@JohnnyQB I take your point but I live in the UK and have only visited a few European countries on holiday so I cannot really comment on them. I have spent a bit more time in the USA and by far the majority of members here are from the USA so it is a pertinent comment. Many people think that the UK and the USA are very similar but that is far from the case. I keep meaning to get a copy of John Sopels boook "If Only They Didn't Speak English" which dicusses the many differences.
True but it was a different time

Great photos but Mount Index ? what an awful name for a beautiful mountain. Isn't there a native American name to call it ?
Moravian replies on Feb 22, 2020:
@LiterateHiker Thanks. Many of the mountains in Scotland have unpronounceable Gaelic names but I much prefer that to some name given by a Victorian English surveyor. There is a peak called Bod an Damhain in the Cairngorms. It is shown on the maps as "the devils point" but the literal translation is "the devils penis". The story is that Queen Victoria asked what the English translation was and a local was too embarrassed to say "penis" so he called it the devils point and the name stuck. I take great delight in correcting any tourist who asks about it.

@Marionville Regarding her factual inaccuracies . She said that England was already overcrowded with 68 million people. They do not recognise Scotland,Wales and NI as being seperate parts of the union. They are just places where the people have funny accents.

It's difficult to say what their women look like as they are swathed in leather on the back of the bike. There tend to be very few female riders. I think it's the noise of the things that get me most. Last year I went for a hike in the hills near Aviemore and I could still hear them down in the glens. I have never owned a Harley style bike and although I have had several Hondas I think their Gold Wing is even worse than a Harley. I see them touring towing a little trailer with the stereo blasting and think ,why not just get a car. It would probably be cheaper.

Petter comments on Feb 12, 2020:
Common sense. Deeply ("*fanatically*") religious states discourage education of the masses in general and of women in particular. A poorly educated society is not innovative, and therefore is less affluent, unless factors such as mineral wealth compensate.
Moravian replies on Feb 12, 2020:
Scotland is a good example of a causual relationship. After the reformation an act of parliament was passed ensuring that every parish had a "grammar school". These were overseen by the church of Scotland who were keen to have a literate population who could read the scriptures unlike the Roman Catholic church which retained Latin, a language only the priests could understand. Enlightenment giants such as David Hume and Adam Smith resulted although to be fair Scotland had an much better higher education system than England having four universities when England only had two.

Moravian replies on Feb 4, 2020:
@Marionville I think it is mostly down to definition. At one end Jihad can mean just trying to be as good a person as possible and at the other to take up armed struggle against unbelievers. The days of using biblical teachings to persecute others is mostly past apart from extremist preachers mostly in the USA and of course by the Israelis and their zionist and fundamentalist Christian buddies in the USA against the Palestinians. The Reformation and the European enlightenment changed life for the better in Christian countries but as the Quoran is considered to be the perfect and unadulterated word of god it is going to be difficult to have an Islamic enlightenment' When the likes of Ayan Hirsi Ali suggests it she has a fatwa placed on her.

@JackPedigo A great story. Sometimes looking at your ancestry may be a disappointment; The Applecross inn is famous for it's food and always busy. The Bealach na ba is now of what is called the "The north west 500" A circular route starting and finishing at Inverness and taking in the north west and north coast roads, Much of it still on narrow and single track roads, It has increased tourism but unfortunately attracts petrol heads in high powered cars trying to beat the recoed for the route. I attended a wedding at Applecross a few years ago camping at the site there overnight. My battered Subaru was surrounded by Porsche sports cars. The drivers "doing the 500". An incongruous sight in the remote highlands.

I can understand that women in particular may be financially dependant on the other partner but surely a man could walk away. I read a fascinating biography recently called "The Nipper" by a guy who was physically abused by his drunken father until the kid was strong enough to stand up to him. The mother eventually had enough and left then the father had a girlfriend who had her own flat nearby and still turned up regualrly to be beaten by the drunk. As they say in the north of England." @Aristippus Thanks for the link, I will check it out. Another writer who touches on this subject is Daniel Quinn. Moravian replies on Dec 30, 2019:
@girlwithsmiles Yes, I think there is truth in that. Hindu,Muslim and Sikh's coexisted peaceably but after parttition former friends found themselves on opposite sides in the battles between Pakistan and India. They still have occaisional skirmishes over Kashmir which has a predominantly Muslim population but India wants to rule the area. Both of those unstable countries have nuclear weapons which is a worry and ultra nationalists like Modi is making the situation worse.

Moravian replies on Dec 28, 2019:
@AnneWimsey By specific group do you mean all of Islam ?. The religion probably has as many divergent groups as Christianity. For example Glasgow shopkeeper Asad Shah of the Ahmadi sect was murdered by an extremeist Sunni muslim for wishing his customers a happy easter. There are other sects which are probably free of mysoginism but I would think that women are suppressed in all Islamic countries just as there still are to an extent in the Christian West.

Moravian replies on Dec 28, 2019:
@girlwithsmiles I don't think so although there were some atrocities such as the Armristar massacre when General Dyer ordered his troops to fire on a peaceable demonstration which killed hundreds. Partition was badly handled with the border between India and the new Pakistan being drawn on a map by an English civil servant and the British probably played the opposing religious groups against one another for their own ends.
