A variant of Pascal's Wager is the horse race analogy. Assume that every religion, every sect, and every denomination is represented by a horse in a horse race. In the starting block they are pretty much even. The question of course remains, which horse is going to ultimately win the race, which is unknowable. Therefore, pick your horse, go all in, and hope for the best.

@GrungeGirl90s This is going to take a little time to go through, it's a weighty article. I see it was written in the first quarter of 2018, therefore it doesn't account for the shooting incidents for the last 3 quarters of 2018, and the first half of 2019. I think that in itself is significant, as I think the data from this last 15 months may change the entire calculus. I'll look at more thoroughly later today and get back to you. Thanks.

@powder Not sure why calling these white supremacist terrorists is difficult to accept. In the 1960's the Weatherman Underground were called terrorist. In the late 60' the SLA (Siambanese Liberation Army) of patty Hearst fame were called terrorists. The Bader Meinhoff of Germany were called terrosists. The Red Army were called terrorists. Granted each were more cohesive as an identifiable group, but they were organized around a fringe ideology. White supremicists, just like European Islamic lone wolves, all act upon a common ideology just like our white supremacists. And the Islamic lone wolves are called terrorists.

The president sets the tone for the nation and motivates the direction the nation travels. Trump's rhetoric fuels this racial element to act out. We also dont know the death toll attributable to the rollback and attack on health services to minority populations and the elderly. We will not realize the effects and outcomes until after the fact. Regarding wars, we are supporting the Saudis immoral war in Yemen. We are providing the weaponry that is creating the worst human rights crisis in the world. He is creating a situation in the area Iran area where the opportunity for an incident sparking a war is more likely than not. He has aided Kim Jung-ung in furthering their nuclear program by his naivete regarding foreign policy. With regards to directly killing anybody that has opposed him. His rhetoric regarding the "Squad" is stoking his rabid, irrational, poorly-educated followers to do the killing for him. One attempt against one of the squad was already foiled in NYC since Trump's rhetoric began. His racial white supremacist speech has escalated hate crimes and domestic terrorism by white nationalists by upwards of 200%. Many of these crimes, including murders, are directly influenced by his rhetoric. Trump is not working for America. He is destroying our representative democracy and bring us down to a perhaps the lowest level since the Civil War. He works only for his own fortune, and cares nothing about the USA.

I can cherry pick too. Totalitarianism is a form of government in which all societal resources are monopolized by the state in an effort to penetrate and control all aspects of public and private life (Evangelical Christian direction of policy), through the state’s use of propaganda (FOX News and the charge of "fake news"), terror ("Send her back), and technology (reliance on the oil, gas, & coal industries to direct policy and denial of the climate change issue despite iverwhelmongvevidence supporting). Totalitarian ideologies reject the existing society as corrupt (rigged system, unregistered illegals voting in lastvelection) , immoral (appointmentbof far right wing judges to the Supreme Court, exhibiting serious moral character flaws) and beyond reform (again rigged system and " fake news,") project an alternative society in which these wrongs are to be redressed, and provide plans and programs for realizing the alternative order. These ideologies, supported by propaganda campaigns, demand total conformity on the part of the people. Totalitarian forms of organization enforce this demand for conformity. Totalitarian societies are hierarchies dominated by one political party and usually by a single leader. The party penetrates the entire country through regional, provincial, local and “primary” (party-cell) organization. Youth, professional, cultural, and sports groups supplement the party’s political control. A paramilitary secret police ensures compliance. Information and ideas are effectively organized through the control of television, radio, the press, and education at all levels. https://remember.org/guide/facts-root-nazi? @dare2dream To add more clzrity to the dizcussio. this is Pascal's Wager: One can't possibly know if God exists, therefore; 1) If you believe in God, and he exists, you are saved and destined for heaven:); 2) If you don't believe and God truly exists, you are condemned to hell; 3) If don't believe and he doesn't exist, no harm, no foul; 4) if you believe and he doesn't exist, then all you've wasted is your time; So the crux of Pascal's Wager is that you might as well believe, that way you are covered no matter what and the most you've donr is waste a little time and energy. A mediocre way out. Also associated with Pascal's Wager is: Christianity is like a horse race. Out of the gate they all appear equally capable of making to the finish line first (aka. Apocrypha). Therefore, since all the owners (denominations) are sure their horse is the one that will come in first, and no real way to really know, hell just pick one and hope for the best (the Wager).

Listening to how the Democrats were failing to anticipate or address Trump's strategy (witnessed in last nights rally in NC), and how they do not seem to have an answer to counter his dirty politics, needless to say discouraged me. Democrats keep bringing a knife to a gunfight. They let Trump frame the dialogue and define the rules of the game. Yesterday was just another example of snatching defeat out of the mouth of victory.

