Social movements & progress quite often travel in a twisted path. I don't think (& I sincerely hope I'm right) that this is more than one of the dips that happen in our generally "upwards" movement. Hopefully a last hurrah for the reactionaries. This may be a fight that the next generation has to see to its conclusion, or, it may take longer, & believe me, I hoped & worked for it to come sooner, as I am a true child of the '60's & '70's, but "We SHALL overcome!" We will not stop striving for what is right.

phxbillcee replies on Feb 4, 2018:
I see christianity as a definite negative on American society, now, & see a number of them as working towards a xtian theocracy in the future. I also see islam in total as a worldwide threat, even the moderates, as they give cover to the extremists, just as moderate xtians do to the extreme of their religion. I see religion, period, as the biggest problem, hence the reason I consider myself an anti-theist. I do happen to agree with much that Hitchens brought up in "god is not Great", & much of what Harris has said about the dangers of Islam. It makes no sense to ignore these very real problems in the name of "liberalism". I also agree that Israel has committed, & is still committing, many human-rights violations, both in country & in Palestine. Just like we have India/Pakistan, Myanmar & their muslim population, the former Yugoslavian areas (Bosnia, etc.), Ireland, the list goes on. Religion is not the only reason for these conflicts, but it eggs them on & gives them cover & excuse. Religion poisons everything!

On a first date: Should you be honest on a first date or pretend you are what you think the other...
phxbillcee comments on Jan 31, 2018:
I think you should be honest, but you don't have to trot out your whole history right away (unless directly asked, then don't lie). Many of your questions will be answered, even if not in detail as the date progresses, so no need to push right away. Just be honest & be yourself.
phxbillcee replies on Feb 1, 2018:
No, be honest, but you don't have to give a full autobiography & treatise on every subject on the first date. The point of a date, especially a first date, is to have fun, not spout soliloquies.

The biggest cover-up in human history (literally) Books of Revelation
Dwight comments on Jan 25, 2018:
Actually, Revelations as it turns out was a first century rant by an irate citizen predicting the fall of the empire. See Pagel, et. al. It does not predict the end times and never was intended to.

Realize that we keep reaching out, a bit at a time, tentatively, just as you do, for we are just as leery of being hurt. You can just write to us without a commitment & at least be honest, but to just drop the whole conversation & leave us hanging & THEN say, "oh, there's nothing out there", well, please, meet us half-way.

stinkeye_a comments on Jan 28, 2018:
The issue at the heart of the "Aziz Ansari conversation" is not Aziz Ansari, or #metoo--its how we've been socialized to be uncomfortable with communication. Have you seen the meme making the FB rounds that says (paraphrased) "The reason we can't talk to each other about religion or politics is ...
phxbillcee replies on Jan 28, 2018:
Yep, the biggest thing, in my mind, that came out of this incident was the lack of communication or at least the lack of understanding. I think both parties have a responsibility in any relationship/dialogue/interaction. Women need to speak out clearly & men need to listen. Now, most men are hoping to "get lucky" so they will, even subconsciously, ignore subtle cues that point to "No". This is not an excuse, just what men are hard-wired for. We can overcome this. But, & this has been "generalized" in many a comedic bit, women often expect men to pick up on things that are really often just not "seen" by them. The old, "If you don't know why I'm upset, then that is the problem." type of thing. Ladies, consider us thick! Most decent men will not only stop if actually told to, but will be apologetic to the rafters. We have mothers & sisters & friends, we have been taught to be respectful & wish to be. But we want to get laid, too! If that is not where you want the relationship to go, Tell US! But, please, do not lead us on just for free drinks or a meal, that cheapens you & angers & confuses us. I am not, by any stretch, saying all or most women do this, but men are fragile, emotionally, & we are constantly on the edge thinking "are we REALLY liked?" most of the time, especially early in a relationship. I'm cool as hell, & still pretty durn cute, & I am not a newbie to relationships, but even I tend to be somewhat tentative at first...no one likes to be hurt or humiliated.

I surely agree with the last part of your statement, & the first is relatively harmless in most cases. Sure, anything may be possible, but what is probable? When I first started away from organized religion I hoped for a type of "Nirvana", I guess, that after one died you joined with a "Cosmic Mind" & learned/knew everything. Of course, this was the late '60's & early '70's, so other factors came into play, also! Nowadays I tend to lean towards the proposition that death is just...death. I think when one's brain dies, so does any possible consciousness. There MAY be more to it than that, but I'll be living with that outlook until further information comes by.
