What is more important: your genetic genome or your nutrition?
t1nick comments on Aug 6, 2019:
Your food does not change your genetic make up to the best of my knowledge. Your nutrition can do a couple of things: 1) Your cells have a life span and that as you get older they begin to degrade and become less viable. Less are produced to replace those that die, and the replacement cells are less strong than when you were younger. So nutrition is relevant to maintaining cell health, and 2) Your body is like a machine in that its needs to be properly cared for. You abuse it, it doesn't last as long. You take care of it, it lasts longer. Nutrition is part of that equation. With regard to hereditary diseases, often hereditary proclivities exist in your genotype. Often they not express themselves so long as you are healthy and maintain a strong immune system. However, if you are exposed to an extended period of environmental stress (any stress that you experience), your immune system weakens. When it weakens, it opens up the possibility that a hidden gene may get turned on. The gene expression is suddenly strong enough to express itself, where before the immune system suppressed it. But food does not alter your genetics. Radiation does, random genetic drift does, major changes in environment and stress may set your prodigy up for an alteration, but it won't change your genetics.

Mass shootings. Perhaps it's a societal issue like obesity and religion?
t1nick comments on Aug 6, 2019:
Every country on the Earth have people suffering from mental illness, yet they don't experience mass shootings and murders. There are people with mental illness that have no business even being around a gun (red flag laws) in this country. But the common denominator in all the shootings isnt mental illness, its guns.

t1nick comments on Aug 4, 2019:
Mental health is an easy scapegoat for not acting to pass intelligent and responsible gun control. First, every country on the Earth have individuals suffering with mental illness. Yet, it is only the US that experiences such a multitude of mass shootings. 250 since January of the year. The common denominator is not mental illness, but the guns. Yes mental illness has been a factor in several of the shootings. Many people looking for simple answers find a scapegoat in wanting to claim that anyone perpetrating a mass shooting must be mentally Illness. Many for sure, but not all. Many who perpetrate these heinous mass shootings know wrong from right, but make a purposeful choice to fulfill an agenda. If just the ability to shoot numbers of people signals mental illness were true, then all our soldiers fighting in wars you could claim were suffering from mental illness. Not to be confused with the instances of PTSD as a consequence of their war experiences. By the above logic, in order to kill the enemy willingly or begrudgingly means you're mentally ill. That is why the common denominator is the gun.

Ronald Reagan called Africans at UN 'monkeys', tapes reveal - BBC News
t1nick comments on Aug 3, 2019:
This is consistent with the Republican Party line; then and now. Republicans have practiced racial and sexual discrimination throughout my lifetime. Let me make a case for my assertion. Let's start by stating a primary tenet to the Republican Party platform. Republicans believe in fiscal responsibility, leading to lesser central governmental control. I don't think many would disagree with this statement. Well, given that at that time of Reagan, almost all of the economy was held and controlled by white males, of course they wanted less outside interference. Less interference meant they could continue to control the counties wealth. Controlling the countries wealth lead to a reluctance or abhorrence for supporting social programs and the less fortunate in society. Given these "less fortunate" individuals were not actively participating in the economy, but reliant upon those individuals that were (again white males) they therefore must be of lesser value since their contribution is less. Therefore, since they are of lesser value, they are lesser humans and worthy of ridicule and indignation. Calling them "monkies" is alright, they are lesser. Only difference is that with Trump it's out in the open and the official Party platform. IMO this has been an underlying tenet of the Republican Party for as long as I can remember, and I'm 65 years old.

In the literature they refer to the ornamental trades goods (beads, comes, cloth, etc) as foofaraw (also sp. fofaraw, forfarraw, and froufraw). According to Merriam-Webster the origin is unknown, but become popular around 1848. My point, I wonder if this word is an anglicization of Fallalery???
I assure you, medieval people bathed. – Going Medieval
t1nick comments on Aug 3, 2019:
This appears to be an attempt at an academic discussion. However, the language utilized at times tends to leave me skeptical in the credibility and research veracity of the author. Some the drawn conclusions were tenuous at best. I had been lead to understand that during Medieval times bathing by the peasantry was looked upon with suspicion. Most peasants at the time equated diseases with water. They thought that most diseases were passed on through water. Thet were not sure of the reason it happened, just considered water the source. I am not a Medieval historian and my expertise is limited to non-academic research into the period. Just an vocational intetest.

