@nicknotes Actually, I was in Honolulu for a conference in 1992, and spent a couple of days on Maui afterwards. It was pretty and everything, but I was struck, as a NC resident, with how small the beaches were. And you're right, everything is reeeal expensive.

I don't think I've ever bought into the afterlife promise, but life is fascinating because we possess the capability to be fascinated by it. That might sound like a loop, but if you can take the time to publish the daily amazements internally, the experience becomes incredibly rich.

@Freedompath There are plenty of courageous people around, including in government both elected and professional. There are a lots more without courage, without even convictions or even awareness, and more without resources. They've studied this. Movements do not gain momentum until roughly 25 percent of the population sign on to active participation. The problem with this is that the opposition is not monolithic, and many factions undermine the efforts of the others. Single minded action from a committed population with strong, and courageous, leadership can effect all kinds of change. The reactionary forces are indeed single minded, and resort to propaganda and stupidity, both very hard to counter. Should those of us on this side of the fence give up? Of course not, but it is a long slog, and in the meantime the other side consolidates power by tilting the playing field using the reigns of power. The historical Hitler and our current version were both legitimately (or apparently legitimately) elected, and given the ability, changed the rules to remain entrenched while the opposition is scattered. I have no answer.

For a cold, 8 ounces of cheap Italian red wine heated to nearly boiling. Drink all at once, cover up and go to bed and sweat that shit out. For everyday crap, spark one up and let the world roll by. That's all I got.

Do atheists, who find no magic in the world, live drab, boring lives, by comparison?

@kasmian YMMV. Not usually a problem for me one way or the other.

Deadwood, no question.
zeuser replies on Sep 28, 2018:
@josh_is_exciting I've been hearing rumors about it. I sure hope this comes to pass. If Milch is writing and the original cast (the ones that are still alive of course) is back, this should be AWESOME.

Akfishlady comments on Sep 25, 2018:
Believe it or not I see the majority of the users are from North Carolina and Texas. I have seen lots from my area and other states but not as often as those.

Well, I'm in NC. We have a pretty big FFRF presence in the triangle area.
This is why we don't report.

Even when we do report, we still get treated like shit. This whole thing is so fucking upsetting to me. I can't even express how angry I am over this.

One of the many things I've learned from this asswipe is....there is a level of hatred in me which I've never recognized! Yes, like you....I simply can't bear to see/hear him. All I want from him is his immediate disappearance--and he can take Pence, Ryan, McConnell, et al with him!
zeuser replies on Sep 15, 2018:
@DenoPenno I may have to revive something I did with Reagan. I think I'll buy a nice bottle of champagne to be opened on the occasion of the talking yam's departure from the mortal realm.
Are you happy enough?
DenoPenno comments on Sep 15, 2018:
NO. I would be more happy if I woke up Sunday morning t find I had the winning lotto ticket. At that point I would immediately hire a professional financial planner who was experienced with this sort of thing.
zeuser replies on Sep 15, 2018:
It would change your life, but not necessarily all for the good. You find out who you can and can't trust when that much money is at stake, sometimes too late. Still, it's a fantasy a lot of people have. Good luck with that, DP.

People often talk about raising children with an open mind, letting them make their own decisions ...
Paracosm comments on Sep 9, 2018:
I disagree. That is the same logic that I've heard from every religious person I've ever known. We can teach people how to think not what to think. That is up to them.
zeuser replies on Sep 9, 2018:
I've used those same words, teaching my kids how to think and not what to think, many times in explaining to others how I approached the subject. My kids each went to services with their friends, my boy went to a Mormon temple, a Buddhist temple, a super church, and catholic mass. He liked the Buddhists - "The food was better." - but he and my daughter wound up solid atheist. My girl is a little more into the mystical part of eastern beliefs than I would prefer, but both are solid, and it was their decisions all the way - minus any indoctrination from me or their mother at all.
