brentan comments on Feb 15, 2019:
It's a question of balance between individuality and social consciousness. Individuality's good and bad sides were shown with the old pioneers and cowboy gangs. In the end, social consciousness won out. In today's world, I would call that social consciousness social democracy.

My guess is that cultural evolution is not always a good thing. Quite likely, genetic evolution has also had its backward and forward steps on the way to who we are today. I think we are placing all cultural value on utility and dismissing all the less tangible cultural values such as spirituality, metaphor, intuition and whatever else relates us to connection with the world around us. We call a lot of this connection to the intangible world art. Whatever we call this side of our lives, we better fight for it because as consumers living in a capitalist world, we are making ourselves nothing more than utilities too,

brentan comments on Feb 12, 2019:
That's a lovely, heart-felt poem from an Icelandic warrior who was Christian. I was particularly interested because I'm in the middle of reading Beowulf which is also a mix of Nordic hero and Christian sentiment. I found the lyrics and I'll paste them here. I'm not convinced that 'smith of the heavens' means God as the craftsman of creation. Listen, smith of the heavens, [to] what the poet asks. May softly come unto me, your mercy. So I call on thee, for you have created me. I am thy slave, you are my Lord. God, I call on thee to heal me. Remember me, mild one, Most we need thee. Drive out, O king of suns, generous and great, every human sorrow from the city of the heart. Watch over me, mild one, Most we need thee, truly every moment in the world of men. send us, son of the virgin, good causes, all aid is from thee, in my heart.

Gloucester (later to be the evil Richard III) waxes lyrical on his propensity for adaption: Why, I can smile, and murder whiles I smile, And cry 'Content' to that which grieves my heart, And wet my cheeks with artificial tears, And frame my face to all occasions. I'll drown more sailors than the mermaid shall; I'll slay more gazers than the basilisk; I'll play the orator as well as Nestor, Deceive more slily than Ulysses could, And, like a Sinon, take another Troy. I can add colours to the chameleon, Change shapes with Proteus for advantages, And set the murderous Machiavel to school.

What is consciousness? - Michael S. A. Graziano - YouTube
brentan comments on Feb 11, 2019:
Putting this information together with a book I've read recently called The Master and His Emissary, I would think that the left hemisphere is making the models from sensory input and determining the focus. The book suggests that after creating the response, the right hemisphere updates itself with the new information from the left side. Maybe this means that the right hemisphere does the thinking while the left hemisphere tells us what it is thinking. And 'what it is thinking' is consciousness. Here's a breakdown of the video as best I can understand it: PS damaged the right side of her brain Saw no difference in the two pictures of the houses Damage to the right-side of her brain left her unaware of everything on her left side The flames are on the left side of her vision so she doesn’t see them Nonetheless, her brain processes both fields of her vision Her brain can see the difference but she didn’t know it So she would duck from a ball that she didn’t see and wasn’t aware of So our brain process information that we may not actually experience Experience of the processing is called consciousness We are aware of an image in the same way we are aware of ourselves looking at an image It might be the brain’s imperfect picture of its own activity The brain processes sensory input and builds models from it The models are imperfect, just enough for the brain to create responses Seeing white light is a model because light is really lots of colours The brain is aware of the configure of our limbs but not extra unnecessary data The brain needs to make models of its own attention It needs to be able to focus attention and change it if necessary
