What do you suggest for lifting help for a full grown man?
Amisja comments on Jan 31, 2019:
Please do not lift him yourselves. Sorry to hear about Dad's stroke. I have a link here to something called a 'sara stand' These are idea as they encourage independence and they help someone manage themselves. This is a British site but there are US versions, these are covered under the NHS so the cost may be covered by insurance. https://www.completecareshop.co.uk/moving-and-handling/patient-transfer-systems/able-assist-transfer-aid-view-large?gclid=Cj0KCQiA1sriBRD-ARIsABYdwwGocH9nNuJIYXzro7md7dXrN8QKJAFolN-zFS9RzFDATeNzcK_tFsAaAtmwEALw_wcB Just so you know my credentials, I am moving and handling lead for the school of nursing, so this info is the most up to date.

BREXIT. What the hell was that all about. Lots of hot air and voting and nothing has changed
Amisja comments on Jan 29, 2019:
Ok lets be honest and factual about this (because the vote wasn't) 1. We were fed lies. Some of us saw through those lies, for some it confirmed their bias (uh hum racists) 2. The vote was very close so virtually 50% of us recognised what a disaster this will be. 3. It was not the will of the people when what they voted for was bollocks (Like Mexicans paying for the wall, £350 mill would magically be paid to the NHS, a year). 4. We are European. My in-laws live in Cyprus, I know people who live in France and commute to London for work. Our lives are so intricately interlinked it will take us generations to separate from. 5. What we had before was not good. We still owed USA war debts, we had rising unemployment, hugely underfunded public services, civil unrest, bombed out housing stock and a dying (deliberately killed...spit Thatcher) manufacturing base. Worker's rights were abysmal and we still had a few noble families making legal decisions for the rest of us. 6. People did not want Turkish people in the EU (It was never on the cards because their human rights record is awful), because they are racist. They are stupid because once the Eastern EU people go we will have to get workers from other parts of the world. 7. We are stronger and more peaceful together. Even NI (up until a few weeks ago) has seen 20 years of peace. With an agreement gone there is no reason for that peace to continue. 8. Every single academic, economist, political analyst believes this is bloody awful idea. I'd go back to USA but I think you guys have it worse.

Amisja comments on Jan 29, 2019:
Really Emmerdale is that even still a thing? I am dreadfully dull as I barely watch TV anymore. Of the soaps I know there is Coronation Street which is as easily as old as me and set up here in the North of England. Eastenders is set in the poorer part of London. It is very popular in Canada. As I say, I don't watch a lot of TV. We tend to watch BBC news, local news, then CNN for US news. We do binge watch Netflix stuff. I must say the most recent rendition of Les Mis (non-musical) on BBC is superb. I don't watch commercial TV as my parents were weird about it and its stuck. I just find I easily get bored watching TV but I know there is lots of quality out there.
I am about one half of the way through the Netflix's film POLAR.

These things happen The advice below is all valid. Alcohol binges dehydrates you, this in turn reduces the blood supply to the brain, and kills off a few thousand brain cells (don't worry you have 100s of billion and so does sneezing). You need water, rapid acting carbs so sugary pop is a good choice, in fact full fat cola is the best and pain relief. Sleep helps too. We all know about the hair of the dog (which works too). Unfortunately hang over will get you. Avoiding over indulging is not always possible but alternating a alcoholic drink with a non-alcoholic drink works well. Stay well

One day my sister sat down in my living room and got upset saying how much she was grieving for her little girl. It really struck me. I think I was always thrilled by my lovely nephew, but thinking about it, I miss that little girl too.

At the risk of upsetting gun owners, Have everyone noticed that we are having multiple murders ...
Amisja comments on Jan 27, 2019:
In a different time the mindless psychopath was king (quite literally). He could rape and pillage his way through life, taking what he wanted and demanding respect off 'lesser' men. That was our model of an alpha male. Served by women and honoured by all. That is basis of toxic masculinity. This became the go to model for arbitration. The idea of discussing areas of conflict were (are) considered 'soft'. Men particularly who are not able to fight their way through conflict are disrespected. A man (or child) with a gun, is always respected. Add to that an imbalanced mind or explosive anger and it is a recipe for mass killings. As a Brit the personal ownership of guns seems bonkers, however I appreciate I do not have a voice in the matter...except I have two American sons. The fear of school shootings was one reason we came back to UK. We need to honour learned gentle men and allow them to feel.

How do you feel about people?
Amisja comments on Jan 27, 2019:
I have to say, in my life there have been very few people I actively dislike. I do dislike some people's politics, intolerance or their greed but overall I consider what my Mum used to say, 'Everyone starts off as a babe in arms'. I do not believe any person is born bad, anymore than any sycamore tree is. Put a tree next to a car-fume filled motorway, it may grow but may not be what it could have been. The same goes for people.

Shush your 'not good enough' voice.
Amisja comments on Jan 26, 2019:
We call this a CIV 'Critical Inner Voice'. Its alright to have one. We (mostly) all do. Its what keeps us in check and allows to live amongst other humans. Unfortunately for many of us, this voice takes precedence over our self-soothing, self care voice. (Again most of us have this). Now what we know about the human brain is it responds positively by making positive statements (even if you don't believe it). So what we might try to saying 3 self soothing comments to ourselves in a mirror. So do this, 'I am doing the best I can', 'I am the best version of me I can be' 'I am alright'. Try it. The CIV will try and jump in...thats alright, it just wants attention. Just try the positive self soothing statements once a day.

The USA experience from a UK perspective.
Amisja comments on Jan 25, 2019:
Awreet there Richard. Lancashire lass here who brings a different perspective to the discussion. I am a US greencard holder (although they may want it back now) although I returned to UK 18 years ago. I lived in AZ for many years. I have travelled back several times since. Previous to that I lived in SE Asia and travelled for 10 years. The UK, for the most part, is a diverse nation who have always eventually accepted the influx of different cultures, religions and traditions. Our history of this goes way way back, even further back than the Romans. Of course we have our own racists and those who are particularly loquacious on whatever subject they believe in, but generally they are silenced by the pragmatic mass of British society. There are many differences to USA but here is my take on it 1. The UK, has for decades followed policies of multi-culturalism rather than assimilation. I could write reams as to the problems inherent with this and these policies can not easily be undone without cries of racism. 2. We do not have guns. I am not saying we do not have murders because this is patently not true. However it means that physical fights are common and murders less so. People can and do sort out problems violently without fearing being shot. 3. We do not have the same right to free speech. We do (HRA, 1998) but not to the same extent. Celebs can sue, we need to ensure anything we say is not considered hate speech or promoting violence towards religious groups. 4. For the most part we do not have a religious right. Traditionally in the UK religious people tended to be politically left leaning. British conservatives are the party of business and a laisez faire approach to worker's rights. 5. It cannot be overstated, we shipped a lot of the religious fundamentalists to US. This gave a clear message to Brits, "you can have god but he comes third after football and beer" 6. What you see are extremes. Good telly requires it. In my experience, most Americans are hardworking, pragmatic, sensible people who just want to get on with their lives.
Fairly new to the community just wanted to say hi
