@AncientNight yes...that was the biggest downside...not seeing the grandkids grow up, not to mention the great-grand kids! But they are making a life of their own now, and not a lot of interest or time for me...😢 , which was true when I lived closer!

@AncientNight I had much better luck. Over a 25 year period I must have had at least 20/25 therapist and only 2 that I remember could not relate to me. (But I also did a lot of research and reading on my own, I never depended on any one person to have all the answers.). Nevertheless, I gleaned something useful from the ones that could not relate to me...everyone cannot be expected to relate to me and that is perfectly ok.

@AncientNight That sounds like a plan. When I made the decision to move so far away from my children...there was a worry that we would loose our effection or somehow even our love. And, it has turned out to be the opposite. They seem more forthcoming and caring toward me and when they visit we are happier together. The niece and nephews that were on the ‘fence’ back in Ga, have not adjusted by being happy that I am here...they seem more distant! My friends who I now see less are the same as they always were! So that’s life. But, life is still better for everyone when we are happy.

@AncientNight Everything about each human is individual. That I agree to. This grief study is from research and not ‘pop culture!’ At a basic level we are all human with the same brain layout. But environmental factors has a determining factor in which parts of the brain are developed in one way or the other. It’s all in our brain as to what behaviors we adhere to and even our coping skills.
After thinking about our discussion on ‘wisdom,’ it occurred to me that to know if our counsel is ‘wise’ we must first apply it to ourselves. How would we know if something makes sense, if we haven’t put it to the test in our own lives. I think that is what I have done...I have applied all that I have learned on myself first, then I know how to pass it on to others.

@AncientNight I know and I have read your post. There is a very good possibility you are hung up in one of the 5 stages of grief. It is a ‘real’ process and it could help you to try and find some counseling on that. I know all about it, but I have forgotten all the details...I just learned the process...so now it is a kind of automatic response when I must face that kind of grief! I believe grief is the hardest thing that we ever go through...so who can do that easily, not many people that I have known. I had help, I hope you can find some help with that, you deserve to move on! Your wife would want the same, if she were here to say...🤗

@AncientNight That sounds like a great idea...since I have moved 2/3 across the country I have a new lease on life (but loving the West also matters). It makes new brain cells, anytime we are forced into unchartered territory! I was pretty decrepit back in Ga, and my whole family took up ‘arms’ (emotional) against me over this move! And, now they are ‘aghast’ (I see it in their faces and they confess), at the transformation to my physical health and my mental state! In fact there has been a major shift...and often times I say to myself why didn’t I have ‘this’ years ago? Somewhere along the way...’life,’ robbed me, of essential knowledge and I kept having less and less to work with! Now, this move was not without many hitches...there are still a few even today...but I am living a ‘real’ life (that fits me), I am on purpose, everything I do. I do it on purpose! So I have the ability (my brain is better) to solve whatever problem comes up! (I am still scared and sometimes angry over ‘stuff!’) But, because I have figured out what makes me happy...all those family members who kept trying to run my life...have stopped! Lol. (Being 1500 miles away has helped, he he.)
We live and learn...we don’t base our life on the past (we do need a clear vision of what we want our life to look like as we progress into the future), but the best life is lived in the moment! We do make amends for our errored ways of the past and still we need to make this our best moment!
I am a mother of 5 children and because I had few ‘people skills,’ when they were small children, my actions caused great harm...not only have they let me know it, but I ‘knew’ it as well...after the fact! When the force of that knowledge really resonated..,I wanted to die, because l loved my children more than anything else and I caused life altering harm to the very people I loved the most! Now, working with them and myself...we have tried to correct what went wrong, and I can still have days that some hurtful action to one of them comes to my mind...but, I don’t ‘live’ there and I get out of ‘the past’ into the moment! I need to be my very best for ‘them’ now...I can’t change the past. ‘Life is a journey, not a destination!’ Work out your past, to see the error...but don’t ‘live’ there! What would be the gain? I am for what best benefits us...not what hurts or damages us now. Good luck!

(Try for 3 pages). This will free up some brain drain. And, then ck the resources that others here suggested! Don’t give up until you make a good effort to overcome this blocked place...you owe that to yourself!

@JackPedigo my mother was 84, and up until the 6 months before she died, from her heart attack...she was still causing havoc and appeared to have little senility! I thought she seemed to mellow during that last 6 months, but it could have all been an act! She had fooled many people before!

I am paraphrasing words from you that I have taken to heart! I have struggled with this same idea for myself, but I have come to realize we are not our past...we are not our pain AND, from where we have been and what it took to get ‘to here’ is valuable! We became something wiser...that we use for our own good and...can be a beacon for others that may define their human worth by their past errors! We are not our past...we had a past that we clawed our way out of it, to a better place! I am useful, just being me! I don’t have to ‘preach’ to people and I don’t have to hide who i am...like I did in the past (because I thought I was not ‘up to par’)! It takes work to make a better life from a broken one...and a live example of that, speaks volumes to others, that need a better direction. When my Sociopathic mother ended up in a Hospital (for evaluation) for the criminally insane in Ga...after she shot at and missed a cable repair man, then threatened to shoot her favorite grandson, I went to visit her and the staff told me that my mother ‘got along well’ with the criminally insane patients there! She was well known at her courthouse and yet, no one could ever bring her to account! They feared her, I found out after her death! This is what we face with trump!

In these kinds of situations...I read it and make a note of it all...then I watch for calibrating evidence. Sooner or later, more information comes from even unexpected places...that will refute are support previously reported stories.

Your mother spoke from ignorance, all kinds of people find people to love them! But, I do know from personal experience that a depressed person will take this pronouncement ‘to heart’ and it becomes their ‘swan song.’ Depression calls everything about us into question...then slams the hammer down! This is not who you are, there is a chemical in your brain that is not performing properly...so when you can get that in balance...you can find the answers that you need for yourself!

@Sansdeus you say that you believe yourself to be a good person...if this is true, then give ‘your good’ out to everyone you meet. It is a ‘giving’ from your nature...not something used to impress someone. Really ‘see’ that other person, anywhere you meet them, and show your acceptance of them as they cross your path. This will help you to feel connected. As, there are many people hurting and we never know it (I have been one of them myself). So use your good nature for others and especially for yourself! This is a slow process and you must practice it regularly.
That ‘other source of fulfillment’ is when you can accept yourself fully and find ways that support you...like what do you enjoy doing, what makes your heart sing or what makes you feel at peace? Do those things!
And, be prepared to ride out some really bad painful feelings after a divorce (or any breakup). They are second only to a death in a relationship. So they are painful for quite a while...I have experienced 3 divorces and they were all very painful. It took time...lots of time, struggling to divert attention from the pain. @Sansdeus you say that you believe yourself to be a good person...if this is true, then give ‘your good’ out to everyone you meet. It is a ‘giving’ from your nature...not something used to impress someone. Really ‘see’ that other person, anywhere you meet them, and show your acceptance of them as they cross your path. This will help you to feel connected. As, there are many people hurting and we never know it (I have been one of them myself). So use your good nature for others and especially for yourself! This is a slow process and you must practice it regularly.
That ‘other source of fulfillment’ is when you can accept yourself fully and find ways that support you...like what do you enjoy doing, what makes your heart sing or what makes you feel at peace? Do those things!
And, be prepared to ride out some really bad painful feelings after a divorce (or any breakup). They are second only to a death in a relationship. So they are painful for quite a while...I have experienced 3 divorces and they were all very painful. It took time...lots of time, struggling to divert attention from the pain.
