I can only guess about the motives of black people that are members of Christian churches, but it's important to remember that black churches have historically functioned as much or more as institutions of mutual aid and organization for black communities than as religious centers. As far back as in slavery days, the black churches were the one situation where slaves could gather together in the absence of white people and in their church gatherings would often communicate with each other about news of the country, the Civil War, escape from slavery, etc. They would communicate in code much of the time because the slave owners would usually make sure the black preacher they brought in for services was loyal to the slave owners. NA beers are also for people like me who can't drink alcohol due to medical conditions or the meds we're taking, but still want to hang around friends who do drink at bars. Same thing for when we go to hear live music at bars or concert venues, or go to karaoke shows. We want to have an alternative to drinking soda pop or water. The former has too much sugar and gives us gas at our age. The latter doesn't make any money for the bar or venue and the wait staff hates how nobody tips for water. But it's amazing how many places I've gone to in my area that still don't sell any NA beers.

Not to sound callous, but the spikes in cases where I live really won't affect me unless they result in lockdowns of things like barbers, massage therapists and dentists from being open for business. I remain in my isolated state either way, rarely going out to shop, see my investment advisor or attend medical appointments. I hope I can continue to get a massage once a month and get a head shave every two months, but if I can't I'll get by. Just need to get my teeth cleaned next month without the dental offices being closed again for Covid and then I'll be ok on that until summer. By then Covid should no longer be an issue keeping dental offices closed or elective medical proceedures delayed.

After reading the article a second time, I would also say that religious fundies hate atheists for the same types of reasons, namely that we pose a cognitive dissonance threat to them that maybe everything they have ever been taught and believe is a lie. Also, they resent our thinking that we are or might be just as morally good and ethical as them, maybe more so. It bugs them that we might be just as deserving of heaven as them, if that existed and were solely based on works and morality. For that matter, economic conservatives hate leftists because we expose them as the selfish greedheads they are.

I would add that liberals who hate leftists pointing out how corrupt the Dem party is, esp. its leaders, are not so much upset to be told the system is not working for them. They are upset because the leftists truthfully and correctly point out that the system is not working for anyone who is living at less than the upper-middle class. The liberals usually are at that level on the economic ladder and don't like being told they might be sellouts or at best indifferent to the economic hardships and struggles of the lower classes than them. Hence, the inspiration for the old Phil Ochs song, mainly that the liberals feel like simply saying they are a liberal and that they support all the lower class and identity politics struggles out to be enough for them to feel righteously smug and comfortable that they are good people who are always on the right side, but sorry, to us socialists and progressives that's not enough. Being on the right side of the class war is by far the most important area in order to call yourself one of the good guys. You have to be willing to invest yourself in real equality by supporting a fair economy, which will never happen without socialist leaders and socialist policies. Neoliberalism won't ever cut it in bringing that about.

Time to vote for a third party, at least after this election, if not sooner. After this election, what do we really have to lose by giving a third party a chance, collectively, as voters? At the very least it could actually push the Dems to the left. At the best, it could eventually replace the Dem party for the 99% who are not racist, misogynist, or hung up on religion. It's clear that the Dem party is beyond reform and needs to be replaced.
