Did Jesus exist?
Khelgason comments on May 7, 2018:
Well, I've been out voted on this one. I have not read the bible....raise in a liberal faith, not recognizing the trinity. Jesus, as an historical figure, is less important than the *character* of Jesus as depicted in the Gospels. Reading the "red letter" portions of the new testament, we see an intelligent, compassionate, young man that seeks to heal the sick, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and shelter the ...
Amisja replies on May 7, 2018:
I think we agree. A lot of the claims laterly came from Paul. In many ways Jesus and Mohammed (who certainly did exist) were very similair. Both had messages of love and peace, both messages were corrupted after they died. It was Paul who made all the conflicting and contradicting rules, you should be celibate to be a good christian or you should be family people. Which is it Paulus? Equally Mohammed's later followers corrupted his story, especially concerning women and education. I think like Mohammed, Jesus had a wonderful message of love and peace. Probably a bit unrealistic but lovely all the same.

Did Jesus exist?
rsabbatini comments on May 7, 2018:
It seems that he has not existed. The only documentary evidence is a brief mention by a Roman historian, named Josephus. The fact that the many books about Jesus in the New Testament tells Jesus story is not necessarily an evidence (there are many inconsistencies among them).

I don't like the wording of your poll, however having looked at the academic evidence, it is clear to me that there was once a political agitator, charismatic orator and all-round reasonable guy called Jesus. Not a magic baby, son or god or super hippy but he definitely existed.

Amisja replies on May 7, 2018:
@doug6352 Doug, I don't believe what I like, I review evidence, seek out opinion from reputable sources and listen to advice Both my sons were born in USA and I was put under enormous pressure to have them circumscised. I reviewed the medical evidence and given the falling rates of HIV in the west, wide and sensible use of condoms and access to clean water, the need is not there. (The evidence is inconclusive even from countries were the need is greater). This practice is not universal and not necessary...so what are we left with...oh yeah...god. I was not going to mutilate my male children in the same way as I wouldn't mutilate my female child just coz I was told god expected it. I understand this is common in USA but it is just tradition. It is not necessary.

I asked her if she had any food she'd never tried or anything she fancied doing. She said she had never done ecstasy! She decided against it in the end. Oh but when this vicar guy came in to ask if she wanted prayers, she did tell him to f@@k off ...which was the first time I'd heard her swear in my life!

As regards religious turns of phrase, it is actually a disciplinary offence (see spelled correctly ;) ) for a nurse to use any religious terms here. Nurses have been disciplined for saying, 'I'll pray for you'. Its something I would never do in clinical practice or in university (I am a uni lecturer these days). Even something like 'blessya'. I think it is generally a good idea because as practitioners or educators our role is never to proselytise.

Nobody steal my idea ok? So I have this idea of making a virtual world, you use AI to inform its creation. Artificial reproduced circumstances identical to those of the big bang (or our nearest guess). Then sit back and literally watch the fireworks. Maybe speed up the proceding 13.4 billion years. ...

@Davesnothere But still how exciting. We could create a whole entire new computer modelled world with little AI civilisations...or another barren mass. I think its an interesting thought experiment.

There's a referendum coming up in Ireland soon to repeal the 8th amendment which outlawed abortion ...
LovingAZLife comments on Apr 25, 2018:
I fully support a women's right to autonomy of her body. Making abortion illegal anywhere just increases unsafe and unsanitary abortions, leading to more dead women. If I had it my way, all women would have access to safe and shame-free abortion.
Amisja replies on Apr 25, 2018:
