Just joined the site and wanted to say wassup. And, how many of my Texas heretics are here with me?
birdingnut comments on Feb 12, 2018:
Greetings! I'm not from Texas, but my dad was. Hope you find some TX peers here!
I'm going to be absent for a little while.
birdingnut comments on Feb 12, 2018:
Yikes! If you hate that job, maybe you can find a better place to work? But mostly, it's best to be emotionally independent from people. It's OK to interact with and love them, but giving anyone power over you is unwise. For instance, you wouldn't like it if someone were reacting to everything you said or did, feeling good or bad about themselves depending on what you said to them. You would want them to love themselves and be emotionally independent.
Any home wine or beer brewers out there?
birdingnut comments on Feb 12, 2018:
I haven't, but my daughter used to make her own beer, and it was very popular with her 20-something crowd. The first wine, or any alcoholic drink, I ever tasted was homemade berry wine made by the husband of an old friend. I was only 15 yrs old, and a missionary kid (MK) and he didn't think I'd drink it, but I did. It was so delicious I thought my taste buds would overdose, but had to pretend I didn't notice anything special. I was disappointed in store-bought wines I bought later as an adult - compared to that berry wine, they tasted like mouth wash.
What a drag it is getting old.
birdingnut comments on Feb 12, 2018:

birdingnut comments on Feb 12, 2018:
Yup.
Why won't you love me orange push-ups?
birdingnut comments on Feb 12, 2018:
That reminds me of the story of the businessman who was refused a ride by a taxi driver because he'd forgotten to get cash, and didn't have $20, and the taxi driver didn't want to trust him to mail it to him. The businessman had to hitchhike home, but on the return trip, he saw the same cab driver in line at the airport curb, waiting for customers. So, the businessman went up to each cabbie waiting in line and asked them to swap a ride for a BJ. They all refused indignantly. Then he went to the cabbie who'd refused him a ride before, showed him $20, and told him the address where he wanted to go. But as his cab slowly moved past the row of waiting cabs to leave, the businessman gave each of the waiting cab drivers a big grin and flashed a "thumbs up" sign as they passed.
So stumbled upon this site.
birdingnut comments on Feb 12, 2018:
I quit attending church when church members began shunning and persecuting me for being a divorcee, while accepting my ex and his new lover. Then I stopped believing in Christianity after reading the Sumerian texts, and seeing how the Bible writers copied it 2000 years later. But what turned me hostile to "white evangelicals" in particular was that 85% of them voted for Trump, and during the 2016 election my childhood Christian friends flooded my Facebook pages with hate memes against minorities. My anger has moderated now, and I'm back to "live and let live" when it comes to religion.

I could say my 5' 3" height, except that I love being short..gives me more horse, and dance partner choices! I could say my slight weight, except that I like being slim/skinny. I guess I would have to say my teeth, except I don't worry about it as long as I can chew.
What excercise routines are people doing right now?
birdingnut comments on Feb 11, 2018:
I use my "gallopers" to zip up and down the long hallway of my apartment building three times, which replaces all my stretches, lifting, etc., makes my abs hard as rock, makes me limber, builds muscles on neck and back, etc. I do eight pull-ups in the room, from a broom handle jammed under a ledge on top of my wardrobe. I take the elevator to the ground floor and walk up to my fifth floor. Or just try to remember to skip the elevator once a day. I walk five blocks to the store to buy fresh produce, since I have no refrigerator. I walk to the store to buy crushed ice to chill my evening boiled egg. I walk anywhere I need to go, or take a songtheaw, after walking to the main road to catch one. I take early morning walks to photograph birds, lugging a Canon EOS 7d /400mm lens.

birdingnut comments on Feb 11, 2018:
I found the NLP (neuro linguistic programming) technique (used for vets with ptsd) works well for me. I take a few minutes to replay bad memories, but I imagine the events happening as they should have happened. For instance, I imagined my marriage being the way I'd hoped, imagining it all the way through to death, with us happy and working together. Afterward, the anger and resentment were gone, replaced by emotions from the imaginary memory..as though I really had a good marriage. I "knew" what had really happened, but the emotional element was gone.
I've made level 7( wipes tears froms eye).

