Sometimes I find comfort in his observation that there is no bad arrangemnet of constellations or the zig and zag of a coastline. It just *is*. While this is not a reason to eschew any self-improvement, it reminds us that we are who we are because of those things that make us unique.

WilliamCharles comments on Mar 28, 2018:
The public's working definition of an "assault weapon" is anything with a handle. The ban proposals extend as far as any semi-automatic rifle, as well as clip capacity or fixed nature. Some suggest an allowance for grandfathered features/accessories though you'd have to argue on what basis others are denied. A track record for not causing any trouble? That would allow for weeding out the irresponsible (domestic violence, some level of criminal convictions, etc.). The 2nd Amendment has never been about the right to hunt (save slave catchers), and a militarized police force is the thin blue line before martial law brings in the military. It's always been a numbers game involving the masses and power. Both arms of power (LEO & DoD) operate on an implied premise that they require and deserve zero casualty ROE. That means, a civilian rebellion must resign itself to mass casualties to even consider going against the dominant prevailing power. How bad would things have to get before you joined the ranks of Spartacus? How indifferent would government have to be to treat citizens like the enemy and brutalize at will? Back in the day union organizers were beaten and murdered assisted by industry and the power of the state. Nowadays, is as simple as labeling/defining someone or group as terrorist, thus immediately losing all due process for all intents and purposes.

Do you still have CDs, or is all your music on an MP3 player/cell phone?
WilliamCharles comments on Mar 28, 2018:
The compression on digital music, particularly with mp3s, means the sound is inferior. Recordings nowadays deal with this basically by just boosting the highs and lows, washing out much of the richness of the sound.

You may not always be aware of the others choosing to follow this same path as you, but they’re out there, and they’re making a difference.” ~ LanceThruster [from Debbie Mitchell's book "Growing Up Godless" - Sterling Publishing Co., Inc.]

"We can be as honest as we are ignorant. If we are, when asked what is beyond the horizon of the known, we must say that we do not know. We can tell the truth, and we can enjoy the blessed freedom that the brave have won. We can destroy the monsters of superstition, the hissing snakes of ignorance and fear. We can drive from our minds the frightful things that tear and wound with beak and fang. We can civilize our fellow-men. We can fill our lives with generous deeds, with loving words, with art and song, and all the ecstasies of love. We can flood our years with sunshine — with the divine climate of kindness, and we can drain to the last drop the golden cup of joy.” Robert G. Ingersoll, The Works of Robert G. WilliamCharles comments on Mar 8, 2018:
I'd put it next to my Book of Mormon as being equally fanciful. As Alan Watts once remarked, the bible is inspired, but not as a revelation of a supernatural entity, but as insights of mortals as to the human condition as best as they thought to express it. All the best to you in dealing with your grief. Think of their gesture as no more troubling than a "Bless you" after you sneeze. It's not as if we fear their so-called revealed knowledge.

WilliamCharles comments on Mar 4, 2018:
I'm in the high desert. My drip irrigation clogged and I had pretty substantial die offs of trees and shrubs. I plan to eventually get landscaped with drought resistance plants. I also have room for adding raised bed planters to grow edibles (The soil being otherwise fairly inhospitable). I particularly want to add shade structures that can handle the extremes (wind and temperature shifts). The trees are nice have turned out to be a little too high maintenance and boost the water bill. On my photo page is the last 3-4 miles to my property. It's 1.2 acres with a dilapidated corral. When I get my finances in order, I'm considering goats for weed abatement, or even participating in the donkey rescue program.

I'm having a colorful exchange about gun control via fb.
WilliamCharles comments on Feb 17, 2018:
It's a difficult discussion, to be sure. My biggest concern is the trading liberty for safety argument. I'm all for keeping deadly weapons out of the hands of the unstable. Proper background checks seem like a no-brainer. One of the aspects of the 2nd Amendment that is often overlooked, imho, is that it ensured the most lethal firepower available at the time to its citizens. It is not about the right to hunt. I obey all the firearm statutes in my state, but am subject to being out of compliance with the stroke of a pen. As the police become more militarized, an armed citizenry is being treated like an afterthought. I will support sensible legislation and better enforcement of the laws already on the books. But it also occurs to me the same people who insisted that gun control is not gun confiscation, also call for an outright ban such as took place after Port Arthur, Australia and Dunblane, Scotland. Good luck with your exchange. I find the people most strident about it are rightwing god-botherers. I've already seen them blame it on no prayer in schools and commie liberals (for their impact on societal norms). There's an incredible amount of anger on their part. If the shit hits the fan though, it would be open season on those who don't buy into their delusional worldview. And with the incompetence of government leadership and the possibility of their implosion, this scenario is not unthinkable.

I am pleased the amount of female representation here. Regularly watch some of the atheist talks/debates on YouTube. I like the way physicist Lawrence Krause talks about facts in terms of probably (such as being 95% certain of something). It helps me when trying to connect the dots in political discussions, such as I'm 99% sure Trump helped launder Russian mob money, but think the probability of the Russians actually hacking our elections and costing Hillary the presidency less than 10%. The media talks about the latter as near 100% certainty without any evidence.

Why does society focus on looks instead of knowledge?
WilliamCharles comments on Feb 11, 2018:
I think part of it is evolutionary to an extent. In general, "looks" connote the state of one's health, societal status, and attention to hygiene. Add to that, the details of that attractiveness as far as popular culture changes over time. Being rotund and undarkened by toil in the sun was a sign of prosperity. Now tan and thin is in. Personal preferences play a part outside of societal norms as desirability often seems to run the gamut.

I'll trade you. Being visually intrusive can be tuned out somewhat. My neighbor's kids have the loudest modified exhausts and mega bass subwoofers on the planet. The noise pollution in an otherwise quiet neighborhood is truly maddening. The cops do shit about it as it comes and goes as opposed to coming from the house. The parents are worthless, too. My revenge is to call the sheriffs on their illegal fireworks at their 4th of July block party every single year. I actually don't mind the fireworks, but if they choose to be douchebags, they got nobody to blame but themselves.

WilliamCharles comments on Feb 10, 2018:
I used to write almost exclusively online under the pen name "LanceThruster" but FB made me change it to my real name (check out my LanceThruster page on FB for heavier political content). I sign my name William and go by Bill. I had a southern GF that called me William as a term of endearment which I quite liked. The nom de plume was necessary as having often spoken out for Palestinians, I'd regularly get harassed by Zionists. I also liked that it sounded like Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon, with the added bonus of the double entendre. People would ask if that was my porn star name, and I'd ask, "Are you hiring?"
Fellow agnostics, how do you feel about believers joining?
WilliamCharles comments on Feb 10, 2018:
I've already encountered one seeking to defend the faith as it were (a generic assertion that god exists, without much in the way of defining the term). I was a little surprised but countered some of the assertions. At some point I might mention it's rather poor form to proselytize in an agnostic forum, but then I used to visit believers' sites and offer (respectfully) my $.02. If it gets to be too annoying, there's always the block feature.
