LINKTeen who left baby in New Mexico dumpster didn't know she was pregnant until day before birth, police say
This is part of what is wrong with education in America. An 18 year old should have basic knowledge of biology to know what pregnancy is. It is also a parenting fail in the same way. Alexis Avila, 18, was charged with attempted murder and felony child abuse after the baby was discovered in the dumpster. By Marlene Lenthang An Eighteen-year-old mother who threw her newborn baby in a New Mexico dumpster last week didn’t know she was pregnant until the day before she gave birth, ...

Heather Cox Richardson The struggle between the Trump-backed forces of authoritarianism and those of us defending democracy is coming down to the fight over whether the Democrats can get the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act through the Senate. It’s worth reading what’s actually in the bills because, to my mind, it is bananas that they are in any way controversial. The Freedom to Vote Act is a trimmed version of the For the People Act the House passed at the...

Heather Cox Richardson January 11, 2022 (Tuesday) The United States came perilously close to losing its democracy in 2020, when an incumbent president refused to accept the results of an election he lost and worked with supporters to declare himself the winner and remain in power. We are learning more about how that process happened. Yesterday, the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol revealed that it has been looking at attempts to ...

Heather Cox Richardson There are two big stories for the coming week: diplomatic conversations with Russia and the passage of voting rights legislation in America. The two are related. In the last several months, Russia has massed nearly 100,000 troops on the border of Ukraine, and its president, Vladimir Putin, has threatened to invade the independent country again, as Russian troops did in 2014. Ukraine amended its constitution in 2019 to enable the country to join the European Union and...

Heather Cox Richardson Just before sunrise on a November day in 1861, Massachusetts abolitionist Julia Ward Howe woke up in the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C. She got out of bed, found a pen, and began to write about the struggle in which the country was engaged: could any nation “conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal” survive, or would such a nation inevitably descend into hierarchies and minority rule? LINKA single sentence that perfectly captures the utter madness of the Trump era
In an interview with Donald Trump earlier this week, conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt said something truly breathtaking. "You know, Mr. President, you and I disagree about the election, but we agree on so much," Hewitt told Trump, segueing into a conversation about China's hypersonic missiles. Talk about an other-than-that-how-was-the-play-Mrs. Lincoln moment! That Hewitt uttered that line without irony is a telling window into how conservatives have found ways to rationalize ...

LINKthe best office holiday party date story of all time — Ask a Manager
EVERY time I read this it makes me laugh. by ALISON GREEN on DECEMBER 10, 2021 A couple of years ago, someone shared what I consider to be the best holiday date story of all time, and it must be shared here again. Enjoy: When I was fresh out of college, a dude in my social circle invited me to his fancy work Christmas party. He was a teacher, so I’d kind of assumed I was there as friend to act as a buffer between well-intentioned female colleagues who wanted to set him up with one ...

KAMALA HARRIS IS ACTUALLY RIGHT ABOUT THE BLUETOOTH HEADPHONES, THERE ARE VALID CRITICISMS OF THE VP — BUT THIS AIN’T IT. Bluetooth-Phobic VP In a classic instance of news-that-shouldn’t-be-news news, Vice President Kamala Harris came under fire this week for the outrageous decision to not use Bluetooth headphones. Heather Cox Richardson Today, in Whole Woman’s Health v. Jackson, the Supreme Court undermined the federal protection of civil rights that has shaped our world since the 1950s. The case asked whether opponents of Texas’s S.B. 8, the so-called Heartbeat Bill, could bring a federal case to block the law, which gets around normal challenges by putting private individuals, rather than the state itself, in charge of enforcing it. By a vote of 5 to 4, the court said they could sue, but it ...

This article was originally published in the newsletter of the Secular Humanist Society of New York (SHSNY). As a humanist, I’ve always been asked a basic question about my belief system and it goes something like this, “David, you don’t believe in god so where do you get your morals?” Since I am an educator, I always take this time of either negative challenge or honest reflection from the questioner and attempt to explain briefly what humanism is all about as concisely as possible....

Jan 2019. Quilt for 2 year old granddaughter, just learning her colors. Her mama wanted it to be a rainbow quilt.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
