I have cats. The tricks are making mama run when she hears a crash from another room. And feeding them before she feeds herself. And the best trick of all, making Mama wad up cash register receipts into little balls which we will play with for hours and then shred for her to pick up.

Of course her attention span is very minimal :) She also picked up a glass marble off carpet and carried it to laminate floors, I think she liked the noise it made, or it rolled better. So in a nutshell I'm dealing with people who've had a close encounter with the health care field and now I have to tell them what they need to do to get about 60% of their basic weekly income. Can you live on 60% of your paycheck? I went into the office today to catch up a bit. It is very quiet on the weekend and I wrote two denial letters. :(

@resserts I totally get that. I need a consistent sleep schedule as well, which means I need to turn the damn computer off, but I'd rather spend time here (whine). I also need to get my workload under control. I took a few days off at the busiest time of the year, what was I thinking? We're swamped, and I've got people upset with me. My boss is cool, but still putting a bit of pressure on, which isn't helping my sleep. I can retire in two years, I'm not sure if I can hang on for two more years.

@silvereyes I loved Japan for many reasons. During the Korean war my uncle was in the Navy and was sent to Japan. He brought home a wife and I thought she was the most fascinating person ever. So I was familiar with many Japanese ideas and foods. I thought it was cool to be in a place where I was tall! I love the food. I loved the unfamiliarity of it. I turned 19 while I was there, I was still very young. I saw a bull fight, but it was two water buffalo "fighting". I experienced Typhoons. I experienced my first earthquake. Looking back I can't believe I was so young and so innocent!

I like to travel using Google Earth I love being able to go down on street view. It's just like you've been there. Sometimes when I have to go someplace new I will use Google Earth street view first when you actually go to the place is like you've been there before.

It's not there anymore. Some of the places I used to live have been significantly changed. Some are very much the same. It is fun to travel on Google maps, and doesn't cost a damn thing.

@MrLink I used cloth diapers sometimes with my kids, but washed them myself. The reason I didn't use them full time - their dad. He couldn't stand getting dealing with messy diapers. He was OK with just throwing it away. For me, I save by rarely buying toilet paper, and never needing to remember to put it on the shopping list. I've never done the math, I'm not sure I could do the math, but I'm pretty sure my initial outlay of cash for the supplies has been recovered, and I'm not killing trees. I wanted to reduce my carbon footprint, and I think that helped. Do I expect others to do it, not so much.

What do you think people used before toilet paper, and do you want to take a guess at how many trees die every year so we can wipe? You can buy cloth wipes on Amazon or other web sites. I made mine about 8 years ago. I buy TP once a year or less to supply the guest bath. And then there is the cat who thinks the TP on the roll is good fun, so I have used more than usual this year.

In the US the default value seems to be (or was) Christian. If you weren't Jewish, or Muslim, or someone non white non European you were automatically Christian. For someone your grandfather's age I'm guessing that is his mindset.

I kid you not, I knew a gal at work whose last name was Butts and she married a guy with last name of Outhouse. To this day it’s hard to imagine that there was actually a Butts/Outhouse wedding. She left work shortly after they were married. I hope she didn’t hyphenate the name.

I speak a handful of words in Spanish, Japanese, French, and German. I used to be able to speak a good deal more German and Spanish, but use it or lose it. I swear in German from time to time. And then there are days where I'm not sure I'm still in command of my English. If I were to learn another ...

@EllenDale Ya know, I have no idea. I just know which language is needed. When I was cursing in German I was in a slide on ice, didn't realize what I'd been saying til I stopped. I'm told small children that grow up with more than one language have no trouble keeping the languages separate. My cousins grew up bilingual with Japanese and used to talk to their mom with dad nearby speaking in Japanese so dad couldn't understand.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