Finally watching Wonder Woman.
birdingnut comments on Feb 11, 2018:
I agree. I couldn't understand why all those women were claiming the movie was uplifting to women..it was nothing but Amazon women warriors dressed like porn stars. Leather, boots, exposed thighs and busts, leaps into the air while spinning with crotches toward the camera (gross!), long, curly, loose hair for warriors (yeah, right), and in the end, it turns out Wonder Woman's success wasn't from her training, or womanly strengths..turns out she was a god - could blast other gods dead, and fly. Right. That's an attainable goal for our little girls to aspire to.
Why can't I stop worring about everything
birdingnut comments on Feb 11, 2018:
The left hemisphere of the brain is the side that worries..also it's the side with female traits, so it's a female trait. Most males don't worry about much, unless they have a lot of female traits, then they can become fussy and worriers. To get in your right hemisphere, do things only the right side can do..do art, play music, go for a walk outside, ride a bike, play with your dog, do things you love to do, etc. People say CBD oil will calm the mind, and is legal most places, since it's the part of cannabis without THC.
Have any of you read the book "WHAT THE BLEEP DO WE KNOW!?
birdingnut comments on Feb 11, 2018:
I like his books and think his premise is true, but some say they can't replicate the results, so the experiments aren't valid. Dunno, but it seems to be that way in real life, because of supposed double blind experiments where lab rats are randomly selected and after handlers are told those certain rats are super smart, those rats suddenly excelled in maze tests.

Isnt it sad that it only takes one unfair person to wreck a relationship?
birdingnut comments on Feb 11, 2018:
NO. It takes two to wreck a relationship, even if the reason is that someone should have noticed the red flags and left before it started. As for advice of "elders," since people are not alike, there are many reasons why some people keep choosing unstable partners, and an older relative's advice to "stay together, love and forgive," is likely useless, and could get someone killed.
Is everyone feeling sad about not having a romantic partner on Valentines Day?
birdingnut comments on Feb 11, 2018:
NO. If I were with someone I'd do what I do to celebrate anyway..go birding, and eat some Thai food.
Tips for dealing with anxiety?
birdingnut comments on Feb 11, 2018:
Edibles might be better at helping with anxiety, plus a few drops of iodine in water can also calm people and reduce or eliminate any cannabis paranoia or hallucinations. Cannabis oil is very strong and must be taken with care. Taking 5-htp, magnesium, and derris scandens capsules might help, or St. John's Wort. People also swear by CBD oil to make one feel calm. It's a cannabis derivative, lacking HTP, so legal in most places.
Funeral without religion?
birdingnut comments on Feb 11, 2018:
I dunno. I don't even believe in funerals. Why not do cremation, turn the ashes into jewelry, etc., then throw a party to celebrate the person's life? Even better, have the party before the person dies, if the end is near and they feel up to it.
How important is it to the average athiest or agnostic to debunk religious beliefs?
birdingnut comments on Feb 11, 2018:
Exactly. I live and let live, as long as others let me do the same.
Legalize it?
birdingnut comments on Feb 11, 2018:

Seeing this picture solidified my doubts about the christian religion.
birdingnut comments on Feb 11, 2018:
The Robert Browning quote in Pippa Passes: "God is in His heaven and all is right with the world" only applies to people who have comfortable lives. The illogical reasoning of religious teachings is so extreme that religious people must "check their brains at the church door" to sit through a sermon. People are told that God controls everything, so why condemn people for anything, since God made them do it? Why go to work? Why take your kids to the doctor since it would go against "God's will."
And this is why women live longer than men... - The Meta Picture
birdingnut comments on Feb 11, 2018:
Sadly, with my partial transmale nature, most of my life, I've been that way-although luckily I'm still 40% female-minded, so sometimes my female side can put a stop to it. When I think back at the stuff I've done, I know I'm lucky to be alive.

