We did a session looking at online presence for our students (future health care professionals). Two girls found pics of themselves posted with other names and details. He was a cold, but an utterly superficially charming man, very good looking. In the secure forensic hospital where he was detained he had sold pictures of his own naked children to the paedophiles then took great pleasure in physically assaulting them. In the end he had lots of nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists falling for his 'poor hard done to' story. I saw right through him, he threatened to have me removed from his direct care and lo and behold...I was. Very manipulative. Ultimately, I was able to move on. Unfortunately, probably due to inadequate supervision this one man destroyed lot of careers. What was also interesting was he'd had a very comfortable, wealthy loving childhood...very strange

@linxminx The night he was born, I was told he wouldn't make it through the night. He and I had a terrible time during his birth and we went through a very traumatic emergency C-section. 6 hours later, I was told I had to leave the hospital. Well he survived, we came back to UK (From AZ). And he grew stronger. At first he struggled with school and we were advised he should go to a 'special school' we ignored them. (This was the child who translated Japanese at 9 years old!) He carried on. At 10 he was diagnosed with Asbergers. We asked him if he wanted us to get extra help, he said no so we carried on. At 11 he corrected his teacher and she admitted he was right! In secondary school they said contrary to needing special education, he is exceptionally bright. He went onto university and this year he graduated with a 2:1 in politics. He is funny, tall, handsome, kind and thoughtful. He has a way of seeing through all the political BS and get right to the point. He writes like a dream and he's going to ok. Amisja replies on Oct 26, 2018:
@rcandlish Ok stop that. You sound like Tommy Robinson! I gave you historical facts, not emotive vitriole. Mohammed was a man of 1200 years ago. Wives were bought and sold as commodities. It is DEFINITELY not acceptable by 21st century standards. Neither was hanging, drawing and quartering people or burning people at stakes for worshiping god with the wrong hat on. Marriage was virtually never about love and more about creating powerful families. Mohammed's first wife was very unusual, as a very independent business woman who basically bankrolled his education. Again unusually, all texts state this was a love match and they were married for 25 years. Alisha was the daughter oh one of Mohammed's brethren and her age is matter of contraversy. From her own writing: The Prophet used to lean on my lap and recite Qur'an while I was in menses." and "Narrated 'Aisha: The Prophet used to embrace me during my menses. He also used to put his head out of the mosque while he was in Itikaf, and I would wash it during my menses." This would suggest she was older than 6. It was not illegal then and common amongst powerful families at that time. I am glad we live in this age were children are protected a great deal more, although there still countries on earth were minimum age do not exist.

@IamNobody when I lived in USA, I liked some bits, like very cheap petrol (gas), driving because the roads are all straight. School buses are an excellent idea....hmmm I am trying hard honestly. That was then. The second but last time I was over there were literally new builds in AZ so cheap I could have bought it with one wage. Now they are back to real prices. I think its hard to come from living in a social democracy to essentially a meritocracy, especially when I had so many barriers to achievement.

@PalacinkyPDX Something else you need to remember is that most English people aren't really into flag waving. You may see a few in NI or the saltire in Scotland. @PalacinkyPDX I absolutely have no experience of having to leave a country due to the forced starvation by destructive dictators. I have absolutely no experience of what it is like to be stolen from my home. I have the experience of being a working class girl from a country whose powers that be, were guilty of such atrocities. I understand people wishing to retain something of their heritage (like the muslim brothers and sisters near me). What I don't understand is the yearning for one thing and claiming an affiliation to something that by 3rd or 4th generation is utterly and completely alien to them. For example when I lived in USA, most people thought I was Irish because of my hair. Then tried to tell me I would 'hate' them because they 'are Irish', when they discovered, I am English. The thing is, way back, my family were Scandavian, my grandfather was a 'Stephenson', which is a derivative of a scandanvian name. I am tall, big boned, fair and definitely of Viking ancestory. I have never once described myself as Norwegian, or Danish, because I am English. I think after 3 or 4 generations you should stick with the country of yer birth. What was weird for me was people claiming to be 'Irish' or 'Italian' or whatever but waved the stars and stripes with tears in their eyes when the national anthem came on. I do not attribute any right or wrong, its just weird to me.

@johnprytz Ok John, seriously, you seem like a sensible, scientific guy. What do you think, with everything you know, is the most likely explanation? Most scientists believe climate change is real, the odd few don't. Most scientists believe that IQ is not racially bound, the odd few don't (James Watson being one of them!), Most scientists believe in evolution but the odd few don't. I know overall, this doesn't mean much but during my first BSc, we were told that the most straightforward answer is usually correct. As for it being British phenomena...well I can imagine a time before TV when at the end of a hot summer, mischievous rural workers sitting at a pub drinking cider, thinking of alsorts of pranks to play. Don't forget, they made shapes of men out of waste straw to burn at the end of harvest, corn dollies and love knots. This was just another secretive rural tradition. (The burning men, is where the US festival of the same name originated from). This is an old country, we have strange traditions going back millenia. There are entire books written on it. Crop circles, however intricate, are made by men.

@PalacinkyPDX I was born a long time after India gained independance. I was a Brit living overseas for long enough so I understand the yearn of the motherland. However I was born in England. These people are second or third generation Americans, with absolutely no ties to the land of their great grandparents. It wasn't that they yearned for the 'old country' . It was they did not see the irony of claiming patriotism and then describe themself as belonging to another nation entirely. I remember hearing Whoopie Goldberg saying, 'I've been to Africa. I am an American!' Its a very odd thing.
