Why do so many thread on here end up talking about sex?
Uncorrugated comments on Feb 22, 2018:
Because I only get to talk about sex these days...... ;-)
What is the most outlandish or improbable theory you've ever heard?
Uncorrugated comments on Feb 23, 2018:

Ever since I was a child and I saw the similarities between the sun and planets and atoms, I have hypothesised that perhaps we are just and atom in the spot on a great space monsters bottom that makes up our universe. But that's it. The wild random speculation of an over-imaginative child - now turned into a theory, allgedly, :-)

Will the discovery of extraterrestrial life change the course of human events?
Uncorrugated comments on Feb 23, 2018:
It depends how and where it is discovered. Is it life, Jim, but not as we know it? Is it intelligent life of just self-replicating chemical compounds? Or did it discover us?

Uncorrugated comments on Feb 23, 2018:
I think the Spanish did themselves a disservice when they trashed the referendum last year. They would have probably won the popular vote against devolution. (Similar to the Scottish vote in the UK) As it was they just came across as bullies and the international communities as spineless cowards who didn't want to rock the boat.
A church I used to attend is talking about a "miracle": Several youth from the church survived, and ...
Uncorrugated comments on Feb 25, 2018:
So a group of young people got lost in the mountains and were rescued by a highly trained mountain rescue team. I assume the young people were not devoid of any training and had the sense to stay put and find/make some sort of shelter. This is a scene played out many times throughout the year in Europe, the majority of which are concluded with limited injury and great success. At what point does something rare or unlikely become a miracle?
Anyone else ethically vegan?
Uncorrugated comments on Feb 25, 2018:
Nope. Mostly vegetarian, but not strict about it. I like to know where my meat and fish comes from, only eat free range eggs. Dislike factory farming though.
What's your biggest regret?
Uncorrugated comments on Feb 27, 2018:
Having no regrets..... ;-)
Believing in God is as dumb as believing in Santa Claus. Religion is a euphemism for mythology
Uncorrugated comments on Feb 27, 2018:
I beg to differ. Many religious people aren't dumb. They misguidedly place their trust in a community that has been around for centuries. I place my trust in science. A level of trust, that as an atheist and skeptic, I shouldn't have. I do not have the expertise or resources to verify the claims made by the scientific community. For the 'softer' sciences such as psychology and social sciences I can tend to succumb to confirmation bias - I will tend towards socialist policies and be very wary of right wing politicians. Christians (+other religions) aren't that different, they are comfortable with their beliefs and see no reason to challenge them. The fear of loss of community and fear of change means they are happy to accept the explanations of apologetics. Calling them dumb isn't helpful and won't endear them to critical thinking or help the atheist agenda at all.
Question: What do you do if your electric car runs out of electric?
Uncorrugated comments on Feb 27, 2018:
How far are they driving on a Saturday? Even early Leafs will do over 80 miles on a charge. If they are off to a concert and planning to do more, then a re-charging stop will need to be factored in. It's no different to thinking about putting any other fuel in, it just takes a little longer and, at the moment, a little more thought. It probably won't be too long before breakdown services start to carry mobile generators to put a boost charge to give sufficient range to get to a charging station.

Is there anyone here who has ever seen a UFO? And, if so, what do you believe you were witnessing?
Uncorrugated comments on Feb 27, 2018:
I have seen a UFO, but couldn't vote as the option isn't there. It was (or appeared to be) flying and I don't know what it was. Thus, I managed to conclude that I has seen an unidentified flying object. Simples. ;-)
Scientific society is starting to believe there is only 50-50 chance of this world to be real.
Uncorrugated comments on Feb 28, 2018:
A simulation of what? What I experience is real to me and follows set rules. So realistically, I don't care if it is a simulation. I'd still like to see where you get your evidence for the statement though.
Why am I single?

Should war only be a last resort?
Uncorrugated comments on Feb 28, 2018:
I am not convinced that war has ever been necessary or really achieved anything. Even WW2 could have been avoided had the west not decided to crush germany completely after WW1 - all that was needed was a charismatic leader to motivate the german people to get back what had been taken from them....

Can I ever be happy again ?
Uncorrugated comments on Feb 28, 2018:
Happiness is a state of mind (with the exception of some mental illness) and as such is a choice. Our emotions are valid, but we can choose how we manage those emotions. Start by asking yourself what makes you happy or sad. If you choose to dwell on the things that make you sad, then you will miss the things that make you happy. Ignore the things you can't change and concentrate on the things you can. Negativity breeds negativity. Think positive. It works. It takes time, but you can train yourself to manage your happiness (and other emotions). Talk to yourself - but only talk to yourself in the positive and look to the future not the past. However, if you are clinically depressed, you need to seek professional help. You will find happiness again.
Is there a lesson to be learned from a "failed relationship?"
Uncorrugated comments on Feb 28, 2018:

Do we need the mind?
Uncorrugated comments on Mar 1, 2018:
Mind is a word that describes the function of the brain. So unless you replace the description of what we call mind with a different label, then no, we won't soon throw it out. Language changes with time, so it may be that in 100 years we commonly use a different label for the brain's function.
What is to you the most effective argument against the existence of God?
Uncorrugated comments on Mar 1, 2018:
Does your god manifest itself in any detectable way in my life? If yes, then why does your god not care that I can't see it?. If no, then a god I cannot detect is no different than one that does not exist.

