not really. judaism does not have that attitude, although individual jews may not understand that, just as scads of christians don't understand the basics of their own religion (god aside). judaism doesn't proselytize, doesn't dictate that you have to be a jew to be a good person or to go to heaven (different concept of heaven from the christian one too but that's another story) or anything like that. judaism dictates that judaism is true for jews. that's why the jews have 613 commandments for jews and seven for nonjews. but i will grant that MOST religions consider themselves the one true religion! g

I dont like it but its also not my decision but if i impregnated a woman and she was contemplating having an abortion i think id want a say in that discussion
genessa replies on Sep 5, 2018:
that would be true providing she had a say in the sex itself. there are states where it is being proposed that a rapist may decide whether his victim may have an abortion. let's assume the following best-case scenario: a man and a woman have had consensual sex, they're still together, he wants her to have the baby and she doesn't want to have it. that's a tie. who casts the deciding vote? well, the man isn't the one who has to be pregnant for nine months and then give birth, possibly with a c-section. traditionally, he isn't the one who stays home with the resulting baby, either, perhaps sacrificing his career, or his peace of mind. he isn't the one who might suffer post-partum depression. so in this tie, who has the more abiding interest in the pregnancy? g

genessa replies on Sep 5, 2018:
@IamNobody respectfully, i submit that sometimes we have to make decisions that seem foolish to others. i'm not talking about "don't rob a bank if you don't want to be arrested." i'm talking about civil disobedience, which is undertaken with the knowledge that the cops might not play fairly, for one good example. i don't know the percentage of arrested, or indicted, or tried people who turn out to be innocent, but those people, whether they did anything, or tried to avoid anything, or not, find they need lawyers anyway. people who are wronged need lawyers too, and that is not always, or even usually as far as i know, the result of their careless actions. i was named in a lawsuit once. i had worked for an editor and publisher who hated each other, on a book that was to have been an annual list of every movie ever made (ambitious much?) only the first edition ever came out. the publisher bought out the editor and proceeded to find a backer, who bought the book and published it. it was published with both of their names (and mine, and two other people's) on it. the editor sued us for plagiarism. plagiarism is when you claim someone else's words as your own. he was suing us for giving him credit for work he did! he hadn't stipulated, when he sold his share, that his name be left off, nor had he even requested that. it was a total shock to us. what did we do wrong? what care could we have taken? if we'd left his name OFF he could've legitimately sued us for plagiarism! as it was, he was suing us because he was a nasty piece of work, and for no other reason. i don't think this is uncommon! so yes, prevent the preventable, but don't expect that to prevent much! g p..s he dropped dead of a heart attack before the suit got very far. i suspect had it proceeded, we would have won, since his claim was ridiculous. but ridiculous claims do proceed, and lawyers are needed for those too!

Excluding sex or bathing, what activities have you done naked?
genessa comments on Sep 3, 2018:
Unless i am cold or have visitors, i do everything in the house naked. i just don't wear clothing in the house. my fiancé and i went to a clothing-optional resort in jamaica and i just loved it. i loved being naked outdoors. it was so liberating! it's certainly the only way i could ever ...

Which are your favourite cities/towns to visit?
genessa comments on Sep 2, 2018:
To visit? not los angeles, but i loved living there! to visit, hmm. magome (in japan). likewise kyoto. portmeirion, wales. dingle, ireland. paris! i loved new orleans both times i visited but i fear it may have changed post-katrina. i have not had a chance to go see. i love looking at the ...

Do you "dress your age"?
genessa comments on Sep 3, 2018:
Funny you should ask that -- funny to me, anyway -- because just the other day i was thinking about my decade in japan, and something one of my students said about my habitual attire. since i was a teacher, i was expected not to wear jeans, which would've been comfy, so i dressed in highly ...

genessa comments on Sep 2, 2018:
Oh these are nice thoughts indeed but they bear very little relation to reality. first of all, if you're really independent, you do what you think and feel, and that means voting for the people who say and do what you like. i like what most democrats say and do, and i can't stand what ANY ...

Why during christ lifetime wasn't there any mention of him by any scholar of the times
genessa comments on Sep 3, 2018:
Gentle reminder (not just to you but to others commenting) that christ is not a name but a title and that christ is not a good translation of messiah (which does not mean saviour). that being said, it is quite possible he never existed. if he DID exist, he was jewish, and a common expression of ...

For those who have done, or wish to, travel. How did you decide where to go?
genessa comments on Sep 2, 2018:
I have a question. i responded to this post and received notification from the site that my comment had been denied. i was not given a specific reason, but rather a list of possible reasons, none of which seemed to me to apply to my comment. there was a link to come here and edit, so i did so... ...

How much does it bother you when a person on the internet corrects your spelling, grammar, or misuse...
genessa comments on Sep 2, 2018:
I can generally tell when someone has simply made a typo (or maybe dictated the post) and when a person actually doesn't know what a word means or how to spell it. the latter bothers me and since i am an ex-english teacher and still a writer, i might or might not resist the temptation to correct ...

genessa comments on Sep 3, 2018:
Oh wait, i just remembered someone's taking revenge on me, and it had to do with religion too! how could i forget that? i worked for a summer, just for one month really, at a toys r us in maryland. i was planning to go back to school in the fall, but needed a job for that month. for the first two...

A friend from my bi-weekly atheist ladies Sunday brunch passed away this morning.
genessa comments on Sep 2, 2018:
I am afraid that without having known her, i cannot speculate about how her atheism helped her to make the decisions she made. it's certainly possible. i myself am about to find out (in a couple weeks) whether or not i have uterine cancer, so i might have to make a decision like, or unlike, that ...

Yep. you know what i see overused (not irrelevantly to this topic)? "spirituality." what the hell is spirituality? does it mean you believe in ghosts? does it mean you can see people's auras? does it mean you believe in god, but god is a tree instead of a person, or that you have religion but ...

Wisdom from the dark ages of 1998 for the internet era
genessa comments on Sep 2, 2018:
Computers don't value anything. they're machines. what people DO on computers is the point. the problem isn't that the people in question value information over knowledge or wisdom. it's that they have not learned to distinguish between facts and lies, and information that is mis- or ...

Does society owe lazy or stupid a living?
sellinger comments on Sep 2, 2018:
Society owes everyone a living, but in the form of work. You don't work, you don't get paid. Now stupid people may be too stupid to work so ssi is available to them, you know, for the severely retarded. Lazy people, that's a whole different story

All religions are simply how civilizations, throughout history, explained how the universe works, until science and technology came into being for them.
