 4, 2018:
Since this was from 2015, guessing it has not panned out. In fact it quickly was more or less dismissed: https://www.astrobio.net/mars/follow-signs-ancient-life-mars-rover-photos/
Do you think we should challenge North Korea?
Druvius comments on Jan 4, 2018:
No, risking war and/or attacking North Korea is foolish. This is a problem that can be solved with diplomacy, we should sit down and work out a peace treaty. There is no way on Earth China will allow North Korea to ever be absorbed into South Korea (nor should they,) so best course of action is to stop making threats and stop the sanctions. The more we let North Korea interact with the world, the more internal pressure will bring about reform.

Druvius comments on Jan 4, 2018:
As far as HRCs competance goes, she wasn't competant to lead her party to victory over Trump and his clown car campaign. So trying to convince me she was competant to lead the USA is a waste of time. It was the worst election of my life, Ramsey Bolton vs Cersei Lannister, some choice. I hope we have someone better running for the Dems in 2020, but seeing as they seem to have learned nothing from their defeat, I'm not optimistic. :(
Do you consider family to be by blood or whose always been there for you?
Druvius comments on Jan 4, 2018:
I'm with the both crowd, I have friends whom I consider family.
Will we ever have world peace?
Druvius comments on Jan 4, 2018:
We've done it before. The mid seventies was the last time. "War is defined as an active conflict that has claimed more than 1,000 lives. Of the past 3,400 years, humans have been entirely at peace for 268 of them, or just 8 percent of recorded history." Not going to happen any time soon with the cabal now running Washington though.
Since you all have been non believers, has it ever crossed your mind "what if im wrong"?
Druvius comments on Jan 3, 2018:
Not really. But if I die and suddenly find myself facing God, Allah, or hopefully Freyja I will be able to look them in the eye and take responsibility for my life. Fólkvangr sounds good by me if there is an afterlife. So it doesn't matter if I am wrong.

The Eternal Return : Will we re-live this life?
Druvius comments on Jan 3, 2018:
Pretty sure this possibility, at least in the literal sense, has been ruled out under current cosmology. IE, it looks like there will be no "Big Crunch." That being said, there are models that say there are, have been, and will be an infinite number of universes. If that's the case, then yes, this may have all played out an infinite number of times and will play out an infinite number of times. I find it more incomprehesible than depressing.
Do you think that population needs to be regulated?
Druvius comments on Jan 3, 2018:
No. Regulating who has children is called eugenics and has a truly ugly history. In terms of limiting population, female education works wonders. Not turning whole swaths of the Earth into refugee generating failed states would help too, since refugee camps typically have the highest birthrates around. In the long run, nature bats last, so if we don't get our act together, our population will be brought under control in other ways.

Cemeteries, creepy, or peaceful?
Druvius comments on Jan 2, 2018:
You are a weirdo. So am I. I love going through old cemetaries and trying to imagine the stories the headstones tell. People whose lives spanned great periods, the changes they lived through. Family tragedies, loves that lasted for decades. The things that were important to them. Sometimes I think the only immortality is when people think of you after you are gone. And in many cases in old cemetaries, maybe the only people who still think about them at all are the occaisional visitors who wonder at their headstones. So many have gone before, and they all had loves and dreams and lives. Someday the only thing left is an old stone. And they are the lucky ones.
If you were a museum curator, what would the theme be?
Druvius comments on Jan 2, 2018:
Interesting question. Tool museum at first pass. Tools through history especially. I'm a handyman and a history buff, so this would be of great interest to me. Including such amazing things as the Antikythera mechanism, tools used to make the pyramids, the first vacuum cleaners (They were horse drawn, the first time they vacuumed Westminster Abby 12 cartloads of vacuumings were hauled away) and countless other tools throughout history. I'm defining tool rather broadly, maybe a tool and technology museum would be more accurate. There would be a hammer wing, the original tool, there must be thousands of them. (Late medieval knights didn't carry swords, since they were largely useless against full plate armor, they carried hammers specially designed to damage armor.) A Roman wing, they had human operated cranes and special devices for rolling down roads to measure how long they were. Heck, there's a Roman tool we still don't even know what it was used for. That's just for starters. Now I just need to win the Megamillions lottery ...
Protecting young men from the evil of the world with blindfolds. Ridiculous.
Druvius comments on Jan 2, 2018:
Well, it makes infinitely more sense than the religious people going around telling women how to dress. They are averting their gaze to avoid seeing what they disaprove of. Doesn't hurt anyone, so hey, they can do what they want. It's called freedom of religion.

