Interesting to speculate on the reason why. “Streamlining the platform” doesn’t quite seem credible to me. Interesting as to what customer reaction will be in an age in which people seem to love broadcasting such aspects of their “identity.”

I’m a huge Douglas Adams fan — read all the books in this series and many of his essays. (I enjoyed the various filmed versions, but the books give one so much more!) I still remember eagerly anticipating a new book from him when I heard of his untimely passing. Brilliant thinker and wonderful storyteller.

Today we’re experiencing traditional Gaucho music and dance from Argentina.
The-Krzyz comments on Mar 29, 2021:
Few North Americans know that the descendants of Europeans and Indigenous peoples fought for control of the Pampas (plains) — and survival — in Argentina, with many parallels to what happened in the U.S. The Gauchos of today have a high percentage of Native heritage, because the lifestyle and familiar location provided an avenue for integration into the dominant culture while keeping connections to a traditional heritage.

The-Krzyz comments on Feb 27, 2021:
I have no problems with it. I’ve used platforms like Zoom for years, and they make a lot of my work possible, allowing me to reach and collaborate with people despite the limits of geography. I still prefer doing things face-to-face most of the time, but that’s different from “fatigue.”

The-Krzyz comments on Nov 3, 2018:
I may be hazy on all the options, but I know renouncing US citizenship as part of the process of establishing citizenship in another country is one way, and serving in the armed forces of another country can lead to loss of citizenship. The-Krzyz comments on Jun 18, 2019:
Why, oh why, people listen to the rantings of entertainers, athletes and the like? This fool’s remarks had nothing to do with “correctness,” political or otherwise. Are you a "Season's Greetings" or "Happy Holidays" person?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 26, 2019:
I live on the edge of a very big and very diverse city, and hear all sorts of holiday greetings, and often in several languages. “Merry Christmas” and “Happy Holidays” are the most common. I will respond to them all, however, unless they are delivered in an aggressively religious tone, but will usually lead with “Happy Holidays” because I don’t want to assume what people believe or celebrate, if anything. I enjoy the season, and have no problem with the “spirit” of Christmas in a Dickensian sense.

The-Krzyz comments on Oct 10, 2018:
I had to choose Asia because of it’s size and all of the many different cultures and culture zones there (even though I could argue for Eurasia: That Europe and Asia are geographically one entity). Am especially interested in Central, South and West Asia, because that’s where my paternal roots are, and I have “genetic relatives” in the Hindu Kush mountains and on the steppes of Kazakhstan!
Happy Tuesday Everyone. Today's question is - how much stimulant do you usually take in in a day?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 16, 2020:
I start my day at dawn with a fresh-brewed mug of espresso, dripped over a bit of condensed milk. I typically have a second cup in early afternoon, but will add more depending on workload/deadlines/company. (Back in my journalism days, I reached a peak consumption of 16 cups in 24 hours as I worked some very long days with frequent overnighters.) I enjoy tea, too (both green and black), but my primary allegiance is to coffee! (For fellow aficionados, I highly recommend Michael Pollan’s short history of “Caffeine,” a quick and very fun read.)

The-Krzyz comments on Dec 11, 2018:
I’ve read this and similar studies and it seems to me that what can be truly destructive is social isolation, of which lonliness can be a result. We are deeply social creatures, and have been so since before we became modern humans. We use each other as reference points and reality checks, and without that sort of contact and feedback, our judgement suffers and perspective narrows. Our greatest achievements have been collaborative (science, for instance). Downside can be groupthink, peer pressure and social dysfunctions, but I’ll risk those and would rather deal with them as opposed to missing all the intellectual, material and emotional possibilities my fellow human beings can offer.
