Part of the reason blacks and all peoples of color is gerrymandering. Areas that are predominantly non white are structured in such a way that there are physical obstacles to voting, like the polling place is miles and miles away, or the hours are very limited. There has been a concentrated effort in the US since the beginning to keep power in the hands of rich white men.

@RavenCT I used to read bodice rippers. OMG, the author of this book mentions "The Flame and The Flower", one of the first bodice rippers. I remember reading it in HS and my dad asking if I should be reading that!! My GRANDMOTHER told him it was OK! LOL! Its only been in the last 5 years or so that I got into less fiction and more substantial stuff. I now belong to a book club through my Humanist group. I will recommend this book the next time we have to make a new list of books to read. Everyone gets to add two books to the list, and generally we read non fiction. I still read erotica/romances/bodice rippers from time to time, and other fiction. I also started reading Terry Pratchett on the recommendation of some site members. I can't wait to really retire and have a chance to pare down my reading list. Yeah right, that sucker just keeps growing.

I tend to eat vegetarian/vegan and there seems to be no middle ground so I don't discuss it until I know someone better. Truly, I learned how to fold fitted sheets years and years ago, it always surprises me that people cannot fold them. Honestly, sometimes the sheets don't get folded before they're put back on the bed, they might stay in the basket, or elsewhere, depends on how motivated I get. When I do fold the sheets, they are folded neatly and tucked away. The fitted sheet is in the middle, topped with the pillow cases, and the flat sheet surrounds them all, one nice neat package.

@Cutiebeauty I have always had cats, and I had a dog when my kids were growing up. He was the son I never gave birth to, and the best brother my girls ever had. Dogs are great for kids, my middle kid told the dog all her secrets. I so wish I could have had a recorder planted on him, it would have saved me a few weeks of sleuthing.

@Robecology No fighting, just discussion. No reason to go on the defensive. I realize you want best for @Cutiebeauty, as do I. I have two grandbabies that live with cats, and one with a dog as well. The only "right" position in this discussion is what Cutiebeauty decides. That is the joy of being the parent. Peace.

AlbertSchepis comments on May 17, 2019:
I'm not fond of them, but I can't kill them anymore unless they pose a threat to me or my cats. I'll always try moving them first. More often than not I've seen my cats just eat them. I just don't want them to get bitten.

@Robecology Cats are low maintenance. I always had a cat when my kids were growing up. Dogs are higher maintenance, having a puppy is like having a toddler with very sharp teeth and claws. I got a golden puppy when my kids were 4,7, and 11. It was like having another destructive baby in the house. He was death on flipflops.

He crossed a picket line to pick up a donation from a corporate donor.... Think about that for a bit. He crossed a f*cking picket line... Talk about nailing the door shut. No, he doesn't care about the common man, he is sucking up to CORPORATE DONORS. Nope, no Joe. There is some other history with Joe that as a woman I don't like, and I don't think Joe has what it takes to bring the nomination in. He's also too old and too straight and too white. And he's run before and lost. He is what we're trying to grow away from.

HippieChick58 replies on May 11, 2019:
@Petter I have to agree with @altschmerz. To me, given the political situation in the US that there was not any humor in those costumes. Those teachers were supporting a wall aimed at keeping people of color out of the US. IF that was political satire it is NOT appropriate in a classroom setting. In private they can be as racist as they want, but in the classroom they need to be open and supportive of everyone. And even in private, if I found out one of my kids' teachers held racist views I'd be keeping a close eye on that classroom.
Principal, teachers suspended for posing with noose in leaked school photo
Petter comments on May 11, 2019:
Unfortunately, too many people are unable to see humour, prefering to see racism, etc. instead. Then social media amplifies it, in a quest to gather "likes", often to boost income. Why, for instance, bring racial lynching into it? Hanging was a universal punishment, irrespective of race.
HippieChick58 replies on May 11, 2019:
US history has too many instances of crowd justice aimed at people of color, thus the noose has become a symbol of white power to people of color. In the US it is seen as a racist hate symbol.

He was living in a spare room in his former Mother In Law's home. The upside is his kids were welcome to visit, the down side was she really didn't like or respect him. So he was in a sucky situation, and I was not willing to participate in that kind of rodeo.