Does evolution occur in leaps or slowly, both?
Druvius comments on Jan 2, 2018:
Well, both. However, you can't suddenly get a huge spurt as you propose because that would involve a huge change in an organism's genes. The chances of an organism giving birth to something with that many mutated genes ... and it still being viable ... is zero. Sometimes a mutation to a few genes can indeed lead to pretty much a new animal, but nothing that dramatic. The only example I can think of off hand is the domestic cat, there was some research awhile back that the domestic cat arose because a single African Wildcat had three mutant genes that made it non-aggressive towards humans. It wandered into an Egyptian village, the villagers said, wow, look, that wildcat isn't afraid of people ... AND LOOK WHAT IT'S DOING TO THE RATS IN THE GRANARY!! The rest is history. OK, the later part is my conjecture, but not the three mutations part.

Should the U. S. hold a Constitutional Convention?
Druvius comments on Jan 2, 2018:
If they had a consitutional convention today, they would almost certainly butcher the job and gut what's left of our rights and political freedoms.
Should Christmas be renamed "Family Day?"
Druvius comments on Jan 2, 2018:
I don't see that any good would come of renaming it. It would further polarize and politicize something that should never have been politicized in the first place. In a free country people can celebrate whatever holidays they want however they want. And a big FU to Mr Trump for once again taking the lowest possible road.

Druvius comments on Jan 2, 2018:
No. They're just words, if the intent behind them is genuine, they are positive. I say things like "God Bless" and "Jesus wept" regularly, not because of any literal belief, but because they are ritual words that give people comfort or express how I feel.
does desire to convert someone to atheistic belief sometimes undercut our abiding love for science?

Why would anyone want to convert someone to atheism? Only people insecure in their beliefs want to convert others. At best.
Still Pissed Off about The Last Jedi... Why do people get so passionate about Star Wars?
Druvius comments on Jan 2, 2018:
People get passionate about all sorts of things. Human nature I guess. People build up a fantasy in their mind about something like this, and are conflicted when it doesn't play out according to their fantasy? Heck, some people do it with relationships too, where it's not only silly, it's actually harmful. Deep seated control issues?
Lol. I actually laughed out loud.

Rapture by 2018?
Druvius comments on Jan 1, 2018:
Since at least 2800 BC: http://www.abhota.info/end1.htm My favoirite: "Drawing from theology and astrology, German prophet Johann Jacob Zimmerman determined that the world would end in the fall of 1694. Zimmerman gathered a group of pilgrims and made plans to go to America to welcome Jesus back to Earth. However, he died in February of that year, on the very day of departure. Johannes Kelpius took over leadership of the cult, which was known as Woman in the Wilderness, and they completed their journey to the New World. Fall came and went and, needless to say, the cultists were profoundly disappointed at having traveled all the way across the Atlantic just to be stood up by Jesus. (Cohen p.19-20)"
Are you bothered that we count time based on when Jesus was supposedly born?
Druvius comments on Jan 1, 2018:
No, It's pretty arbitrary in any event. Maybe someday there will be some globe shattering event that will make us want to restart. As an aside, boy, some Christians can get as worked up about BCE and CE as they do about Happy Holidays.

The bible is BS.
Druvius comments on Dec 31, 2017:
Can't argue the point, the OT is a Bronze Age morality fable whose science and morality is, well, Bronze Age at best. And then there's the talking snakes and other magical woo. Right. The NT isn't much better, even if it avoids some of the most horrid excesses of the OT (Leviticus comes to mind) it's still full of magical woo. And yet here we are, it's still possibly the most read book of all time, and still influencing people today. Saying it's BS may be true, but that's hardly going to have an impact on your typical Christian. And the real problem, to my way of thinking, is those that have hijacked the Bible to preach hate. I mean the only thing that every made Jesus angry was bankers, he never said a word about gay people. And yet here people are, thinking Jesus condones hatred. Jesus wept. Anyhow, sorry to ramble, it's an interesting if troubling topic.

