@linxminx I have seen at least 3 cases of sex abuse. That one. Interestingly enough, that guy and I had words beyond being nice. He was my daughter's basketball coach briefly and she and some teammates came to me. Not sex, verbally abusive. The Middle school head was told he couldn't fire him - another, not working at the school parent put him in his place. Prior to that, when my eldest was in 11th grade,, tbe music and drama directors got involved sexually with 5 boys. A lot of kids used to hang out at the guys' house. My son never saw anything; he was a good singer and in all the plays. In that "big" scandal, the DA had to recluse himself as his daughter used to hang out there as well. One guy got 5 years and the other 10. Then there was a female teacher who, after her husband left her, started hanging out with some of the kids in one class. I knew she was smoking weed with some of the kids, but didn't know til much later she was sleeping with an 18 year old. Her family were big supporters of the school financially. I'm pretty sure that the headmaster found her a job out of state. Add to that my time at a catholic school with some really crazy nuns - one, Sister David was there one year. She was sent from school to school. She apparently had a penchant for naive men from Africa and would foster them. I have worked on the ideas for a novel. One absolutely crazy nun needed to be pulled from teaching when the kids rebelled. And the religious teacher who had a breakdown and broke his hand trying to punch his supervisor. I thought he was going to come at me before an assembly when I intervened over him screaming at his homeroom with obscenities like "fuckers." I was younger then and was planning on standing my ground on that. The Dean of students intervened and sent me back to my kids.

@linxminx I agree, and most colleges only have light reigns. My son's school left him alone with one exception and they came to him and said he couldn't print anything. It was something he wouldn't have printed without further investigation and they nixed that on that issue. And, ot was a legal issue that when they "solved" it was bound in secrecy by a litigation. I know some ivy schools have absolutely no interference rules. In college, our advisor never read until publication. I was an assistant editor and bureau chief and I actually stopped an article because the writer had no evidence. She was pissed and later quit. I took up the article and investigated, trying to be open about it. Honestly, she was just pissed at student council over a personal issue. I was a firm believer that an op-ed shouldn't be censored (I offered that to the editor and the woman) and that all stories need to be well researched. The story my son couldn't print - a counselor had an affair with a student. How that haunted me - the guy came to work at the high school where I worked. My son told me; I told my boss; they kept him. A few years later, when I was on the student assistants program, someone reported him having a relationship with a student. I reported it. Got yelled at. I face palmed the boss, told the boss I was obeying the law and it was in his court. After a bunch of crap, the guy got 5 years in prison. After a very long, about 7 years or more, the family's lawsuit was settled.

And if the one person has more standing and the accused witch isn't liked, etc, they get convicted and executed by beheading, usually in a town square. Easy enough to Google.

I see the two as separate issues. As far as college and any school's newspaper, SCOTUS came down long ago on the output from papers. The schools' heads were deemed little different from owners or editors just like in the mainstream press. I was a college journalist ( not my major) and later a high school newspaper advisor; my oldest was the editor of his college newspaper for 3 years and told me about at least one story he had to bury (that was something the college could not legally allow to have its name attached to; ironically, that knowledge came back to haunt me and really haunt my school). Editorial oversight is different from removing and banning books, especially books that have high standing and have proven their worth.

@phxbillcee Yep. I worked with guys who did that in the Navy. They did do their best. They even set off grenades, injuring some personal. And, for the North, it brought more unwanted attention as the US sent in more troops to the South and hardend their stance. It also occurred at the same time as the Tet offensive, which took up more air time on American television and radio. Thus those guys were often a forgotten news story,, except when propaganda photos were released. The Tet offensive was at the same time the North's greatest loss (men and later territory) and its greatest win (the anti war movement went from the left to the center in American politics).

