@HippieChick58 I've not worked just substance recovery but have done some group therapies for psych and although religion and politics are "off" limits one has to bite one's tongue for the often offhand thank God type remarks. Not worth the time or, especially, an argument that will not benefit anyone at that time.

All rehab and recovery programs have high recidivism rates. The faith based ones are just as high and some even higher. Even AA and DA have adapted, not calling on god as a requirement. They still insist on some type of "higher power" and that is ensuring some failures. The best systems work on lighting that internal flame based on yourself.

@KKGator forced religion is the worst. Didn't have that myself, but saw it. My parents were non practicing, marginally Christian. My mom, raised Southern Baptist, still had bad ass strict parent controls, but not with god. Asked her as an adult why we weren't pressed into the SB life and to her credit, on that, said I didn't want to inflict it upon you.

The UU's I've attended are far from Christian. Two of my kids consider themselves UU and neither is Christian. In Romania the church is still Christian and even its roots here are Christian. The ones I have attended have people of many religious thoughts including athiests, agnistics, Jews, Christians, Wicca, and much more. On a side note: I am curious about the huge, beautiful UU church near Central Park in NYC.

There are some generalities that can be placed on large swaths of some continents. Many places in Africa remain very spiritually conservative. There still are many nativist religions there as well as strict versions of Islam and Christianity. Granted, there are also people, especially in the large cities, that are more secular. One can also make some generalities about South America, but it is modernizing as well and breaking form. Having been forced to become Catholic, many of the people in S.A. follow their religious memes. Of course continents have multiple countries and ethnic groups and vast differences as well. If there were not differences, fears, and superstitions, and rivalries there wouldn't be as many regional wars.
