My answer would be not that we "get better" at grief but perhaps we learn to view it a different way. My father died back in 1995 and it was unexpected. I was devastated for years... Beating myself up for all the times I *could* have gone somewhere with him or participated in something with him... Or even asked him more questions. Questions I still carry 24 years later. Slowly, over time, I realized this is normal behavior. Over the years the anguish was replaced by pride as my father taught me a lot about life and how to live it. I started reveling in that. My mom died last year... It was expected as she was in and out of the hospital 6 times that year. She knew... We all knew. We said everything there was to say. The state of Virginia actually closed the General Assembly that day in her honor when they heard of her passing. When I received the video of that... I cried like a baby. I was so proud of everything she had accomplished! Now... When I think of either parent... I feel absolutely no sadness... I just swell with pride and smile! They had their faults (as we all do) but they were the two greatest people I ever met! So.... Look for the things that make you smile!

I work from home but belong to a sales team for the mid-atlantic. We used to have a few back stabbers on the team... But they usually weed themselves out. People usually see them for what they are... Especially in the sales arena. They are a cancer to their employer.

I quit and find a new job! I have only ever had 3 jobs that I loved in my 57 years. One was out of school and I learned to paint signs. But also learned carpentry, electronics, welding, etc. It was fun but didn't pay well. I had a friend that was younger than I was by a few years. He seemingly had it all. He told me I should get into sales... So I did. I learned a lot and went far. In the 90's I worked sales for a lender and fell in love with my job. They were bought out and I took a lucrative severance package instead of staying. I ran my own business for a while. (Too many headaches for me.) Worked a few jobs I hated then back to another lender in sales where I work now and I LOVE my job. I work from home, set my own hours, great pay and awesome benefits... It's like a working vacation for me now. I am a firm believer that if you love what you do... Not only will you never work a day in your life... You usually also excel at what you do. My potential is unlimited... Or I should say... It is only limited to my willingness to work and my imagination. There are only three categories.... Sales, Service or Talent... Pick one you like!

I've always chalked that up to being a colloquialism. But there can be difficulty deciphering between colloquialism and sheer stupidity. I used to work with a guy who pronounced concrete as "concreek" and worked with a woman who added a T instead of a K as in DEST, as in sitting and working at a DESK. My number one irritant are people who sell homes and they STILL call themselves REALITORS.... I always steer clear of someone who cannot correctly pronounce what they do. I think it is fun to bring back old lingo from the past though. My latest favorite... answer anyone who asks me how I am doing by saying, "Everything is Jake!" Meaning, everything is just fine. This is a phrase from the 20s and 30s that for some reason fell out of favor. (As often happens)

I knew when I prayed for a bike and didn't get it! Kidding aside... I was raised by my parents who were Unitarians. (Look it up) They wanted me to be well enough rounded to make my own decisions when the time came. I could not have had better parents and I revered them and how they handled things. I sometimes wish they would have pushed me more (sports in high school instead of working a job) but it was not their way and I now see the wisdom of their choices. The book I read was the Bible... Several forms of it over the years, when I was 12 to late teens. In researching how Christianity got its start and grew... It became clear to me that religion was all a crock... Only designed to give meaning to life and to keep people in line. Obviously there were other reasons... I started identifying as Atheist a long time ago and it wasn't until I found this place that I decided that I guess I am truly Agnostic. To me, "faith" is trust that is earned over time. Trust comes from proof and evidence. Now I know there isn't a be-all, end-all god out there... But I cannot prove god DOESN'T exist... So I feel the need to identify as Agnostic. You cannot prove god exists and I cannot prove that god doesn't exist. There in lies the rub!

I have 1, 3, 6, 7, 10 and 12 out here on my property... Plus a lot more! I like watching the red-headed and pileated woodpeckers. I had a pileated pecking a hole in an old tree, building his home last year. I watched him for days from my bedroom window. I have lots of cardinals and finches and was shocked to see a mass of bluebirds in my back yard over several days. Prior to that... I had only seen them singly or in pairs. Earlier this year I counted 10 of them at one time. They all flew in at one time.

It may be wrong, but sometimes I miss the cold war.

I was dating a girl a while back. Seemingly super personality. She was degreed, served her country as an officer for years... Now a civilian working a high level Navy job. On our 3rd date she let it slip about the theories she believes in... Faked moon landing, 911 hoax, contrails, etc. I ended the relationship telling her that she should find someone with the same beliefs as hers were not in sync with mine and the disparity was too wide. Flash forward 3-4 months. I have a buddy I have known since childhood. We grew up together since we were 8 years old. We have stayed in touch, for the most part, for the past (almost) 50 years. We had always held the same views... Last I recall. He asked if I was seeing anyone... I told him about the aforementioned person and how I thought she was a kook. He laughed and said he believed in two of the things I mentioned... No moon landing and a totally different 911 conspiracy than the one she believed in. I was shocked! So here is someone else that I need to let go out of my life. I just don't want anyone around me that is that far off base and whose opinions and beliefs I cannot trust. Not to say everyone should believe what I believe... But this shit is a different story altogether!

Regardless of her beliefs (or yours pressed into her) she needs to have exposure to it. Are you afraid she may come home believing in god? My folks both said... "Fine! You don't have to go anymore!" WTF? It was THAT easy? They explained they wanted me to be exposed to everything and then let me make the decisions... With regard to my beliefs. I remember struggling with what to believe in my mid-teens. Most everyone I knew believed in god. The older I got, the more I doubted the existence. When I started reading about ancient Roman history... I then realized how christianity started. You shouldn't tell your daughter what to think and you shouldn't be uncomfortable. It is best that she know the differences now so she can more easily deal with her own future possible uncomfortable situations when they arise.