@Happy_Killbot In 1940, Breckenridge Long, Special assistant to the Secretary of State to FDR, set about demonizing Jewish refugees fleeing the NAZI scourge in Europe. The very people he was tasked with saving. He was responsoble for issuing visas and asylum status to Jews seeking refuge. He was virulently anti-semitic. The relevancevis that he used many of the same arguments that are presently being employed by the Trump Administration with regard to our southern border crisis. He issued directives to his European consultants (see below) to provide as many impediments as possible to applicants of Jewish descent as possible to discourage or halt asylum seekers. While it is true we are not presently engaged in a direct war with Mexico or Central America, and they are not facing a direct genocide like in Nazi Germany of WWII, the rhetoric is too similar. The refugees are under assault, it just doesn't have a monilithic organized front like the Nazi organization. An assault nonetheless. Long's actions and the steps he took, the rhetoric employed and his associates engaged in were no less insidious and ultimately resulted in at least 190,000 unnecessary deaths. What is happening today relating to the southern refugees has many similarities to 1940 in substance. There too, nativistic conservative rationalizations were employed all over Europe and in the US for denying refugees asylum within their borders. The fact that you desire a one to one comparison between the Nazi holicaust and our present crisis is shortsighted and smacks of willful ignorance and denial. You did not read the references I supplied. Broaden your horizons and quit relying on oversimplistics explation for what are obviously complex HUMAITARIAN crises. Breckenridge Long background: Long came to believe that he was under constant attack from what he termed radicals and the Jewish press for his stance on strict immigration controls mandated by the immigration laws in force at the time. In an intra-department memo he circulated in June 1940 Long wrote: "We can delay and effectively stop for a temporary period of indefinite length the number of immigrants into the United States. We could do this by simply advising our consuls to put every obstacle in the way and to require additional evidence and to resort to various administrative devices which would postpone and postpone and postpone the granting of the visas."[3][4] Ultimately, the effect of the immigration policies set by Long's department was that, during American involvement in the war, ninety percent of the quota places available to immigrants from countries under German and Italian control were never filled. If they had been, an additional 190,000 people could have escaped the atrocities being committed by the ...

@Happy_Killbot I disagree with all your assertions and assumptions. You not seeing doesn't mean it isn't happenng to them. Generally people in that position are reluctant to discuss it. The comparisons are apt on many levels. If you want an exact point by point comparison of circumstances you won't ever find it. Times are different, context is different, but so many of the underlyung symptoms are identical or close enough for concern. The major enemy in 1933 to 1939 was denial by the average citizen on Germany. Denial is the enemy of rationality. I cannot engage you thouroughly at present. But will get back to when time allows.

t1nick replies on Jul 18, 2019:
@Happy_Killbot @bot you are oversimplifying the issues in your three points. 1) Our "rule of law", guarantees them certain rights while they are in the country, or are applying for asylum. 2) It is true that "they are breaking the law", but we created the circumstances in Latin America which is driving the present immigration wave: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/2338489002 https://medium.com/s/story/timeline-us-intervention-central-america-a9bea9ebc148 Originally, illrgal entrance was prosecuted as a civil offense. Since Trump it has been upgraded to a criminal offense. This philosophical and legal shift has helped create a larger backlog in the courts as the prosecution of criminal defense is more complicated than a civil charge. Couple this with a failure of the Trump Administration in funneling monies to a symbolic wall that has little effect in solving the problem as opposed to using the monies to hire more judges to alleviate the backlogs. The entire problem is so much more complicated than the oversimplified assessment you suggested. 3) Once again you oversimplify. To say they are not persecuted is a misnomer. They are typically underpaid by employers knowing they have no way to seek recompense, they work jobs average Americans see beneath them, and are disrespected daily by same daily. for being in these jobs. The MAJORITY pay taxes, are law abiding, and are model citizens, yet they are slighted and mischaracterized daily by conservatives and the Administration. There are long standing and deep cultural ties binding these people to the US (specifically the US Southwest). It is incencitive to disregard these connections and their import. I know its easier to generalize and seek simple answers to complex problems. But it is short sighted, disingenuous, and patently dishonest. It the continual oversimplification of the issues that makes this issue so devisive and ugly.
The News media bears a great responsibility in getting Donald Trump elected in 2016.

@SeaGreenEyez You pose strong arguments. I'm not sure Bernie, Elizabeth or Biden for that matter are the answer. Bernie and Biden are tone deaf to many undercurrents that are evolving in society. They are white males of my generation and that is not playing well in many circles. They think like white males and that has shown to be a problem. Eluzabeth is forging new ground and backing it up with good policy ideas. She is the better bet of the three. I'm not sure of her ability to handle the nasty politics of Trump and his supporters. Not that she is not capable, its that she has integrity and that won't win the day in the underhanded, and ugly politics that Trump will bring. The "Squads" time may have not come yet. They may be ahead of the curve, but are indicative of a growing undercurrent. Right now, the best we can hope for is that Trump continues to wear the greater voting public down with his vitriol, sophomorics stunts and hate that he undermines himself. That is barring a candidate arising with a coherent plan, sufficient charisma, and intestinal fortitude to go toe to toe with Trump.

@SeaGreenEyez You may be right on the long run. However, anytime an old paradigm is challenged, the old guard or those that are comfortable with the known rise up and find fault. You may be right that this may not be the right time to initiate an assault on the existing order. The price is high, which is giving Trump a victory in 2020. But I am not opposed to the "Sqad". They are bringung up issies that have been around under the surface for a long time. 1) The 64' Voters Rights got rid of overt Jim Crow, but failed to rid us of institutional racism. 2) Roe brought to light the need for women to control their own bodies and that they have the right to be taken seriously as a women, and especially as a women of color. 3) That the present policies in Isreal are apartheid and being supported and financially funded by our own politicians, with an Evandelical push to hasten a hypothical second coming. and 4) ACA brought us closer to recognizing that health care should be a right and not just privilige of those with money. Their message is difficult and ultimately painful for some in this country to stomach. These are issues that will come to the forefront eventually. Is this the right time given the stakes. Perhaps not if our goal is rid ourselves of Trump in 2020? But I am glad that someone has brought these issues to thevlight of day.
