Moravian replies on Jun 11, 2019:
@TomMcGiverin We seem to be reverting to the way it was before worker power and the unions drastically improved workers conditions. Every time I hear that increasing the minimum wage is a bad thing I just shake my head in disbelief. Boris Johnson, the front runner for PM in the UK has said if elected he will raise the threshold for the higher tax rate from £50k to £80k and it will be partly funded from national insurance contributions. So lower paid workers are going to fund a tax break for the wealthier ffs.

@TheMiddleWay Oh Dear she is a mere Journalist. She has a degree in classics from Cambridge and taught classics for a time before becoming a journalists. Possibly one reason why her book is the best referenced of the type I have read. I haven't read either of the authors you mention but if you haven't read Catherine Nixey's work how can you compare them ? One small point I was unaware off before reading her book. I always thought that the fact that the beautiful marble statues from ancient Greece had bits missing. Noses, arms feet etc, was just wear and tear from years of handling. No it was deliberate damage by the early Christians who considered them Idolatrous. Also I don't think Hypatia, the philosopher, astromoner and mathemetician would agree with you, well she couldn't as she was stripped naked, hauled through the streets and killed by a Christian mob. Fast forward to just over 300 years ago to Edinburgh when Archie Aikenhead was hanged for blasphemy. Yes charmers those early Christians Of course there was some limited advancement through the Christian era, I remember learning about Mendels peas in science class at school but as the RC church deliberatly kept the masses ignorant to better supress them the priests had a monopoly on education. I did try to read a book by one author Matias mentions, Pascale Boyer, but virtually lost the will to live after a few chapters. A load of impenatrable gobbldegook, No references, just opinions. .

Moravian replies on Jun 5, 2019:
@TheMiddleWay You said it " the education establishments were to better understand gods work" not scientific advancement' Of course the churches, Roman Catholic and Eastern orthodox played a large part in history. They were all powerful and had no opposition until Henry started the church of England which was just a watered down RC church anyway. It was only after the reformation and the enlightenment that scientific advancement really began. "The enlightenment" ?. get it. the end of the dark ages. After the reformation the Church of Scotland opened "Grammar schools" throughout Scotland to further the populations understanding of the scriptures. OF course this had the effect of educating ordinary folk and Scotland was at the forefront of advancement for generations. At one time Sctland had four universities when England only had two, Christians have been holding back advancement from the very early days of Christianity. I recommend you read " The darkening age-- the Christian destruction of the classical world" by academic Catherine Nixey. A fascinating read and definitely not mythology.

I am well aware that there are other religions than Christianity. Did I say otherwise ?and if you read the first five books of the old testament, or Torah or Pentateuch you will be aware that they are Jewish , not Christian. The god they adopted was certainly munificent but only if you were Jewish' Of course religion has been beneficial to mankind but that is probably far outweighed by the harm done. Christianity had it's inquisitions and crusades and it held Europe back for hundreds of years in the dark ages. Islam conquered much of North Africa and Europe (was that a good thing?) and now produces some nasty terrorists. I had some hope for Buddhism, if it is really a religion, but the treatment of the Rohingya people in Myanmar has been particularly brutal. Matias seems to have an agenda promoting religion. I wonder if he is on the right site ? .

Moravian comments on Jun 2, 2019:
"Each of these modules can also be found in non-religious contexts," Do they ?. Certainly not in my life apart from music and dance.
Moravian replies on Jun 3, 2019:
@Wurlitzer I'm not sure waht point the poster was trying to make. That certain behaviours are transferable between a secular and religious lifestyle ? I agree with you up to a point but 1. Dharma and Karma come from buddhism which in some quarters not even qualify as a religion because in most disciplines there is no diety to worship 2.Those are stories not myths although some may merge at times. 3.We may be creatures of habit. ie I have two mugs of coffee each morning but it is not a ritual. there is a big difference 4.There s no such thing as magic. As you say it is illusion. 5. Taboos are a cultural phenomena 6.They probably occur in religion. the cross, star of David etc and in secular life, a fan's football strip etc. 7.There is some great religious music. Handel's Messiah is the usual one listed but I often sing carols at Christmas but I don't take any notice of the lyrics just as I don't take a lot of notice of the lyrics of some of my favourite rock songs. 8.Certainly this occurs and in some animist or pagan religions psychedelic plants are used as a sacrament 9,Purely a religious concept I think 10.Yes like most people I have moral rules much more so than someone who follows the instructions of the old testament 11.The sacrifices in religion, from Incas sacrificing babies (if they did) to RC's not eating meat on a Friday are quite different from a mother giving up food so that her children are fed. surely it is the meaning behind the sacrifice that is important and they are totally different 12.A cultural thing but they do cross over for example saying "Jesus Christ" when something goes wrong could be a good example of both. There are certainly similarities in secular and religious life but without the core worshiping or at least the belief in a diety it is a bit meaningless. .