I agree with your own named beliefs- I.e. about rejecting the Hebrew god idea, yet not being able to disprove other types of gods, etc., and stand by my self-definition as "agnostic."
Agnostic Spiritual and/or Religious People?
birdingnut comments on Feb 11, 2018:
Not sure. I put "spiritual" because even though I no longer believe in the Bible or the Hebrew God, I still believe Einstein, that all matter is a form of energy and that it is all connected, so of course things happen that seem supernatural..but have nothing to do with "God," unless you agree with what Jesus allegedly said..that we are all gods.
Anyone make any close connections yet?
birdingnut comments on Feb 11, 2018:
So far, no close connections, just general chit chat, while I suss out if I'm a good fit here. I match some views, but have many others that clash with beliefs of many here. I don't know exactly what I believe, but I read it all, and certainly don't believe the government's official line..I'm more in line with the Netflix (youtube) documentary "Unacknowledged," about government cover ups, showing videos or presidents, NSA agents, astronauts, etc, talking about it, admitting it. Also, doubtless offensive to some, I often watch alleged secret government whistle blowers, reading books like The Ascension Mysteries, by David Wilcock, Intervention Theory Essentials, by Lloyd Pye, True Real Life Stories of Reincarnation, by Richard Bullivant, watching Simon Parkes online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agFLGg3YXx4

Here is a bird photographed in north American bird, a Sanderling, Caladesi Island, FL
I am a photographer.
birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
Who uses film any more? If you do manage to get a photo of a distant bird, it will be tiny on the film, need to be blown up, enhanced, developed, etc, at great expense and time for just ONE picture. Sort of like keeping a horse and carriage in case cars go out of style.
Can a homosexual attraction occur in a person who defines themselves as heterosexual?
birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
It seems like the US is obsessed with labels. Since I arrived in Thailand, many/most Europeans and Thai are so androgynous that sometimes it's difficult to tell which gender they are, and many seem to be bi. Yet women with buzz haircuts I've met who only dress in men's clothing, don't seem to think they are a LGBTQ category and have no labels. But, according to a Harvard study, ALL homophobic hetero males showed arousal when shown gay porn, although tolerant cis hetero men didn't. Another study showed sexual arousal in all women for all genders, when shown sexual pictures. Their speculation was that women being able to become aroused by anyone probably helped protect them from tissue damage, since most women have been routinely raped by stronger people, even women masters, for all of human history, which is why women were married off by their families..for rape protection. In a gender orientation survey a few years ago that guaranteed complete anonymity, 85% of people admitted to experiencing same sex attraction in various percentages, I.e., 60% opposite sex attraction/40% same sex attraction. They saw themselves as being on a "spectrum."
Marriage
birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
Dunno. It's an advantage for tax purposes and inheritance, and provides status for women..people are less willing to mess with you when they know a husband exists somewhere who might take offense. It also gives one full rights to visit partners in the hospital, add them to your insurance, and keeps relatives from giving you separate bedrooms when you visit them. But marriages are an annoyance to unravel if things go south, so I advised my kids that if they ever consider marriage..keep considering and skip it. Sleep together, live together, anything but marriage, and make sure to use birth control also. Thanks to my advice (maybe), or because they're also androgyne, as I am, neither of them have married.
I attended a funeral recently.
birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
That's always the case. The closer people are to a position, the more they seem to disagree. For instance, I was surprised by seeing a Paso Fino horse going past during a parade, since I'd never seen one in the US. I tried to both compliment the rider, and show off my horse knowledge by remarking to her as they went past, "Nice Paso Fino!" To my shock, she whirled on me in haughty fury.."It's a PERUVIAN PASO!" Since her horse was doing a highly collected gait, almost stepping in place in the slow parade, its distinctive fast, winging gait wasn't apparent to me, and I hadn't even cared about the slight gait difference before. But it also reminded me that writers are more critical of writers in their same genre, etc.. it's a universal trait. I've read that most people save their most picky criticism for people they feel are similar to them. For instance, the snarky fashion police pick on celebrities, yet never snipe at remote Russian peasant clothing choices, etc.
Anybody out there as disgusted by this president as me?
birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
I can't help but think it's showbiz. Two years ago I read an article about how Trump called a meeting of top corporate leaders several years ago, and told them that he knew how to cheaply run for president and win through manipulation of the press, using free publicity. He said he knew just how to push buttons to get free news coverage, and keep media attention. But the alleged secret government whistle-blowers say that Trump and Bernie were the only ones running for election who aren't being controlled by the "Cabal," (aka the Illuminati, Deep State, the Oligarchy, etc.) and that even though Trump is part of a Draco faction known for being ruthless, amoral, and misogynistic, he is one of the "Allies" who are pushing for full disclosure of secret government files hoarding highly advanced technology they hoard for their personal use, put keep secret from the public. They say his wealth is what keeps him safe from blackmail and bribery to do the will of the New World Order, who they say controlled the Clintons and Obama. They say that Trump is going after the wealthy pedophiles first since they keep trying to have him killed, mentioning three different assassination attempts. Dunno. I don't trust the government and they certainly do suppress cancer cures and other beneficial things that would make their companies lose money. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agFLGg3YXx4
Living alone

birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
LOL! In the mid 1970s, I had a Border Collie mix, Benji, while living in a Louivsille, KY, apartment, who sometimes seemed blase about our great inventions. We lived on the fourth floor, and I would take Benji to the big dirt and weeds parking lot back of the building to relieve herself, but apparently she soon decided she could do it on her own. She began getting out of the apartment, then a few minutes later be back, tapping at the front door to be let in. The mystery of where she went was solved when someone mentioned that he saw my dog take the elevator to the ground floor, trot around the back to do her business, then ride the elevator back up. I asked how she reached the elevator buttons and the guy laughed and said that everyone knows where she lives, so someone always pushes the right floor buttons for her.
Do you like hosting parties?
birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
Wow. Seriously? You should consider offering your party planning services to the non-hosters. You could probably charge what you wish. Shoot, some people make businesses of taking down and putting up holiday decorations for people. I socialize by walking out the door of my apartment. I am surrounded by kind, polite Thai people, and am friends with vendors, building staff, neighbors, etc and we fall into step together even when I'm out walking, to catch up. When working, I laugh and talk with Thai teachers and joke around with the Thai students. But to socialize in English, I have to go online!
What is your favourite thing to do on the weekend when it is pouring down with rain outside?
birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
I'm always up for Thai food. In fact, that's what I have for breakfast every day. Wait. I live in Thailand, so no wonder! During rainy season, I lay my stuff out on the bed, then go read a Kindle book, watch a Netflix series, do the exercises I do inside anyway, such as racing up and down the long hall on my (new invention) gallopers, doing pull-ups, taking the elevator to the ground floor, then walking up the stairs. When I hear the pouring rain and booming wind waning, I quickly grab my umbrella and ease out the door. The storm has to be over, though, since during the monsoon rains, rain doesn't fall straight down, but fills the air from all directions, and the high wind gusts make umbrellas useless. When I commuted to work on my motorbike during rainy season I wore a Frogg rain suit.
The struggle is so real. So, so real.
birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
Yup... Usually, after I accept an invitation to meet people to do something, I spend the rest of the time trying to think of an excuse to get out of it, or hoping they cancel. Unless they're my peeps! Or they invited me to see a rare bird LOL! That reminds me..I routinely, almost reflexively, find excuses to turn down dates and discourage suitors, but in Thailand, where many/most Thai are bi, some people have me figured out. My young, beautiful (married, with teen kids-Thai don't show their age..at ALL) boss/owner of a Thai ESL franchise when I lived in Nakhon, Thailand, kept beaming at me, running into doorways when I walked by, suggesting we get together for coffee to "discuss work," but I'd just say I don't drink coffee. But she was much better at courting than any man..she simply started telling me that she knew where certain rare Hornbills were nesting, on the far side of the Thai isthmus, near Krabi, and mentioned that she was free that Monday since the school would be closed for a holiday, so would I like to go? WOULD I??!! She had me at "nesting hornbills." We spent a day hiking a beautiful nature reserve, seeing rare blue pools deep in the jungle, etc, walking for hours, laughing and talking, and she bought me lunch, and fresh Thai fruit along the way, from local vendors. She never made a "move" on me, though..I can be a bit intimidating, so maybe that's why. I noticed that when she ordered lunch for us when we were at the edge of the park, although still in the jungle, she used the male pronoun, "kop" for her reflexive pronoun, although she usually used "kah," the female pronoun. If you are hetero male or female bi, you can go ahead and be jealous-she was beautiful, slim, had a doctorate, etc. I'd learned the hard way to stay carefully neutral in Thailand to avoid women getting crushes on me, then taking revenge on me when I don't properly reciprocate. That happened several times in a row, until I was afraid to talk to people.
Searching for a slim intelligent, open minded woman.

birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
They did that same experiment in an Asbury College freshman class, except that I'd grown up in Haiti, where we sometimes dove under furniture when we heard machine gun fire in the valley below to escape stray bullets. So, as soon as some guy rushed into the room and knocked down the teacher, then pulled out a gun, I'd already dropped to the floor and out the door. I heard gunshots as I left, but nobody was running or screaming. Then I realized that the gunshots sounded hollow, so were blanks. After a ten minute wait, I returned to the class to find everyone writing up their version of the "crime" and later people kept teasing me for leaving. "You were SCARED..I SAW you leave! Ha, ha!" But all I did is wonder how everyone could just sit there passively. But with all the mass shootings later on, most people have started planning ahead how to react in a crisis.
I would like to change to another multiverse, I am fed up with this one! check please!
birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
According to alleged secret government whistle blowers Simon Parkes, Corey Goode, and David Wilcock, among others (seen on YouTube, have websites), the earth is moving into a high energy part of the universe now and people who are at least 50% kind and happy will automatically bump up to a higher dimension (parallel Bible teaching = the "Rapture") ) Those whose vibrations aren't high enough stay in the third dimension level and continue on a sub-optimal timeline.
Has anyone else suffered night terrors?
birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
I had that happen sometimes in Haiti, where voodoo was the religion. I was terrified until I discovered that all I had to do was ignore it, and they disappeared. But I don't know if that case was the same as yours. Later, when I started menopause I began to get panic attacks at night, so learned to take hormone balancing herbs and eat fish for relief. I suppose it was the mix of gender hormones clashing in my body that caused it, since panic attacks seem to be a frequent problem with creative, high IQ types, who, in turn, are often androgyne..mixed gender.

How do you feel about the way the American government disregarded every treaty ever made with Native...
birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
Just the European diseases wiped out millions. The Native American tribes waged constant war on each other, but it was for horses, status, hunting ground access, to acquire children to adopt to replace ones that were killed, etc. The Native Americans were unable to grasp the concept of genocide, ownership of land, that someone would promote the destruction of trees, wildlife, pollution of rivers, etc., so made treaties with white men to acquire guns, metal weapons and tools, and, they thought, help with subduing their enemies. The US government killed many of my distant relatives outright in the Trail of Tears, treaty violations, etc, since I have Native American on both sides of my family, three and six generations back. I still look Cherokee enough to be regularly invited to pow-wows.
Where were you when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated?
birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
I was on noon break at our tiny elementary mission school in Haiti. When we were told the news, I was in shock. I couldn't grasp it. Since we didn't have TVs in those days, our mission showed the funeral on a big screen at the front of the big mission church. I was puzzled as to why the Americans, who had cars, would have all this ceremony stuff with horses and boots pointed backward, etc. Even back then I could see that Jackie Kennedy resembled me, so always felt sympathetic toward her, and my resemblance only increased with age, until people began asking for my autograph as a Jackie look-alike when I later worked as a movie extra in two movies.

