The mindfulness conspiracy | Life and style | The Guardian
brentan comments on Jun 14, 2019:
That reminds me of the poem where it says 'God grant me the courage to change the things I can change and accept the things I can't'. I guess there's a fear mindfulness is about accepting everything no matter whether we can change it or not.

WHO NEEDS GOD?
brentan comments on Jun 14, 2019:
I think rich people see God as the spiritual dimension of Maslow's self-actualisation. I'm told it came in with Protestantism and is now most obvious in the prosperity gospel. They must mean he brought it into relatively recent Western thinking because there must have been people like that since forever.

The cake makers have a conscience issue with dealing with homosexuality as if it were OK in their eyes. I think some gay people who have the chance to order from a baker who has no problem with it would rather try to force a Christian baker to go against their beliefs. This attitude is counter-productive for gay liberation because people can see the victims have now become the bullies.

brentan comments on Jun 12, 2019:
I wouldn't tell people there is no god. I just think there is no evidence. We could be wrong. A lot of people believe the universe itself is evidence of a god on the basis of the apostle Paul's verse about 'every house is built by someone', so they say this universe must have had a creator. I have a feeling that if and when we get to know the reality of our universe, we will look on past beliefs, both agnostic and religious, as very childish.

Islamophobia Refuted:: [youtube.com]
brentan comments on Jun 11, 2019:
I despair for the language. It's being turned inside out. Phobia of Islam means fear of Islam. The fear is that they will become a victim of Islam. Now the meaning of the word is changed to hate of Islam and the Muslims are the supposed victims. I think the Greek word for hate is something like 'apexthia' and it doesn't seem too much to ask that hatred of Islam be called Islamapexthia. I think the Muslims got the idea of twisting the concept of fear into hatred from the Jews but I'm not sure.

It's a mad idea that just might keep us sane.
As individuals, we store very little detailed information about the world in our heads.
brentan comments on Jun 11, 2019:
This is interesting. I would like to know where this idea came from. I would go further by saying that the collective mind is not even located in human brains but out there in the 'ether'. Rupert Sheldrake teaches that the individual's mind resides in morphic fields located on the super-natural plane. That would make collective consciousness the amalgamation of those fields. This is not to take away the processing power of the mind which he says draws our thoughts into the brain to real-ise them, something like a computer operating system drawing data into RAM to be worked on and then returned in its modified form to the morphic field. This harmonises in one way (processing) with Iain McGilchrist's teaching of how the left brain analyses data from the right brain, modifies the content and (ideally) returns the new data to the right brain.
Nothing...

I'm guessing that the morality condemning abortion came in early times from the importance of the survival of the group. So we'd call it a social responsibility these days if the survival of society was at stake. It isn't, of course, except in economic terms where not enough taxpayers are being created to pay for the needs of the elderly, social welfare and other public expenses. The problem in Europe is being solved by bringing in people delighted to work in more prosperous countries and still have the custom of raising large families. Everyone's a winner except perhaps those who never got to experience life.

At what point, if any, does a human being quit having the right to live?
brentan comments on Jun 9, 2019:
There's probably a difference between moral and legal in this respect. I can easily relate to the legal side of it on terms of 'a life is worth a life' but the moral side is probably more complicated. I understand that there was no difference in the Mosaic law but that changed very quickly to accept less 'equal' punishments for murder. Was this morality over law? It might be no coincidence that at the same time the Bible was being written, the Greeks were also modifying their tit-for-tit approach to murder by placing the law into the hands of the state instead of the murdered person's relatives. The result was the same: the number of deaths went down. Are these signs that the right to live often trumped basic justice?
Be nice to people? I don't understand.

Do Muslims Have Physical Rituals Like Catholics?
brentan comments on Jun 9, 2019:
Outward show is important. We would be publicly reprimanded if we didn't do the sign of the cross passing the church when I was a boy. In the 7th century, Muslims really needed to know who was on their side. Not much as changed as secularists today are all expected to make the same noises in public. The zealots demand it and the sheep obey.
