Some people say that practicing gratitude is good for your health.
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 29, 2018:
I am grateful for: 1. Kitties 2. Children doing well. One of my kids texted me while I was at work to make sure I was OK after my fall on Friday. 3. I still have a job, and my job has good health benefits. 4. Friends, especially the fine people here 5. My snug home 6. No long term damage from my close encounter with the concrete on Friday. 7; That I live when I do, and pretty much where I do. (I love history but life was hard way back then and the US ain't great anymore but there are worse places.) 8. Maybe most of all, I'm grateful that I'm still here. My mom died at 45. I just turned 60. My mom never got to see her grandchildren or grow old with my dad, or any of those things that are the rewards of being a mom/wife. My kids never got to know my mom and she would have been the perfect Grammy.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 29, 2018:
I live near the middle of the US of A. Omaha, Nebraska. We have almost no accent, or a "Walter Cronkite" accent, we are a hegemony of various accents and cultures. Largely settled by immigrant farmers, Nebraska is highly conservative once you get out of the wicked cities. I grew up in the state, then left for almost 30 years. Moved back in 2005. The summers are hot, the winters are cold. My kids decided to stay here when they grew up, and therefore I will stay here.

Of course we knew she was terminally ill, well the adults did, I am not sure if it was ever spelled out to my sisters and me. It was mid morning, and then I got distracted by school work. When we got home the adults let us know.

Faith?.... just have faith said the members.
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 29, 2018:
I have some faith, or I think it is faith. Turning to the dictionary again, Faith is defined as complete trust or confidence in someone or something. I have complete faith that Donald Trump doesn't give a damn about anyone or anything except his own best interests. I have total faith that I will die one day. I have complete faith that people will do stupid things from time to time, and I will also screw up from time to time. Do I have faith in an unseen deity? Oh HAYUL NO! (sorry, imitation southern there.) So when someone tells me to have faith, I can tell them I already do but it isn't in their imaginary friend.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 28, 2018:
I think life is more than just sex. As I remember sex was pretty good, but so is music, food, and children/family, and art, and so many other things. Sex is pretty basic and we've evolved. Life is making a difference, and being connected.

Have you ever had a partner succumb to mental health problems?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 28, 2018:
My ex blames the end of our marriage on my mental health issues. Truth is we both had or have mental health challenges, mine were being address and treated. Neither of us was a danger to self or others. but his method of dealing with his issues did not make for a good relationship or home life. Everyone is happier since we split, and the kids have told me they wish I'd done it sooner.
Just a thought.
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 28, 2018:
That was one of the points of the Protestant Reformation, that the common folks should have access to bibles in the common language. The priests of course did not want that, that would mean giving up some of their authority and power. It seems to me that religion has never really been based on love for humanity. It has been about how can I get power and money over these ignorant fools.

What tricks do your pets do?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 27, 2018:
I have cats. The tricks are making mama run when she hears a crash from another room. And feeding them before she feeds herself. And the best trick of all, making Mama wad up cash register receipts into little balls which we will play with for hours and then shred for her to pick up. When I had a Golden he was trained to wait when humans were on the stairs, to ring a bell when he wanted to go outside. He was trained to bark on command both with voice and hand signals. He had sit and stay down pat, and he'd search out a semi hidden object. He had several hand commands, I could have him lie down and wait from a distance. Chief was trained to wait until released when we put his food bowl on the floor, and he was trained (by accident) that "uh oh" meant go clean up food spills off the kitchen floor. The dog liked frozen broccoli. He would toss a biscuit off his nose and catch it. Do your duty meant go take a poop. Chief has been gone about 9 years. He was the best brother my girls ever had, and the fur son I never gave birth to. Best dog ever.

Bad, bad, bad advice. What is the WORST advice someone ever gave you out of love?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 27, 2018:
When I was in my mid teens (1973) my mom's family had a reunion, and two of mom's sisters and their families brought my sisters and I along with them to Florida for the reunion. Mom had died a few months before and this prompted the semiannual family reunions. One of my uncles gave me the worst advice ever, but for the time it was pretty normal. He told me to never let a boy/man know that I was smarter than he was. It would destroy my chances of finding a husband.

Last February I took my first solo vacation. I went to Corpus Christie, TX because I wanted a winter vacation to someplace warm. I enjoyed it. I've taken business trips, and I've taken trips to meet someone, , this was the first trip just so I could see a new place. I touristed, read, ate at good restaurants, and did some shopping. In the fall I am planning a trip to Winnipeg for three reasons. I can drive there, and I still have an active passport, and I've never been there. When I came home from Corpus my daughter told me she was proud of me for striking out on my own.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 27, 2018:
Seriously, when we were on a long trip I had kids being brats. I made them copy bible verses. It was effective in that it got their attention and the crap stopped. I can't say I never spanked, but I was more the type to "make the punishment fit the crime" or find an alternative punishment. I was spanked hundreds of times, and to this day I think much of it was my parent's frustration at having too many kids and not enough money. I also insisted on accountability, which is so not done these days. And I have AMAZING kids today.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 27, 2018:
Most employers over a certain size have to abide by the Family and Medical Leave Act, which means allowing you time off to care for family members or your own serious medical condition. I often see FMLA paperwork in my job, and sometimes I glean important information from it. I've never had a reason to use it, but I know it is there if I need it. You don't get paid using FMLA, but your job is protected. You do have to pay insurance premiums, I believe.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