I’m 35 and have decided to go back to school. I’m terrified. Any advice?
t1nick comments on Jul 28, 2019:
I went back to school at age 54. It was for a PhD, after a 20 year hiatus following my Masters. I graduated at age 60 with my degree. That may be a little different from what you are experiencing. If at age 35, this is your first foray back into formal education since high school, your challenges are different. The advantage to returning at your age is wisdom and experience. You've been out there in the real world and have accumulated lots of information that should aide in your motivation. One, you now have the wisdom and experience to know what you don't want and what hasn't worked for you on your journey in life. Second, you have more discipline than you might otherwise have, a lot of it related to the knowledge of what this moves means for you. It will be challenging and replete with difficulties. But the end goal is a more marketable you. A chance to move your life in a direction you choose as opposed to be dependent on the whims of the economic tide.
Facts don’t lie.
t1nick comments on Jul 28, 2019:
Obama brought us back economically from the brink. Its amazing how Republicans conveniently forget the Great Recession that Obama inherited upon entering office. When Trump took office the economy had stabilized and was slowly and steadily growing. It is true, growth had plateaued wasn't growing as fast as many wanted. It's also true that many economic indicators improved. Some of that is the optimism attendant with a new Aministration. Some of it relates to the short term gain by the role back of regulations (albeit short sighted and detrimental in the long haul). Wages are up, but that had stagnated for at least two decades, so an increase was long overdue. Unemployment is down, but the type of jobs that were created are lower paying and mostly service industry. They are the type of jobs that do not pay benefits, are not fulltime (a purposeful method to avoid having to offer benefits by claiming they are not fulltime employees). Black and Hispanic employment is truly up, but it was so far below the national average, that it only took a few job increases to positively improve the numbers. Many people at it below the poverty line still need two or three jobs to survive. Trump's supposed economic improvements haven't changed that fact for many on our society. The marginal improvements experienced by most people as a consequence of the Republican Tax Cut is waning and beginning disappear. The percieved advantage to the Middle class has just about tun its course. Another year and the benefits will no longer exist.

Robert Mueller : 1.
t1nick comments on Jul 24, 2019:
Chapter One - Collusion and Conspiracy are colloquially conflated, but not necessarily the same. Mueller did not get an opportunity to clarify as his questioner ran out of time and Nadler moved on without delay. Non-colloquially, collusion entails the meeting, exchange of information, and/or collaboration with foreign agents or governments. The report does illuminate several instances where collusion, as defined in the previous sentence, occurred. The difference is that it does not appear to rise to a concerted effort to purposely seek out and access foreign government assistance. instead, they were taking advantage of an offer from outside agents (Trump tower meeting). Criminal Conspiracy is technically is a legal term. It entails the willful intent to meet, exchange information, and/or collaboration with foreign agents or governments with the intent to gain an advantage. Mueller's team could not establish an direct and intentional act to establish such a link.

As such, they are crowding assets into the Persian Gulf with hopes of incurring an incident that provides them with the justification to escalate to war. Trump is an idiot and has little comprehension of the foreign policy issues involved. Trump is placing honerous economic sanctions on Iran. In doing so, he alienated the moderate faction in Iran which was not anti-US, and provided fuel for the hardliners to recapture public opinion. In fairness, Iran has been a bad actor in the past. They are not an innocent actor. The US engaged in regime change to install (another example of our meddling in sovereign countries politics) the Shah. The Shah pushed westernization too quickly for his conservative Islamic society. So they revolted and threw him out. This set the stage for an adversarial relationship in the area. Iran has been a terrorist haven and supporter of Hesbollah. I do not know if we didn't understand the depth of the divide between the two principle factions of Islam: Sunni vs. Shite (its history is similar the conflicts between Catholics and Protestants). We hooked our wagon to Suadi Arabia who is Sunni (Suadi Arabia is a bad actor in the region), while Iran is Shia. We inserted ourselves into a historic religious war. Basically it all comes down to controlling the flow of oil and gas out of the Persian Gulf.
