@BestWithoutGods In my high school they didn't the review the autobiography of Fredrick Douglas or slave literature. It might have been in the library but I didn't know about it. Their history of the construction era was about the horrors of former slaves getting in the state legislature, not Jim Crow laws. Welcome to mythological heritage with students who weren't eager to do outside reading and confront their teachers. The basic gig about public school is teaching the view the local parents can endorse, i.e. happy slavery. When HS grads get out in the real world discover **most** the blacks they rub elbows with aren't like they were they were told about.

The column wanders off into other topics, so I put up the relevant parts. I interpret it as a local national guard of the 18th century. It was for local communities to defend themselves foreign invaders, Native Americans attacking remote villages and any riot that might happen to break out. Without a local defense, by the time the US Army got notified to save a remote town the show could be over. When the 2nd amendment was written, they didn't even have a telegraph to call in the Army. Ergo my theory now we have electronics, we could eliminate the the 2nd amendment. With the gun lobby, no way that will happen. >C'est la vie! It's not about life. @BestWithoutGods I often see people flying confederate flags from their homes and pickup trucks. I call it mythological heritage. Poor ignorant white people in Dixie want to think they were descended from the wealthy intellectual class that sipped juleps on the veranda and the slaves were so happy to be outside of Africa they sang in the fields all the live long day. Shall we roll our eyes in unison? For most free people in pre-civil war Dixie, it was a hand to mouth existence on subsistence farms where death from mosquito born disease and starvation were real. I have to say "free" because there were well off blacks and Native Americans who owned slaves. Got any poor ignorant white people in Tennessee who believe in mythology? If you haven't **seen** a Klansman, haven't personally met one -- they don't have much influence in your community. There's racist groups under a ton of different names all over the United States and it's not just whites that join them. Racism is an equal opportunity employer. Ask any Korean who survived the Watts riots of 1965. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center we also have the Nation of Islam that they say promotes "innate black superiority over whites."

@uncle-ernie We'll always have cut'n'paste. I think that works: In the 220 days from January 1st through August 9 there has been at least 249 mass shootings in the Unites Snakes! That is more than one mass killing a day every day since New Years. Most were committed by right-wing loonie toons egged on by Lying Donald! For once I agree with Lying Donald when he said, these mass shooters are "mentally ill monsters." Funny thing is, Lying Donald signed a bill revoking Obama-era gun checks for people with mental illnesses, and now the chickens have come home to roost! Funny thing is that Lying Donald left that out of his speech on mass shooting. Funny thing that, eh? How many times has Lying Donald whipped up his base of fascist thugs and nut cases to do just what those two morons did last week-end. One said that it was Lying Donald's rhetoric that drove him on. Since 2019 isn't a leap year there are 365 days this year so at the current rate we may expect at least another 145 mass shooting if things go as they have been going, and all the politicians have to offer the victims are their thoughts and prayers. In other words there will be absolutely nothing done as long as "Moscow Mitch" rules the Senate! The Second Amendment gave American's the right to bear arms if they were members of a state militia, that was put in there so that slave owners could control their slaves. Since there are no legally owned private slaves, only the government can own slaves, there is no need of militias, but let's keep the ownership of guns legal but make that only for flintlock rifles and such that were the arms in question in 1776. One shot and then you have to reload which will take upwards of a minute. While that won't stop people from killing each other it will put an end to mass murders, no matter what Lying Donald says!

Even stranger is the tale of Joshua Abraham Norton, known as Emperor Norton I, emperor of the United States and protector of Mexico. It's a long story but I'll keep it short. His delusions were endorsed by the citizens of San Francisco in 1859. So much so, he issued his own currency to pay for minor stuff like opera seats and lunch. His money was **accepted** and often framed at local businesses. They treated the local crackpot as established royalty. Today Norton's currency is worth more than US currency. Save your confederate money....