Genuine question, because I honestly don't have the answer: Can heteronormative men and women be ...
Uncorrugated comments on Mar 2, 2018:
Maybe. Maybe not. It might help if I knew whether or not I am heteronormative. I don't have a definitive answer as there are so many variables. I have lots of female friends - some of whom I have has a sexual relationship with, some I haven't. I think much of it depends on your view of sex. Is is just as a part of a long term relationship to the exclusion of others or can you have a 'no strings' sex with someone you care about if the circumstances were right? In general, men are better at non-comittal sex (some are really, really bad at it too!) than women in my experience, that's both personal experience and being the honourary female in a female dominated workplace. When you care about somebody of the opposite sex there can be intimate moments where the male body gets confused (not much intelligent design about a body that only has enough blood to work either the brain or the penis, but not both at the same time) and men can read the signs wrong. If it feels good and you agree what after before you start - then what's the problem? If there is any chance it will change or spoil the relationship, then don't.
Why do religious people need a god to worship?
Uncorrugated comments on Mar 2, 2018:
I think you might be better asking that to a theist. I can hypothesise, but it would unfair for me to speak on behalf of theists.
Do you still recognize the concept of faith for yourself despite not believing in a higher power?

Uncorrugated comments on Mar 5, 2018:
As a spiritual (whatever that is) event, no, I don't believe in Karma. However, I do believe that how you relate to others and your environment can influence your surrounding and how others relate to you. Nothing supernatural about it, if you are good to others, then there is a greater likelihood that others will respond to you in a positive way. Those that live by the sword....
How old was everyone when they discovered Atheism or Agnosticism before they became one?
Uncorrugated comments on Mar 7, 2018:
The question is back to front for me. I have always been an atheist and have never believed in a god. When I asked questions about this god character they told me about, all I ever got back were answers that didn't make sense. I initially thought I was agnostic as I didn't believe god/s existed, but couldn't prove that they didn't. Until I realised that that is an atheist. So here I am.

Atheist that admire Churches and other religious architecture?
Uncorrugated comments on Mar 10, 2018:
Yes. But has more to do with history and art than any specific religious interest. Religions and history go hand in hand, especially the immensely wealthy religions who built impressive buildings - absoutely state of the art for their time. I find it easy to seperate the two.

We complement each other beautifully - we each value our individuality and independence fiercely, yet we value our time together and our shared experiences equally and we make a great team. We take an interest in each other's interests and support each other in them. It works for us. This one's a keeper!!! :-)

Why does an imperfect entity make more sense than a perfect one - and how do you know the difference? A universe creating pixie makes sense if you endow it with the qualities needed to answer unanswered questions.

The biggest Problem with Atheism: People are Atheist because they hate religion, instead of having a...
Uncorrugated comments on Mar 26, 2018:
That's a pretty sweeping statement you have just made. I'd be interested to know how you came to that conclusion and where you got your evidence from. I have always been an atheist - long before I really knew anything about religion and certanly well before I learned about all the amoral acts performed supposedly in the name of religion. I am an atheist because I see no evidence that the gods described by various religions exist. The burden of proof for this remains with those making the claim - if you claim you have an invisible unicorn in your basement, it's not up to me to prove you haven't. It's your job to prove you have, I'm not the one making the claim. A bit like your statement above - I don't believe you.

A few things to put out there.
Uncorrugated comments on Apr 5, 2018:
We are a diverse bunch, separated by a common language. Dictionaries try to define words by their common usage - the difficulty with this is that 'common usage' is different for the same words in different communities and changes over time too. I tend to clarify what I mean when I use words that I know will be used differently - many English words are used differently in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Sometimes the differences are small and sometimes the same word can mean completely different things in different times (gay) or countries (hood). As others have said 'To me...' is a great way to clarify your position.

Agnostic vs Atheist
Uncorrugated comments on Apr 7, 2018:
Divided by a common language yet again. From my perspective:- Gnosticism = knowledge Theism = belief A theist claims god/s exists. An atheist does not belive these claims. An atheist does not claim that no god/s exists. As an agnostic atheist I do not know that a god/s cannot exist in any universe, but I have seen no evidence to confirm the claims made by theists. An anti-theist makes the claim that no god/s exist. There is a difference. The time to believe that something exists, is when there is evidence to support the claim and not before.

