I've taken fifteen-week classes in forensic anthropology, the human skeleton, and human musculo-skeletal systems. I can determine the race, gender, approximate age, and height of human skeletal remains. I told a prof once that I 'would never look at people the same way again!'. He laughed, and said "Of course not! You will look THROUGH them instead!". In addition, I once spent most of a summer excavating, and sorting bones from a bison kill site in northern Colorado. At one point, when observing pedestrians on the street, I could "see" through their flesh, and body fat, and "see" their skeletons walking down the street! Which led me to conclude we are all just walking, jabbering bags of bones!

Religion is a leash for untamed humans. Well just my thought.
davknight comments on Feb 20, 2019:
I think what you mean is, religion can play a 'functionalist' role in society, by erecting moral boundaries, e.g., "Thou shalt not do mean stuff". Sociologists refer to that as 'functionalism', which is where a feature of a given culture provides a useful role. But many things, other than religion, can perform a useful purpose. For example, once upon a time in America, every small town had a brothel, or two. And when a farm boy turned 13, his pappy took him to a 'sportin parlor', to learn about the birds n bees. This prepared him for his wedding night, years later. Unfortunately, a town cannot remain half-Methodist, and half-sinfulness n damnation. And as the towns grew, the brothels got closed down.

Actually, the 'Pledge of Allegiance' was introduced during the Second Red Scare of the late 1940s, through the 1950s I can remember having to recite it as a school kid.I think all countries nowadays have their rituals for exacting 'patriotism'/loyalty to the State. And people in all countries are conditioned from childhood to view the State as a parental figure, e.g. the 'Fatherland', the 'Mother Land',etc. And any external criticism of 'Mommy' tends to bring out a hostile reaction.

Cleaning up after humans. See a harpoon skewer space junk in orbit [cnn.com]
davknight comments on Feb 16, 2019:
Space junk is a big problem. As of 2000, there were an estimated 250,000 pieces of space junk in orbit around the Earth. Most space junk is in the form of nuts, bolts, wrenches, etc. But some of it is in the form of larger pieces of metal. All of it is dangerous to space craft and satellites. Keep in mind everything in orbit travels at 18,000 miles per hour. The bigger problem is how to get rid of it. One design, still on the drawing board, is for an orbiting 'vacuum cleaner', that will 'collect' it. But that's still tears away from being tested.

I fell through the ice when I was a kid. I awoke 3 days later in a hospital. I have absolutely no remembrance of anything that happened in between. No 'tunnel of light'. No 'pearly gates'. No nothing. (Maybe I wasn't "dead" enough?). All I remember is saying "I'm hungry!", and after the doctors got done marveling over my 're-awakening', the nurse brought me a bowl of tomato soup, a tuna sandwich, and a carton of milk. I haven't been out on the ice since. And when I still lived in Michigan, on very cold winter days, I'd get this craving for tomato soup, and a tuna sandwich!

davknight comments on Feb 12, 2019:
'Terrorism' is simply the State's euphemism for poor man's war. And all people are capable of it, if forced into a situation that compels them to react that way. I say 'react', because it is usually a reaction to State terrorism of some kind. The word 'terroriste' comes from the French Revolution, when cells of assassins were out hunting Royalist leaders. As a euphemism for poor man's war, we can credit that to Nazi Germany, which ordered that all mention of European resistance fighters describe them as "terrorists".Bureaucrats that failed to do that were summarily arrested, and imprisoned, or worse. This is the origin of the saying that" One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter".
