HippieChick58 replies on Jun 19, 2019:
Ask and you shall receive... sometimes... (Franziska Barczyk/for The Washington Post) By Joyce Cohen June 17 at 12:00 PM It was supposed to be a joyful family gathering. Last spring, Kim Powers-Brown took an overnight train from her home in eastern Washington state to join her relatives at a restaurant near Seattle. Because of her hearing difficulties — she cannot understand speech amid background noise — the group of four requested a quieter spot. “The waitress said no, that side of the restaurant was closed and she was the only waitress on duty — it would be too much trouble,” Powers-Brown said. The family was led to a corner table, with a speaker playing music overhead. She couldn’t understand a word. Her brother demanded they sit in the quieter closed section. “I begged him not to embarrass me,” said Powers-Brown, who was born partially deaf and wears a hearing aid in one ear. [Why I will start including accessibility information in my restaurant reviews] “I apologized twice, but we were still treated rudely,” she said. “It was very uncomfortable. I felt terrible that our get-together meal was such a disaster because of my needs.” Under Title III of the Americans With Disabilities Act, restaurants — as places of public accommodation — must accommodate disabilities. But what if the disability is a hearing impairment, and the request is for a lower volume? On this issue, the law has largely remained silent. Hard-of-hearing diners report a vast range of responses when they seek softer music or quieter seating. Sometimes the music is turned down or off, and sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes it is even turned up. Maybe the volume is declared unchangeable, set by corporate overseers. Or there’s no available seating far from the clattering kitchen, the droning ventilation, the hearty partyers. Powers-Brown, 60, who is earning a library degree, rarely dines out with anyone but her husband. She never even thought to request quiet. “I was brought up to adjust to others,” she said. Instead of struggling to converse over a meal, she reads. The law, though, requires “full and equal enjoyment in places of public accommodation,” said Daniel Fink, a retired Los Angeles doctor and a noise activist. His paper on the disability-rights aspects of ambient noise was presented at a recent meeting of the Acoustical Society of America. “I can guarantee that people with hearing impairments don’t fully enjoy noisy restaurants,” he said. Pisco y Nazca in the District, where dining-room noise levels last fall measured 95 decibels, or about as loud as a power mower. (Deb Lindsey/for The Washington Post) Restaurants these days are louder than ever, to the point where critics (led by The Post’s Tom Sietsema) check volume ...

So, I am also reading a book right now called An American Sickness How Healthcare Became Big Business and How You Can Take It Back by Rosenthal, Elisabeth I so want to recommend this book to about half of my callers, however I am sure I would be fired so fast there would still be a breeze next week. However, I can recommend it to you. I actually bought a tablet so I can keep the titles of my books private, I read some pretty subversive and rather anti christian stuff, and I'm just not ready to advertise in that office that I'm that far out of the common mold. My supervisor and her boss both wear crosses. I feel your pain, my dear. No one has that type of money. Yes, you can ask for an estimate before you ever have a procedure. Well at least *Forbes* didn't put itself on the list, and I don't trust the WSJ. They may present facts, but they don't necessarily do so without bias.
HippieChick58 replies on Jun 10, 2019:
I used to read WSJ, my ex Father in Law subscribed for his son, my now ex-husband. I am the sort if it is in print and in my house I will likely read it. So I read it. There were some really good articles that I still remember. Soooo several years post divorce, I picked up a WSJ in a waiting room. Either I've gone way far to the left (very possible) or they have veered strongly to the right, I thought they were far more right leaning than they were years ago. I didn't care to wade through the junk to get to anything I'd be interested in.

Try English language news from countries where English is not the main language. Al Jazeera RT English papers in India, China, Thailand......wherever. You get differing perspectives and realise how biased Western media is at times. Venezuela a recent classic example. BBC? Bahahaha

@Ms_McSteven I am so sorry you're not having a great time here. I hope I haven't done anything to make you feel "common" or anything like that. One of the things I like about this site is the broad range of responses. Yes, I prefer books to TV, I'm odd that way and I admit it. I may get more responses because I've been here for so long, and I'm a very active user. Or it just may be the time of day things are posted. I don't know. I probably spend far too many hours here, but it is my therapy and my online home. I did not create my post to criticize you. I saw an interesting (to me) article and I posted it. I am fascinated by the responses. I have found many like minded folks on this site, and I think you will too. Please don't give up. And please don't take any responses personally. Printed word is hard to read emotions behind. If it doesn't sit well ask for clarity, we have some sarcastic people who are hard to read, a bit of clarity can work wonders. I appreciate your presence, and I appreciate that you're outlook is different from mine.
