Most of the old tales are pretty vicious stuff. In grad school, my Reading prof read us one of the earliest versions of Little Red Riding Hood from the French around 1300. In that one, she gets naked and into bed with the wolf before realizing it isn't grandma. She escapes and runs home with some trickery. Once home, her parents condemn her and throw her out into the street as she has brought shame onto the family. The moral there was better dead than to shame one's family.

Anyway, I needed a course to finish my studies and asked him to do one with me. He smiled and I knew. My job was to, of course, read Ulysses and then write a quiz for each chapter which he could use when he taught it a semester later. It is a great read.

The smoking chimp reminded me of a story. Some years back, at a chimpanzee / ape/ monkey type rescue place the janitor got fired, temporarily only I think, after giving a dying chimp a cigarette.