WonderWartHog99 replies on Aug 9, 2019:
@t1nick Tito would attack the neighbor's German shepherds if they got into the yard or came anywhere near me. I learned to hate him because Petunia complicated all our weekend trips by bringing him along with us. We went off for a week to see my mother, 500 miles away. Had to bring Tito with us. Want to take a wild guess who had to walk the dog at rest stops and gasoline stations? Stop at a roadside attraction, we had to take turns staying with her wildly overpriced puppy dog. We're on our fifth generation of cats. They've never gone anywhere with us. We never put a cat on a leash. Unlike Tito, we never bought a cat. Sometimes the local animal shelter gives them away with a shot record after they've neutered them. (That's for grown cats. Everybody wants to adopt a cute kitten). Neither us or our guests have stepped in cat shit in the yard. Show a cat a sand box, it knows what it's for. It gets housebroken instantly. After several tries, Petunia could never housebreak a dog. We got rid of the dogs once I found out she had no intention of buying or replacing fresh litter for their kennel. Walking them daily wasn't on her agenda.

The only time I encountered the Klan, they were handing out fliers at traffic corner. They weren't wearing hoods. Most of the time they don't wear hoods because they block their vision when the hood shifts around on their head. Originally, they'd wear hoods while in the Black neighborhoods so the Blacks wouldn't track them down. It is well worth noting that since the 1920's and 1930's KKK has been steadily declining in membership to the point where it's hard to find them.

We have all month to see fall colors at peak at different elevations. Even better the show starts on **the most scenic** highway in America, the ridge running Blue Ridge [mountains] Parkway. It was designed **just for tourists** during the Great Depression. There are no bill boards, no businesses and no commercial trucks or buses. At least one scenic pull off every kilometer so visitors can go ooh and awe at the scenery. For fall colors, it's got New Hampshire beat. There's also a short tourist railroad in nearby North Carolina, the Smokey Mountain Railroad. It runs alongside the Nantahala Gorge. You can look out the port side at the white water rafters. (I picked the starboard side). We went first class. Got to see the fall colors and kudzu vines. They have a steam locomotive for some of the trips. We need to thin out all the plants that reproduce by making clumps of bulbs and make a record of which bulb is related to which plant. That word "we" stops Petunia in her tracks. I have given a few plants to my neighbor next door. They're so plentiful, Petunia hasn't missed them.

True story: I hung a five hook coat hanger next to front door. Theory was we would come in out of the cold and put a coat on it. When we went out, we would take the same coat. Petunia wouldn't take her coat off the hanger. Instead she kept adding to the coat hanger until my coat vanished under about 45 coats. Two months ago, the weight of the coats ripped the hanger off the two wood screws that fastened it to the wall. Currently **all** the coats are piled up on a love seat next to the front door. It's going up to 97F (36c) today. She's waiting for me to put the hanger back on the wall. I'm waiting until December to donate the coats to charity. Who needs 45 winter coats anyway?

Thank you. It was one of Petunia's master plans that **worked.** If you get day lily catalogs it bores into your skull that many of the hybrids are $40 a bulb. The good news is they create clumps (four to eight) of day lily bulbs. Over a decade ago, Petunia was reading an ad about a day lily farm that was going out of business. They had hundreds of different hybrids day lilies. They were selling them for $2 a clump of bulbs -- you dig. There she was with a big brute of a guy, extra shovels and a pick up truck. She knew what the expensive ones are and we filled up the truck twice with clumps of bulbs. We might have picked up more bulbs had I not said "We got to plant these. We're going into manual earth moving if we keep at it." We have a different day lily blooming every day all summer long.

Therefore the person who **already** has murderous intent **and** plays shoot'em'ups will aim for the head. Body armor doesn't cover the head. One might argue killing trons elimitates murderous intent but I've yet to see a study of how many killers ALSO play video games. Peabody's Improbable History was one such example. (Released as a movie in 2014). I especially loved the premise of a dog who adopted a boy instead of the other way around. They were time travelers, changing history as they went with the line "Sherman, set the way back machine for . . . . " You'd forget Snidely Whiplash who sometimes lapsed into psychological self-evaluation for tying Neil Finwick to the RR tracks. Besides the puns, what endeared me was the punch lines aimed at the adults.

While serving time on unrelated charges, he made the mistake of telling his cell mates how he clubbed her to death. They turned states evidence for early release. I wrote a story about one of his adventures that got him thrown off a Navy base in a college level creative writing class and got an "A." They thought it was fiction.