I like many aspects of Buddhism, and love to meditate, but only in my own way. For instance, when doing group meditations in temples with my friends or students, I don't follow the monk's chants, but let my energy mingle with everyone and everything. I love the glittering Buddhist temples, the kind, accepting people, etc.

Nudists?
birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
I'm with Robert A. Heinlein on many things..including nudism. I grew up in Haiti in the 1950-60s, where kids don't wear pants until puberty, and most rural people typically had one set of clothes, so on wash days, while their clothes were drying on rocks by the river, adults strolled around naked, without even noticing it. Near our mission, most people wore some sort of clothing, but even a few hundred yards off the main road, where I often rode my horse, on wash days, I'd have to stop and exchange endless greeting rituals with naked adults: Haitian: What are you doing? Me: I'm riding my horse (Since I was sitting on my horse at the time, this was obvious, but still the custom to ask) Haitian: Oooooh! (as though this news was a revelation) How's your mom? Me: fine Haitian: Your dad? Me: Fine. So it went..Your brothers? Your sisters? Your horse? etc. Then I had to do it with them as well, politely inquiring about their relatives, pigs, chickens, etc.. Naturally, making it past Haitians with any kind of timeliness was tricky. My ex and I always ran around naked at home and I also let my kids do the same until they got old enough to start jumping into the closet when we walked in on them dressing. Then, out of solidarity, we started dressing in their presence, reverted to naked when they were absent. I taught my strict ex how to skinny dip in remote ponds and rivers, and we did that every day during the summer, as did the kids. I consider clothes a means to protect my skin when climbing trees and cliffs, or horseback riding.
What is the most outrageous or out-of-character thing you have done to get or keep a love interest?
birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
I once went along with my MK (missionary kid) childhood college friend/boyfriend when he and another longtime Haiti MK friend started shooting rifles at a can floating far out on the lake, during a picnic on the shore. I don't like guns, had never shot one before, and thought they were too noisy, but when the two boys kept missing the can, they thought they would show me how difficult it was by handing me the gun and daring me to try. Being a partial transmale, although I didn't know about gender issues then, I naturally accepted the dare. Taking the rifle, I first did a test shot to see how "off" the sights were. Seeing it shot to the left, I simply adjusted to the right and blasted the can into the air. I then handed the rifle back to the guys and a long silence followed. Then the other guy said, "Let's eat!" and they never mentioned shooting again. Fine by me. Of course, women usually have much better small muscle control than men, but they didn't know that.
Do your socks match? Always?
birdingnut comments on Feb 10, 2018:
What are socks? Here in Thailand, where people commonly remove shoes at the door, I wear slip-on sandals. But back when I wore socks, I tried to buy many pairs of the same color and style to make matching them easier.
I believe this is politics.

I've always been ready for automatic driving. Can't wait to program where I want to go, sit back and read a book, or take a nap. The challenge would be to make the self-driving cars unhackable, although, technically, most modern cars can already be sabotaged by the government if they want to get rid of a witness.

Never know until you try! I was becoming increasingly annoyed with forum alt-right attacks when a college prof. colleague gave me the link to this website, so have only recently joined. It's probably not a large enough group to be very useful as a dating site, but some people have found their special one through interacting with others in intelligent conversation.

birdingnut comments on Feb 9, 2018:
Intelligent conversation, avoiding alt-right attacks, possibly finding friends and maybe even a future partner, although finding a match might be..problematic, due to my unconventional hobbies and interests, and the fact that I am unlikely to want to move, plug into someone else's life, replace someone's ex, or join anyone in living for food and loafing.
Am I still single because my face is that hideous?
birdingnut comments on Feb 9, 2018:
Studies show that all people, even babies a couple of months old, stare longer at, and show attraction to, faces with even features. That means a face that is more "average" than others, better known as "beautiful." They found that genetic diversity is what causes the even features, thus the attraction to someone genetically diverse is an evolutionary advantage. They even found that people in the work place who have at least one beautiful colleague are much happier and more productive than those in offices with unattractive people. Furthermore, attractive people get more promotions, are shown more favor, etc, and can usually get by in life with less effort than most. So, evolution is stacked in favor of women with even features, and bodies that signal fertility..an hourglass figure with slim waist, full breasts, and curved hips since most cis males want the best female to reproduce them. But there are plenty of LGBTQ people who don't fit that trope, and also imperfect/unattractive people who are also looking for love. Are you willing to date these types of people?
I'm going out on a limb here, and some of you may think I fell out the tree bumped my head.

