I just received the most hysterically funny scam-spam email.

I haven't received a letter like this one for some time. I get a lot of scam phone calls from the IRS, threatening to turn me over to the "authorities" for not paying my taxes. The IRS would never call someone. They send a letter if there's a problem with your tax return.

@dalefvictor 15 seems to be a magic number many of my cats just fell short of reaching. my current batch are 16 and a half, 15, 15, 14 and a half and 14. so some of them have broken the spell already! yeah onions and peppers are bad for cats. how bad depends on the cat i suppose. wafer had his own vulnerabilities already but he was a fighter, too. g

@Trussell2069 he confesssed years later when he knew he was dying, not to hart but to someone who had worked for hart, and that someone kept quiet about it too, until he too believed he was dying, and then that someone told hart. then the someone didn't die after all (he did have cancer but it went into remission.) i don't think hart ever quite knew what had happened. but how was he to explain away being on a boat with a salacious name with a young woman in his lap? would he have been believed? he would have been mocked mercilessly and not believed. whether or not he should have quit, i understand why he did. g

genessa replies on Oct 21, 2018:
@dalefvictor oh i guess the spaghetti was made without onions! i had a cat, wafer, who had a congenital heart condition, exacerbated by the anesthesia given him to clear his urinary blockage, and which did finally kill him as he approached the age of 15, and he took medicine to prevent more blockages. the medicine gave him heartburn. since he was an indoor cat, he ate my clothing instead of grass to relieve the heartburn. anything red and anything woolen he would eat. i thought, he needs alkali, so i gave him raw broccoli. that became his thing. however, he was strong and could open the fridge, and habitually did so and took out whatever he wanted. i might have chicken or fish in there but what did he take out and eat and almost die of? spaghetti. onions, you see, are toxic to cats, and he was particularly vulnerable. so i bungee-corded the fridge shut from then on. what did he do? jump up on top of it and open the freezer! what did he take out of the freezer? corn on the cob! that was his favorite, though he could not digest it at all. he would hold it on the floor with one paw, nibble at it, shake his head because it was frozen and hurt his mouth, then nibble again. if i had set a place for him, perhaps all this could have been avoided! i don't KNOW if he would have used silverware. he was the kind of cat who just might have! g

genessa comments on Oct 20, 2018:

@Shaghaf ah okay, that explains the "our church" bit. well, he is smart, then, smart enough for maybe a simple but not dead-simple answer. tell him the truth, using his vocabulary (or like i did with my students, JUST above his vocabulary so he'll ask and you can explain). explain why "we don't have a church." explain that the other kids are not bad or stupid; they're just doing what their parents want them to do. all he needs is to tell the other kids they're wrong and get bullied, right? so you don't have to diss their parents or anything, just let him know "that's what they believe, but we don't believe that." he will ask more questions and you can take it from there! g

@GreatNani prayer does nothing, but HEARING that you're being prayed for apparently has an effect and in general it's not good. emotional and mental states affect physical health. i don't know the reason for it, but i can guess that many people think if they're sick enough to be prayed for it must be serious, and get nervous about that, which in turn is unhelpful to the actual condition. g

@Green_eyes i am totally against privatization of ANY government agency or entity, and that goes for the police too. i don't see why donations can't be transparent. i don't even think citizens united applies to donations other than to political parties (but of course citizens united needs to be overturned). if they were not transparent then yeah, big problem. i am not worried about optics for their own sake. i am worried about pay for play. if that is not involved, then i am okay with donations. g

@Pralina1 you have a right to your feelings, and you are right that you are not right -- not about your feelings of course (you can feel as you do, of course) but about your facts. islam itself doesn't encourage pedophilia. some muslims do. maybe even a whole subculture full of muslims. but it's not part of islam. it has a big problem: it's a religion. but you can't pin on it what it doesn't actually encompass. in missouri, a whole bunch of christians are pedophiles? does the christian bible say that's okay? i wouldn't know; i've never been christian (or muslim). i suspect not. so i can hate THOSE christians for being pedophiles, and i can hate those certain muslims for being pedophiles, but i cannot correctly say that either christianity or islam promotes pedophilia. i can say it... and i can say the moon is made of green cheese... but i'd be wrong both times. g

@HardBlues69 it had a surge protector. it was quite a fluke; apparently there was something in our neighborhood less than a block away that was... okay i am tech savvy but it's late and i forget what this was, but something underground, and the lightning hit is and it affected many people's computers it seems. i did manage to save the hard drive but not the motherboard. g

@PolyWolf still it creates a little sad hole somewhere. i lost a good friend on facebook a couple years ago. we were friends in college and after; i was at his wedding (catholic, my first time ever in a church, and i remember the priest wore tennis shoes at the ceremony). he and his wife and a few mutual friends used to drive down from new jersey to maryland or virginia (depending on the year) to visit me, until i moved to california. we lost touch and then found each other on facebook -- where he shortly blocked me. he'd become a born-again christian (his first NAME is "christian," actually) and was upset that i am pro-choice. mind you, i never actually HAD an abortion; i have never been pregnant. he was offended that i am in favor of other women making up their own minds about what can live in their bodies. he said we couldn't be friends anymore (see, he didn't block me summarily) and did not block me but unfriended me. i honored that and did not try to communicate with him after that. another facebook friend i knew pretty well, albeit only slightly face to face (and from another online venue before facebook) also explained why he had to unfriend me. when i saw how trump was rising to power, well before he was elected, i made the comparison to the rise of hitler. i didn't call trump hitler (i could have!) i just compared methods. my friend, jewish like me, but unlike me (secular) orthodox, was horribly offended by the comparison, which in retrospect proves to be quite apt. he said we couldn't be friends anymore. i respected that except for one attempt i made to communicate with him, showing him an article (maybe a year later) that said pretty much what i had said. what did i get in response? "fake news!" i guess he drank the kool-aid. is it better to know why? i guess. it's sadder, though. i can't hope it was an error. g

some breastfeeding moms work. some moms with nursing-aged kids cannot or will not breastfeed. some women earn more than their husbands. those who make less money often make less not because they do lower-paying work but because women make 70 cents for every dollar earned by a man doing the SAME work. it is actually nobody's business but that of the family in question who should support whom, and i might add that not all support is financial. oh and some families are child-free. a man and wife are a family too. g

@Aristopus i think we can agree that hypatia ever so slightly predates darwin, right? here are some things she said: In fact men will fight for a superstition quite as quickly as for a living truth - often more so, since a superstition is so intangible you cannot get at it to refute it, but truth is a point of view, and so is changeable. All formal dogmatic religions are fallacious and must never be accepted by self-respecting persons as final. Fables should be taught as fables, myths as myths, and miracles as poetic fantasies. To teach superstitions as truths is a most terrible thing. The child mind accepts and believes them, and only through great pain and perhaps tragedy can he be in after years relieved of them. Life is an unfoldment, and the further we travel the more truth we can comprehend. To understand the things that are at our door is the best preparation for understanding those that lie beyond. Regardless of our colour, race and religion – we are brothers Truth does not change because it is, or is not, believed by a majority of the people. not bad for someone who lived (and was murdered) in the fourth century ce. g

i don't know, just hearing it for the first time, that it's true. it sounds as if it might be generally true; i can't say whether someone before darwin might have been ahead of his or her time. darwin was certainly a gamechanger, though he didn't mean to be. i don't like to dismiss the entirety ...