What is happening to the Uyghur in China is is disgusting. The Chinese government do not care about anything but themselves. They are afraid of any organization whether religious or not.
Beowulfsfriend replies on Jan 21, 2022:
@rainmanjr The Chinese do retraining; they also kill more Uyghur's by percentage than Mandarins, etc; their goal is more ethnic cleansing (like Tibet) than religion, but religion is a big part of the Uyghers. China has also been forcing Muslim Uyghurs to have non Muslim relatives live with them to make sure that they toe the line. China has a 100 year plan and while the US doesn't have to agree with it, we need to recognize that it is coming and we can do little to stop it.1) they don't allow internal division be it religion or ethnicity or, hell even QiGing (outlawed a sect with 100 million followers). 2) getting their territorial disputes to favor them - this includes a piece of India (which would allow them to run a road and train line to Pakistan; land in some other Southeast Asian countries (fought 2 wars with Vietnam already); claiming most of the South China Sea; taking over Taiwan. 3) becoming a global power by using similar colonial actions in Africa and South America that Europe and the US used. The world, UN recognizes India's land sovereignty, so that war is on them. The UN says the South China Sea is open to all, thus that is an area of dispute the US has a side to be on. The UN does not recognize Taiwan as an independent nation, and, legally, neither does the US. Thus Taiwan is the flash point most dangerous for the US as we tend to promise some protection, which, in a conventional war, we cannot win. The US has taken on the role of world policeman, and, quite frankly, we can't sustain that without great damage to our economy and people's health. We are the Great Britain of 1890; and we all know what happened there.

This is truly one of his best dialogs yet. Maybe we should start referring to history classes as propoganda classes.
Beowulfsfriend replies on Jan 20, 2022:
@Lauren I wasn't in Texas. I was in a very red part of Pennsylvania though. It was a private school which, at one time, was very progressive. One of my friends, who still teaches history there has encountered blowback from some parents about Jan 6 and his insistence that the students do REAL and Proper research on what actually happened that day. After 14 years there and my 3 kids gone, I left. For years it had been a bastion of liberalism with great parents. Not so much anymore. As far as Satanic Verses - my honest opinion is that it is a fairly average novel that shouldn't have alarmed or upset anyone, even devout Muslims. However, I realize that any fundamentalists, if their core beliefs are questioned, get upset. The novel is a bit of a slog with lots and lots of allusions. My daughter did her 1st year of college at a Jesuit school, LaSalle, in Philadelphia. She had to take a freshman religion class. She got an A. I was a bit surprised about the professor's lack of knowledge at a fairly well known school. The prof said something about and asked about some not being catholics, yet thought everyone was xtion. My daughter raised her hand and said no, that she was a non Christian Unitarian. That prof didn't know what an Unitarian was. My daughter spent the class explaining.

Beowulfsfriend replies on Jan 19, 2022:
@Lauren AP has a pretty much standard agenda and if teachers vary from it students will suffer on the tests. I expect schools that are "dumbing down" will experience less success. Unfortunately, many high school text books that are used nationwide have a lot of Texas influences due to its size. California also gets some say as well. Text book publishing, although profitable, feels it needs to be standard to what will sell everywhere. Thus, fewer choices exist. Having been an English teacher, I could supplement with novels of my choice (pretty liberal school when I was there). I even taught Satanic Verses once - mostly because I wanted to read it and see what all the fuss was about. It was the only time I "taught" a reading while doing a first reading myself. I told the class. One of the Ivy colleges had a chapter by chapter break down available - that was actually more reading than the novel. I think the only time I ever pulled one of the copies out of the closet again was to playfully tease one of my Muslim students. I told him I would make him read it; his father was Iranian. I said, "I know your Dad, he won't say anything to me. But how will he react to you? He'll want to know all about it, which means you will have to really read it." Cute kid, he countered by asking to touch it and noting he didn't burn.

Sometimes they too often are. Sometimes, we don't know everything and make the wrong assumptions. That is why we need to learn and adapt and look for the best ways to find the real facts. I graduated HS in 1973. I was always reading the banned books and the newest takes on history. I lived in a very rural and conservative area. At that time, historians were finally outing James Buchanan as gay. Buchanan, his final resting place and mansion being nearby where I lived, was still revered as a local past President who, albeit made some bad decisions tried hard to be a good man. Obviously, he was a shit President and helped bring about the Civil War and even I knew that. Some of our history teachers had accepted that, but were still denying that he was gay. They said he may have had an inappropriate relationship with his niece. They preferred accepting incest over homosexuality.

How do you manage burn out and people leaving the medical profession understaffed?

Anyway, the family wanted the school to pay, more than an insurance company, and demanded 2 million; they eventually won.