I have, and that theory has supposedly been disproven, at least by what we currently understand. One debunker figured out that no computer could be powerful enough to simulate the entire universe and all the possibilities. But he also admitted that our computer knowledge is probably primitive. Another debunker argued that it was impossible because the creators of the simulation would then have to be "other" than our universe, and the same question would then apply to them. Other people have other arguments: Physicists Confirm That We're Not Living In a Computer Simulation http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/next/?p=18950

birdingnut comments on Feb 9, 2018:
Here in Thailand most people use the video chat feature on Facebook messenger instead of phones. It's free and instant, and you don't have to do "Skype searches" or remember passwords. That's all I use now, and my (non-smartphone) phone stays turned off, only used for emergencies, and using my Galaxy Note tablet or laptop to Facebook message or call people. I use Skype for teaching online ESL classes, though.

Criminalizing Sunday School would only swing government oppression in the opposite direction, although that would likely be the best for the child.
What makes people read.
birdingnut comments on Feb 9, 2018:
My parents read to us every night. We were on a remote mission in Haiti, so my mom taught my two older brothers with the advanced CA Calvert correspondence course. I was only four, but bugged my mom to let me learn also. Unfortunately, she tried to force me to memorize words by their shapes-as was being done in the public schools, and kept yelling at me and trying to shame me when I didn't get it. Finally one day I saw a beautiful, illustrated story about an Indian maiden in my oldest brother's reading book and decided I'd had enough. I went to my mom with the alphabet and calmly asked her to tell the phonetic sounds of all the letters. She stared at me for a short time, perhaps considering whether or not to mock me, but suddenly decided to do what I asked. Afterward, I returned to read the book, and never stopped reading since. My kids did the same thing..bringing the alphabet to me when they were still almost toddlers, and quietly insisting I teach them the phonetic sounds. By then, I'd purchased a Sing, Spell, Read and Write course to use when the kids were old enough for school, so I used the phonics songs, and both started reading. My daughter learned to read before she turned three, and within a couple of months she was reading 20 page books, and soon was taking her turn, along with her brother, reading aloud from books I read the kids at night, such as the "Little House on the Prairie" series, and the kids were bringing home 200 library books every two weeks.
Relationships with believers
birdingnut comments on Feb 9, 2018:
Dunno. I didn't completely dump religion until the Trump election, when childhood missionary kid (MK) friends flooded my Facebook page with hate memes against minorities. My ex is a Christian, but during our marriage I chipped away most of his taboos, even showed him how to drink wine, routinely go skinny dipping in isolated ponds and rivers, watch racy movies, introduced him to the fun of mild B & M (he LOVED it), showed him how to use vulgar language, etc. He was very religious before, but I corrupted him. I've been in Thailand since 2010, and haven't felt motivated enough to pursue a romance, being demisexual.
I finally broke down and asked someone out.

Sounds like you're on the right track. I just stumbled across the new Queer Eye for the Straight Guy on Netflix. Last night they did a wardrobe, house, yard, personal grooming, and cooking skills makeover for a redneck man who'd done nothing with his life since divorce many years before, and his house was a dump. Afterward, with their encouragement, he gathered his courage and called his ex wife, who'd stayed in touch with him over the years-and with whom he admitted he was still in love, and she accepted his invitation to a home cooked meal.
I'm a big fan of stand up comedy.

Both Louis CK and Aziz Ansari are still on Netflix, despite sexual misconduct/assualt accusations, and are still hilarious, although some of their humor can be dark, even borderline sexual predator at times. Perhaps they recorded the comedy specials before the accusations.