Magical Thinking
Druvius comments on Dec 31, 2017:
Try to spot it when it happens and don't let it interfere with your life in a negative way. Other than that, have fun with it! It's not just human nature, it is literally how our brains evolved to process reality. The big downside these days is that the science of advertising and propaganda has grown increasingly effective at manipulating these tendencies to affect how we think. I don't know the answer to that one. Interesting article.

Druvius comments on Dec 31, 2017:

Druvius comments on Dec 31, 2017:
Lol, yeah, that's a good one. Can't recall any good personal anecdotes, but I like how the Church handled it when medievil scholars pointed out that everything Jesus said and did can be found in earlier writings attributed to earlier prophets, you'd think if Jesus eas the one and only, he'd have something new to say? Well, turns out Satan knew Jesus was coming, so he sent out earlier imposters to confuse people! Impeccable logic, problem solved. @@

Life on other Planets? Yes or No?
Druvius comments on Dec 31, 2017:
While the probabilities are superficially good, until we actually find life elsewhere, we can't say for sure. If the odds of life arising are low enough, we may be unique. Like the odds of a monkey typing Hamlet by chance. Doesn't matter how many monkeys you have, it's odds are so low as to be effectively zero.
Christian terrorists are quite smart
Druvius comments on Dec 31, 2017:
Terrorism is a tactic, not an ideology. So there really isn't any such thing as a terrorist, it's just a label applied to people we disagree with. And as a tactic, it varies. Since 1967 about 42% of groups using terrorism stopped after acheiving their goals and being mainstreamed into the political process. Think the IRA. 40% were defeated by police and intelligience services. 8% were defeated by war, which really should make people question the wisdom of the"war on terror." And 10% of the time they simply won. Like any other tactic, sometimes it's dumb, sometimes it's remarkably effective. 9/11 would be a great example of the later. So no, characterising terrorists as dumb is sophmoric thinking at best.

Druvius comments on Dec 30, 2017:
If I have a religious friend or loved one who would be comforted by me saying "I'll pray for you" I say "I'll pray for you." Druvius comments on Dec 30, 2017:
Sadly education has been on a downward spiral in the US for decades with the rise of home schooling and charter schools, with millions of Americans now having grown up more indoctrinated than educated. And it's getting worse, not better. I am all for tolerance too, but alas find myself in a country growing increasingly less tolerant. I don't think it's going to end well.

Druvius comments on Dec 30, 2017:

Druvius comments on Dec 29, 2017:
The reason Africa and the Middle East are a disaster is because of centuries of European, and then American ongoing wars, invasions, meddlings, and colonialism. And when some nation in the region starts to become a modern secular nation ... we destroyed them. Look at Iraq, Saddam was working very hard to turn it into a modern nation .... he had this crazy idea that the Mideast's oil wealth shouldbe used to develop the Mideast. Look what they did to him. You are basically regurgitating western propaganda, the world's problems are far more complex than "their religion is bad."
Extra terrestrial life
Druvius comments on Dec 29, 2017:
Well, SETI has come up with nada for decades, and a number of promising searches have found nothing. At this point it seems clear that intelligent life such as us is very rare, or worse, it's an evolutionary dead end. If we do discover same, while obviously it would have some profound implications, I don't think it would change us much. Unless they have stumbled upon some fix for the unrestrained greed that has caused thousands of human civilizations to collapse and self-immolate, a path we have gone quite far down in our current global civilization.
Do you believe the 'Fairness Doctrine' should be restored?
Druvius comments on Dec 29, 2017:
Yes, in some ways ending it was the beginning of the end for educated public discourse in the USA. Ending it is what allowed the rise of Faux News, Rush Limbaugh, and their ilk. And now even the mainstream media has pretty much gone the way of Faux News. It should be restored, by the republic has been so propagandized and damaged the past three decades I don't see much hope for a return to sanity.

Precognition
Druvius comments on Dec 29, 2017:
Yes. Have had dreams that came true. Sometimes knew something was about to happen, like the time I knew a car accident was imminent and took off my glasses. Alas, every incident can be explained without precognition. And tons of scientific research has never been able to demonstrate precognition. So we can safely say, actual precognition doesn't exist, the future hasn't happened yet and is known to no one.

We are living in a Golden Age of space exploration. When I was a kid everything we knew about tbe Solar System pretty much fit in the first few pages of an atlas. Now have visited every planet, landed probes on several of them, and including some moons. Never ceases to amaze, I visit APOD regularly.