Do you consider your morning cup of joe, an addiction or a habit?
Uncorrugated comments on Apr 11, 2018:
I don't think of it. Some mornings I have tea, sometimes coffee and occasionally juice or water. It often depends on what I have for breakfast.
The definition of atheist is so weak.
Uncorrugated comments on Apr 14, 2018:
For the same reason that we have labels for lots of other things. It saves time. Labels are a convenient way of communicating. Not all labels are 'one size fits all' and not all labels are accurate, but they are a good starting point. If you don't like the label because it desn't fit, then don't use it. Personally, depending on the definition, I don't think the definition of atheist is weak. If there wasn't a significant number of people out there who believe in some sort of god, then there wouldn't be a need for anyone to say they don't believe in god. I am an atheist. I don't generally run around bragging about it and I rarely tell people about it in general conversation. But the label does accurately reflect my position - I don't believe the claims of theists that gods exist. That's it. No other word accurately reflects my position on the god claim. And that's all it is. It doesn't say anything about my politics, the way I think, my sexuality or my morality.

Uncorrugated comments on Apr 19, 2018:
I think all drugs should be legalised and regulated. Every society of all ages has had their mind altering drug of choice. It is human nature. Full legalisation (not just decriminalisation) will reduce addiction and harm - it will allow for better controlled research will give allow users to make informed choices about their drug use. Better purity and consistent doses will reduce harm/likelyhood of overdose. Drug related crime will likely reduce significantly freeing up police resources. Increase in tax revenue can subsidise treatment schemes for those with addiction issues. Win - win scenario all round. I doubt it will ever happen, as governments don't see any of this a vote winners. And just to clarify, apart from very occasional beer or glass of wine, I don't use recreational drugs.

Uncorrugated comments on Apr 25, 2018:
I support your right to strike, but have no idea what you are trying to gain from it as your plight is poorly reported over here in the UK. From what I know, I assume that austerity is a big thing over there too and funding is being cut for salaries and education in general. Whatever your reason, strike action is not one that workers of any sort, take lightly. So if your conscience says this is the only way to highlight your plight and make progress towards a solution - then go for it.

Incest: Immoral or Moral?
Uncorrugated comments on Dec 14, 2017:
I couldn't vote because the question is particularly skewed and unclear. First I would need a working definition of morality - are we talking about wellbieng or something else? Are the siblings thinking adults of an equal standing who can make an informed decision of consent? And why is the question specific to brother and sister? What about brother and brother or sister and sister? Or even brother, sister, brother, brother and sister for that matter. Several posters have highlighted concerns about the possibility of birth defects in the event of unplanned pregnancy, but I feel this is just a distracter from the initial question and allows an emotional response and not one based purely on logic. If you take the view of some religions that sex is purely for procreation then it is probably unwise to breed with your siblings. If you think that sex between fully consenting adults just for pleasure is acceptable, then I see no reason why sex between siblings should be considered 'immoral'. Our socialisation and the norms of the societies in which we live will impact on our yuk factor and make it difficult for us to think rationally on such emotive issues. Probably not much different than asking a Christian why they believe in God.
How comfortable are you with the word "Atheist" ?
Uncorrugated comments on Dec 21, 2017:
Completely comfortable with it. I do occasionally have to explain that I am atheist and not anti-theist as some people struggle to accept that not believing a claim is true is not the same as believing it is false.

Anybody else love churches?
Uncorrugated comments on Jan 4, 2018:
As a lifelong atheist, I love going to churches. Churches, especially over here in Europe, are often magnificent pieces of architecture and history. I am fascinated with their history, now they were built and the human story behind them. Within a 20 mile radius of my home I have over 50 churches which are over 200 years old, including one which dates back the the 13th century. We also have a huge concentration of ancient buildings and stately homes in Northamptonshire too, but it is the style and accessibility of churches that I really appreciate when out on my travels.

Formal Education
Uncorrugated comments on Jan 15, 2018:
Went to uni to qualify as a social worker, But I've always been an atheist. Even at primary school I could't accept the supernatural stories that didn't make sense. Who made god? If he was always there, what did he do in the eternity before earth? Why did he keep killing people? My dad had always told me to ask questions and make up my own mind, so in some respects, yes, education made me an atheist.

I often had that problem with some of the students I work with until a teacher recognised that I was making assumptions about their prior knowledge and learning and used a ladder analogy. There is no point trying to show someone what is on the top step unless they have first climbed the bottom steps so that they can see what you are looking at. We often assume that others have a similar understanding and knowledge to us which very often isn't the case. It's also how economists and politicians convince the masses that giving more money and tax breaks to their rich friends and putting austerity on the masses will allow the rich to employ more and make the poor richer.....

Beer drinkers

I had to respond other again as I enjoy most beers. I generally have a preference for a dark mild or stout, but would choose different beers to complement the food if I am drinking with a meal. Not a great fan of the harmless fizzy pop sold as lager over here, but there are some superb European lagers out there if you search them out. I have also found a few great American craft beers too - they occasionally appear in our supermarkets. I have also just found a specialist beer shop which has recently opened not too far away - a bit expensive, but has a great selection of beers and lagers from craft breweries around the world.

Sweden is full of trees. They ruin the view! Never been to Japan, but would be in the top ten of a lottery win tour.
