It would be a good way for historical archaeologists to date excavation levels in landfill sites. A hundred years from now, a team of researchers are excavating a landfill, and all of a sudden, they start turning up bell-bottom trousers and tie-dyed tee-shirts, they'll know they've reached the 1970s. A little further down, and they start turning up women's girdles, with the garter clasps, and they know they've hit the 1960s. Mickey Mouse hats and coonskin caps, the 1950s, and so on. The same goes for consumer fads, like transistor radios, and hula hoops.

Glorification of the US Military goes back to the post-Vietnam War period. The Pentagon decided to undertake a massive makeover of the military's PR image. One of the methods they used was to make available to filmmakers, cash grants, if they were making a film that glorified, or inspired sympathy for the military.A similar project was undertaken by the old Law Enforcement Assistance Administration, to improve the public's perception of the police. In that case, funds were made available to offset the production costs of 'cop shows' on TV. So, the US population has undergone nearly 50 years of pro- police/military psychological conditioning in that regards.

We had a 'fort' in a nearby patch of woods. So me and another kid spent the rest of the afternoon stockpiling it with bbs for our bb guns, and with whatever canned food we could sneak from the kitchen cupboards. No Russky invasion occurred, and we spent the next several days glued to the television. I was even watching when "Little Sparky" from Chi, whacked Lee Oswald.

About thirty years ago, I was sitting in a Pentecostal Church in a small Alabama town. The head Preacher and his wife had just returned from a vacation in Maui, paid for by the congregation. The Preacher described playing golf with some wealthy businessmen. When they asked him what business he was in, he proudly told them he was "in the God business!". And I thought to myself, he sure is! Then, his wife came out, in a mumu she had bought there. She was big as a house, and looked utterly ridiculous in it. At that point, I had to bite my lip to keep from laughing, as I mused over the origin of the mumu. It seems a missionary from Boston was prosyletizing out there, back in the 1850s. And he would send letters home to his wife, lamenting about the nakedness of the "heathen". Especially all the young Hawaiian girls running around naked. Well, his wife thought she would do her 'Christian duty', and have the ladies of her sewing circle sew together patchwork dresses, and ship them out to Hawaii, to clothe those poor, naked girls with. When the preacher got them, he distributed them amongst the island women, only to discover his wife and her friends had made them all in extra-large sizes! When he asked her about that in a letter, she replied "well, you didn't tell me what sizes they wore!". The God business sure has its funny moments!

And people in all countries are conditioned from childhood to view the State as a parental figure, e.g. the 'Fatherland', the 'Mother Land',etc. And any external criticism of 'Mommy' tends to bring out a hostile reaction.

But I had such a fun time browsing through all those match books, I decided to keep it, and add to it. Eventually however, I did sell it. But It was really a great collection!

davknight comments on May 15, 2019:

And yep. Southern English is one of the four main dialects of American English. The others are, General American, New England (" Bahston"), and Northeastern (" I gotta walk my doag"). Believe it or not, there are eleven sub-dialects of Southern English.
