Why do so many people believe in Noah's Ark?
Amisja comments on Jan 11, 2019:
Because its a fun story, whatever faith you come from.
I'll give you something to cry about...

Amisja comments on Jan 11, 2019:
Erm its an Agnostic site and some members feel the need to talk of the damage they felt religion inflicted on them...ditto for Trump. As a non-American member who never had a negative religious experience, I am happy to allow my fellow members to vent if they feel they need to. To answer your question...yeah.

Amisja comments on Jan 11, 2019:
Yep...no one in family was religious. I was about that age and asked my Mum why god had to be a boy. She said it was just that way. I said I thought it was rubbish and she agreed.
It seems that being atheist or agnostic is now looked at as a type of religion

Amisja comments on Jan 11, 2019:
Here in the UK, I remember a couple of cases in the 1970s where children of JWs were denied blood transfusion due to their parent's faith. The courts stepped in and made them wards of the court. I don't think we heard of these things again until more recently with children being beaten to death because their carers believed they were witches, however these acts are definitely not protected in law.

A Growing Number of Scholars Are Questioning the Historical Existence of Jesus [bigthink.com]
Amisja comments on Jan 10, 2019:
I have spent a number of years considering this, looking at the diminishingly small amount of evidence and here is what I believe. Jesus existed. 1. He was a nobody, and most humans throughout the history of the world had no special mention, why should he be different. 2. There are two historical contemporary sources that speak of this character. 3. Why go to the effort of making him up? 4. Until Paul, Jesus was never ascribed divinity, he was just a guy with a message. 5. Romans crucified people on an industrial scale and virtually never commented on it. 6. He is exactly opposite what Romans understood to be god. They would never have invented such a well...loser to be their god. 7. People of this nature have always existed, they still do. 8. The messiah thing came later, after his death. 9. He wasn't all that nice. Again neither ancient Jews no the Romans would have invented such an essentially flawed character to be a god. 10. Anthropologists, examining oral histories have been struck by how profoundly accurate they are, so we cannot discount documentation written 40-50 years ago. He was not called Jesus, was not blond or blue eyed, Jesus was probably married and may have had children, he was a brave charismatic character who dared speak up to his oppressors. He was disliked by the Jewish authorities and the Romans. His one miracle was he gave people a voice for a short time. He was not god, he was not divine, he did not create miracles but I guaranntee he existed.

Any one feeling like all hope is lost with the new generation?
Amisja comments on Jan 9, 2019:
Absolutely NOT. This generation are the least racist, sexist or homophobic of every previous generation. My parent's generation left a lot of crap to sort out and are still living off the fat of the 1960s. We haven't done much better but this next generation are. They are standing up and being counted. I remember watching that that young girl from the Parkland shooting get up in front of the world and state categorically they were not accepting this any more and she did so in front of the glare and sometimes open hostility of the world. They daily face open criticism from people online, they are scrutinised constantly. They will not have huge fat retirement plans like my Dad's generations and in UK at least the boat has sailed on generous benefits. They are likely to face an aging generation and it is these young people who will be wiping our asses (sorry English, a bit basic). Every single day I stand in front of my student nurses and feel proud of them for what they have decided to do. Our young people are the great hope for the world's future and we should blooming well treasure them #deadproudmum
I really need to say something, and I figure here is perhaps the only safe place I can say it ...
Amisja comments on Jan 9, 2019:
I think this is an entirely US thing (happy to be corrected as I have heard people from Australia say something similar). Here in UK, politically religious people tend to be more left wing and indeed several leaders of the Labour Party where children of the clergy. The right follow a Neo-liberal/ laise fais approach to business and tend to be harder nosed market types.

Should people who have a gene for a terrible disease (MS,LGD,etc) be allowed to have children?
Amisja comments on Jan 8, 2019:
As has been mentioned, genetics don't always work out like that and testing is not available for all diseases. Should we rule out anyone with diabetes having children? Or the mentally ill? Or gypsies? Or Jews? What know from modern Germany is that despite the mass execution of millions of people including the mentally ill, people with genetic disorders and learning disabilities is that these still occur in just about the same number as before. Why don't we instead concentrate in developing effective genetic counselling, improved testing and cures.

Amisja comments on Jan 8, 2019:
Yes and you gain superpowers with each level! Of course you need to get to level 8 before you get some of the really high powered skills. Us level 8's have been known to regularly do the modern equivilent of water into wine...plastic into wine, as in these small plastic cards you take to the shops!
I realized something the other day.
Amisja comments on Jan 8, 2019:
I believe in Jesus. As in I believe it is likely, on the balance of probability of the direct evidence and some of the gaps where you would expect evidence, that some itinerant Jewish hippy type wandered around the middle east getting on the nerves of the Jewish establishment and Roman rulers. In fact I believe in some of the so called teachings, the stuff about being jolly nice to people and sharing and stuff. I don't believe in a magic god baby or miracles or being some highly exalted individual. Its like people saying, 'I don't believe in religion'. Religion exists, if it didn't, it is likely we wouldn't on this site.
This has probably been discussed before but here goes.
Amisja comments on Jan 8, 2019:
I think you need to reconsider this question. As for free will, we like all other creatures in nature, have very little free will and respond only to internal chemistry and external environment.

Am I the only one who has noticed a marked decrease in civility in comments on posts recently?
Amisja comments on Jan 6, 2019:
I don't know, I think that civility remains in certain arenas but overall society has become so much more relaxed in the manner in which they speak. Obviously, thst is mirrored here. I always try to model the conduct I expect in others and try to ignore the rest. If someone is out and out racist or sexist, then I feel duty bound to comment. I am unlikely to be crass about that. I found when I lived in USA, swearing was really quite matter of fact. I think it is perfectly acceptable to remind people to speak to you respectfully.

Amisja comments on Jan 6, 2019:
Crikey, I have caused a bit of a a kerfuffle here. I don't want to go into lecturer mode but type 1 is not in any way based on lifestyle. T1D's are usually diagnosed as kids and tend to be underweight. They have no natural insulin and cannot cope with any carbs without injecting insulin. Someone with poor control will go into something called diabetic ketoacidosis, which can be fatal. Type 1 diabetes is much rarer than type 2 but is far more serious. My son had DKA and is still recovering slowly.
I resemble this statement

I loved churchy stuff as a child. For much of the reasons RichieO gave. For a start I am English, the CofE was so low key, nothing was banned and they accepted women and gay clergy years ago. I attended a grand 18th century building and sung pretty songs with like minded people. Most of whom went in the pub afterwards (including the vicar). We were encouraged without it being groomed and certainly allowed our own voice. I had already decided I didn't believe any of it and was vocal about that. (I was friends with the vicar's daughter, hence me being there). It was fun and I totally see the attraction of a community, of friendship and feeling safe. Maybe if we could replicate that without the fairy stories, we'd be ok.
