You can do all kinds of research but yet emphasize the wrong kind of analysis (in retrospect) and structure your decision making to favor those kinds of data results. Are the decisions irrational? Maybe your objectives are out of whack and you are looking at market share rather than profits, innovation rather than efficiency, proven tech rather than new areas of development. Luck plays a big role too, a shitty decision might pan out if your market changes, a good decision might go south if an earthquake or something screws up your supply chain. Now, deliberate short sightedness, like you describe, almost guarantees bad decisions, but product managers can fall in love with their product favorites and cut out the business analysts to the detriment of the enterprise too. American aspiration for greed is not new and it has always caused damage. The difference now is the scale. As oligarch fortunes have ballooned, so has their hunger for more. The up is down, black is white movement is straight out of George Orwell - hell, they probably used that as an instruction manual. Using fear and hatred to divide us is also not new, except for the scale enabled by social media and multiple billions available for propaganda, gaslighting, and widespread instigation. Toss in a completely corrupt government, top to bottom with a couple of token progressives, and well, welcome to the dystopian states of America.
