@TheGreatShadow and @Freedompath, President Clinton and former Presidents Ford, Carter, Reagan, and GHW Bush, along with their wives, all attended Nixon's funeral. I'm not sure what protocol would be if Trump were to actually be removed from office by a vote in the Senate.

@KKGator, please define "far-left candidate". If you think Bernie Sanders is a far left candidate compare him to Dwight Eisenhower on the issues. Bernie is slightly to the right of Eisenhower. And in an issue by issue poll, anywhere from 65% to 85% of American voters agree with Sanders on the issues.

Don't forget the 20 for treason.
mcgeo52 replies on Oct 21, 2019:
@glennlab, we do not have to be at war for someone to commit treason. Look at the legal definition of treason found in 18 USC 2381: "Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States." Notice the word "or" in the first line. The clause preceding it, "levies war against them," is only one of the two actions that qualify as treason. The other is found after the "or." It is, "adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere." I would argue that any foreign power attempting to interfere in our elections is an enemy, and anyone aiding them is a traitor. That's not a stretch. It's the black letter of the law. If it makes you feel any better, I would accept prison time for Trump instead of the death penalty, as long as it was hard time and not Club Fed.

Politically it would make far more sense to include a younger VP, preferably from the south or west, and preferably a person of color. For instance, Warren and Julian Castro would put Texas into play. If Trump loses Texas he has almost no chance of winning the Electoral College. Remember what happens when Democrats ignore the Electoral college?

@silverotter11, the ones who are up for re-election in tight races don't dare support Trump if the House has produced the evidence against him. And it may not even get to the Senate. Nixon resigned before the House voted. At least two significant newspapers have already called for Trump to resign. One is in St. Louis and the other in Connecticut. Interestingly, the one in Connecticut is a Hearst paper. Then there is Fox News. I am hearing that inside Fox it is currently a "Category 3 shitstorn" with a fight between news and commentators over whether or not to dump Trump. Paul Ryan recently joined the board at Fox and he is firmly in the dumpTrump camp. If Trump loses Fox there is no way he survives a Senate vote. At that point he will probably resign.

@BitFlipper and @silverotter11, it is the job of the House to impeach (i.e., charge with crimes) and of the Senate to hear the case and decide the verdict. The Rules of the Senate require that the trial begin the afternoon of the day following delivery of the Articles of Impeachment by the House. The rules also provide that the trial is presided over by the Chief Justice, not the Majority Leader. McConnell will have no control over the length of the trial or what is heard. On the other hand, Pelosi does have a great deal of say in which articles are included, and each article has to be heard and voted on. BTW, it looks like McCornhole doesn't have anywhere near enough votes to change the rules.

Your statement, " We don't need a strong middle class, we need an expanded upper class," demonstrates a fundamental ignorance of economic reality and math. By definition the upper class is limited a certain top percentile of the population. The number can vary depending on who you talk to, but if it's over 20% tops you are starting to talk about the middle class. The middle class is the engine that drives the economy. The lower class cannot afford to spend enough to do the job. The rich do not spend enough to do the job for two reasons: 1) By definition there are are not enough of them. 2) They spend a far smaller percentage of their income/wealth than the middle class does. In case you still don't get it, let me try to explain. Take 100 people at random and rank them by the amount of money they have. If your sample was truly random a graph of the results would result in a bell curve. Let's call the bottom 20 the lower class, the next 60% the middle class, and the top 20% the upper class. The lower class will spend the absolute minimum because it is all they can afford. Say on average they each spend $5 per day. They contribute $100 per day to the economy. The upper class can afford to spend much more, and does so. Let's say that on average they spend $500 per day. While the have the money to spend more, they still only eat three meals a day. Plus we are talking about an average amount; someone at the 81st percentile is not buying a new jet or a new yacht every year. They contribute $10, 000 per day to the economy. The middle class probably only spends an average of $250 per day. That works out to $30,000 per day that they add to the economy. Total this up and you get: $100 - lower class $45,000 - middle class $10,000 - upper class $55,100 - total That is a fairly functional economy. If you gut the middle class, you end up with far less of that $30,000 per day. Functionally over the last four decades, thanks to Reaganomics, we have distorted the curve. While we have moved (maybe, and this is being very generous) 25% of the middle class (i.e., 15 people) up to where they are spending $500 per day, we have moved 50% (i.e., 30 people) down to where they are spending only $100 per day. Let's look at the total now: $100 - lower class $3,000 - 50% of middle class that has moved down (30x$100) $3,750 - 25% of the middle class that has not moved (15x$250) $7,500 - 25% of the middle class that has moved up (15x$500) $10,000 - upper class $24,350 - total I know that you may argue that the upper class will invest their wealth in business that create jobs. But that argument is patently stupid. The rich invest in order to make ...

@Happy_Killbot, if you are trying to make a capitalist system work in a consumer economy, the ideal distribution works to put sufficient money into the hands of the consumers. If you want a strong economy you need to have a strong middle class. That was what we had prior to Reaganomics. Destroying the middle class has put more money in the hands of the extremely wealthy at the risk of the economy. It's time for the rest of us to fight back against the monied interest.

mcgeo52 replies on Sep 24, 2019:
@IamNobody, nothing goes faster than the speed of light. The speed of light squared is the acceleration to be factored into the classic physics formula, F=MA where Force = Mass times Acceleration. Obviously c squared, which is not c by a factor of two (i.e., c times 2), but rater c times c, is a humongous number. When you multiply it by something as small as the mass of an atom (the m in Einstein's equation, factored in as the M in F+MA), you still have a huge af number for the e (which is the Force in F=MA). In other words, splitting an atom and breaking the atomic bond releases an almost incomprehensible amount of energy.

I don't buy it. The Democrats have run a centrist candidate in every election since McGovern lost in '72. McGovern lost to an incumbent with a strong economy. It was a given he would lose. It's not a legit excuse to not run a progressive candidate. Since McGovern, we have had 11 Presidential elections. Which ones have the Democrats won? • 1976 against Ford. They could have run their most radical progressive against the disgraced Republicans and probably won. • 1992 against GHW Bush and a tanked economy. Again, they could have run their most radical progressive and probably have won. • 1996 they won with an incumbent and a strong economy. • 2008 they won against the party that had tanked the economy. The fact that they did it with a black junior Senator says they could have probably run their most radical progressive and won. • 2012 they won with an incumbent and a strong economy. The Democrats have managed to elect Carter, Clinton and Obama in elections they would have had to try hard to lose. The Republicans did not run to the center with any of their candidates. What has that cost them? As I said, with all due respect to your father, I don't buy it. BTW, all of the post election polls showed that Bernie would have beaten Trump.
