There used to be a comedy programme on BBC radio 60 years ago called "the Navy Lark".
One much repeated joke was phoning Naval Intelligence to have a chap there answer the phone in a dullard's voice "Hello, this is intelligence speaking!" We cracked up with laughter every time. Have a listen to good clean fun at [bbc.co.uk]
English humour taking the piss out of English behaviours.

"Left hand down a bit...Right hand up a bit."
We used to listen to this but it was also a product of religious lawmaking. If you remember there was no TV till early Sunday evening (Starting with religious programs) so everyone listened to the radio. Some were great like this and "Round the horn" but others less so.
Do you recall "Sing something simple?" I hated having to listen to that. It was only many years later that I found out the Mike Sams singers did the backing vocals for "I am the walrus"

Great memories Kelvin. Growing up, we didn't have tv until about '68 - it would distract from doing homework.

I remember listening to it a long, long time ago! That and Round the Horn, and of course the incomparable The Goon Show.

It started in 1959 and ran until 1977.

@FrayedBear We didn’t get TV at home until the early 1960s and listened to a lot of radio.

@Marionville it was only on the radio.

@FrayedBear I know that, but we still listened to a lot of radio programmes even after we got TV.