@LiterateHiker an interesting article and I think I recognise most of the examples but I think you are a bit wide of the mark in calling me sexist.I made no reference to your gender and would have made the same comment to a man. You made wild accusations about my character when you know absolutely nothing about me so I obviously touched a nerve. As a keen hiker myself I enjoyed reading about your hiking exploits and seeing the photos of the beautiful country around you and I have great sympathy with your current injury problem as I have just been diagnosed with arthritis in my ankle which is curtailing my hiking adventures. BUT I am not interested in the fact that one of your lovers is so fat that he can only shag you on his side and another is so brilliant that you have to shout the fact from the rooftops. OK you may say don't read it but it's a bit like car crash TV. A sort of morbid fascination takes over and I keep reading. Anyway that's all I have to say on the matter and I will be more selective in which posts I read in future.
EU elections it looks there is a clear splt between leavers and remainers in the voting.
MattHardy comments on May 28, 2019:
Interesting that if you take Farage's personality and Bank's support away from UKIP and put them both behind an alternative brand with literally no policies or manifesto other than "Brexit" then all the electorate goes with them.
Moravian replies on May 29, 2019:
Ukip were lurching to the right even before Farage left and took most of the Brexiteers with him. They now have unsavoury characters like Carl Benjamin and Tommy Robinson in their ranks so it's good to see them sidelined. As usual the news media is giving a false picture giving the impression that this has been a great victory for the leavers. The Brexit party only gained three more seats than the old UKIP and the combined Lib Dem,Greens, and SNP totalled more votes than the leavers so it looks promising for a new referendum.

That;s what I was trying to imply. Take weather for instance. @powder Certainly different. "The Yanks are getting tired of war"?. i'm not so sure. Certainly they tired of war in Vietnam because of the casualties and the realisation in some quarters that it was totally unjust. Afghanistan and Iraq ?. casualties were much lower and modern warfare is more of a long range thing with most of the casualties being civilians . Collateral damage of little importance. The military industrial machine is very important to the US economy and the mindset that they are the world's policemen still holds good. I can't see a war against Iran happening and in the unlikely event that it did it is unlikely the US would put "boots on the ground" My original comment was about how a foreign war means a rise in patriotism at home and if it is successful it means an increase in the popularity of the govt in charge.

Moravian replies on May 25, 2019:
@Petter thanks for that. I realise that the EU is far from perfect and maybe I have been concentrating on the benefits and ignoring the downside. the problem is that it is difficult to get reasoned comment as it is mostly all for or all against. Re the farm subsidies I grew up in a farming community long before the EU and then farming was even more heavily subsidised than it is now. Farmers on tiny farms which have long since been amalgamated were amongst the wealthiest in the community. Farmers are still heavily subsidised but unfairly as so called "slipper farmers" are coining it in so that certainly needs looking at.

Our fishermen are getting excited thinking they are going to have a free for all again. The common fisheries policy has protected the fish stocks well. I remember the days of the Klondykers when they fished out the herring and then the mackerel. Don't want to go back there again. As for the sugar, maybe cane sugar has a few trace elements missing from sugar beet but to me processed sugar is "pure white and deadly" so I avoid it as much as I can

No i haven't. Don't you remember the butter mountains. Overproduction was costing the tax payer even more. Refined sugar is the same no matter where it comes from so why import sugar cane when sugar beet can be grown at home. Sure people consume sugar but the govt. are making valiant attempts to cut consumption by axing sugary drinks etc.
