I used to know the sewage manager for not Widnes but Warrington. He told me that they used to empty the solids out of the sewage pit, steam sterilise it, pelletise it and sell it as garden manure. They made a little fortune, the local gardeners were winning all the prizes for the biggest cauliflowers and cabbages for miles around. Then someone from Burnley, Widnes or Ashton-under-Lyne let the cat or should that be poo out of the bag. What a scandal. It nearly matched the EEC catching Blackpool pouring raw sewage into the North Sea hoping to flood Morecambe on the incoming tide and depress their share of the tourist trade.