Aaaw! It's sweet they are still trying to make you seem OK to their "God," despite your apparent heresy. I had a similar disbelieving reaction here in Thailand before I could speak Thai, since foreigners are rare in the places I taught. Students just couldn't comprehend that an adult human couldn't "speak." If I said I didn't understand them, they'd look shocked, then repeat the question in a different way, or talk more loudly, or slowly, unable to grasp the concept that because I had NO IDEA what they were saying in Thai, those measures wouldn't help.

To a point. If you are killed while still a baby, nothing you could do to improve your life. If you were born into an extreme poverty situation, deformed, sickly, blind, etc. your options for life improvement could be limited. But for most people, that's often true.

Yeah..and they're NO GOOD at marriage counseling either. No matter what, the solution is for the wife to be more obedient and to "love and forgive" her abusive and/or cheating husband. It's all about passive submission to the will of men, sweeping things under the rug, victim blaming. After one church counseling visit, where my husband blamed me for everything, denying anything he'd done, I never went back. Instead, I divorced him. Best idea yet.
Any people here recovering from extreme christian fundamentalism?
birdingnut comments on Feb 9, 2018:
I was in Pentecostal churches and saw many supernatural things. But I didn't necessarily associate such things with Christianity, since vodoo people in Haiti could do the same things, and my mom, my sister-and later my kids-and I were born psychic and could do all that Bible stuff naturally, without religion being involved. So could the Native American Indians, and their white captives, if they were with the Indians over six months before being returned. Einstein showed that matter is just a form of energy. Since energy can't be created or destroyed, then we have always existed, and will always exist in some energy form. We contribute to creating our own reality, so are usually limited by our own beliefs. "For us believing physicists, the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion." -Einstein “I regard consciousness as fundamental, and matter as derivative from consciousness." – Max Planck, theoretical physicist who originated quantum theory, 1918 Nobel Prize in Physics

If someone is dying and a bystander chooses not to help, should they be held responsible?
birdingnut comments on Feb 9, 2018:
Well, Seinfeld and his gang were arrested mocking a robbery victim and doing nothing. Just kidding. It's not illegal to do nothing, but others will likely judge you if you do nothing. When I was growing up my tiny younger sister rescued several people in front of everyone, while we all stood there. Once, she suddenly snatched a toddler out of the road as a speeding car roared past. I hadn't even noticed the baby. Another time, a baby fell off the end of a church pew in front of us, and she caught it before it hit the floor. When she put the baby back, the mother turned around, saw her settling the baby back on the seat, and gave my sister a dirty look. A college guy was showing off how long he could hold his breath under water at a swimming pool and passed out, started drowning. None of us understood what was happening, but she dove in and began hauling his head out of the water, calling for us to help her. As for saving someone who's drowning out in deep water, that's best left to experts, or extend a boat paddle, long branch, or throw a flotation device to them.

Question for former believers
birdingnut comments on Feb 9, 2018:
YES. When I finally read the Sumerian texts, written 2000 years before the Bible, and saw that the Bible was just a derivative of those texts, I felt profound relief. No more trying to justify, or turn a blind eye to the bloodthirsty, revengeful ways of the Hebrew god of the Bible. That God archetype was apparently based on the bloodthirsty Sumerian alien leader, "Anu," who required human sacrifice, since that race ate human flesh. I also liked the thought of being genetically engineered by aliens rather than the Bible version of magical creation..far more cool and "sci-fi." And more scientific, true or not. Why did god creat all the cosmos?
birdingnut comments on Feb 8, 2018:
It's simple. Air is for soccer balls, cows are for hamburgers, dogs are to protect human property. Humans are the reason for everything that exists, and our personal God said so. I keep hearing religious people asking aloud why "God" would "create" birds that humans don't eat. Or speculating that God must have created some animal for an yet unknown purpose, to help people, naming rare plants in the Amazon that can cure cancer as a reason to not clear cut all the forests. I have to grit my teeth, realizing they can't understand that.
