My job. It is a tough job, and I am dealing with people who are stressed/hurt. I work in Short Term Disability claims. The case load is high, and I'm just not fast or efficient enough to keep up. So many variables. So much that can go wrong. Some of the stuff wakes me up at night. I wake up reading medical records, or trying to make phone calls. Then the current news scene doesn't help, but compounded with my job, it is overwhelming. We have a fairly large turn over in staff because it is a tough job. I can see the stress on my coworkers faces. Some folks can handle it, some not so much.

@Deveno I live in the middle of a conservative backwater and I'm atheist to boot. I've done so many dating sites/services/processes, I've lost count. I am convinced a potential partner is not in my area, and I am not willing to relocate. The only way I can find a partner in my area is to have a lobotomy, and I'm not wiling to do that either. There is no dating up, down, or sideways in this equation. I will likely live alone until I have to move in with one of my kids, which is not good cuz then I'd end up seeing their dad much more often. Hopefully by then I will be senile and won't notice.

This made me think of my childhood kitty. She was so sweet and so accepting. My sister dressed her up in baby clothes. This is Cocoa. She was my first heart cat, and the most gentle cat we ever had. When a small child picked her up, she'd go limp. And when that child put her down, she'd head for the...

@RobertNappi2 Her name was Cocoa, she "followed" my brother home from work one evening. She had a close encounter with a car at one point, and after that I was pretty much her human of choice. She would sit on the stairs at 9 pm and meow at me if I wasn't going to bed. My folks thought it was hysterical. She was Siamese, don't know if she was purebred or not. Didn't matter, she was all cat.

@brentan I want scientists to be critical thinks and analytical. I don't see a believer being a critical thinker. To be a believer of things you don't see and cannot prove tells me you have WILLINGLY turned off the critical thinking skills. Well, if I can't figure it out with science I will say god did it and no one can ever disprove it and I can keep my job. This is the not scientist I want working for me.

@MikeInBatonRouge That is awesome!! I have the same areas, parking strip areas that I could plant the clover in. My front yard faces south. Part of the parking strip area is bounded on 4 sides: sidewalk, driveway, street, and cement pad for the community mail box. It is about 3x4. I have long considered putting some sort of ground cover there.

@SKH78 I am sorry you have had that experience. I think babies should only be brought into the world by people who WANT to be parents and made a deliberate well thought out choice to have a baby. My middle daughter is the world's greatest Auntie, but doesn't want children of her own. I support her decision 101%. She would be an awesome mom, but I respect her choice too much to ever seriously try to influence her decision. Babies are challenging little beings, and hugely expensive and time consuming.

I have dealt with depression since I was in my 20s. At one time in my late 30s or 40s I went on meds. I told my then husband and father of my children what was going on. He told me he didn't want to hear about it because it made him depressed. Only part of the reason he is the ex now.
HippieChick58 replies on Aug 4, 2018:
@MarkusCB That was the first time in a long time the depression had lasted long enough to be concerned. His dad was famous for telling his mom to "just get over it." She dealt with depression for many, many years, in fact most of her life. My ex was an Army officer, we met and married while we were both stationed in Germany. This is why I can give the dates and where we lived. It was after he retired from Ft. Lewis. Depression waxes and wanes.
Some say there is no mental illness.
HippieChick58 comments on Aug 4, 2018:
Anyone who says there is no mental illness is full of BS. It isn't weakness, a failing or a fault. It is an illness just as the flu is an illness, just as cancer is.
HippieChick58 replies on Aug 4, 2018:
@Beelzebant I don't think you can blame it all on parenting. In fact I don't think you can really blame parenting. It is an illness, the brain chemistry is out of whack. They have done twin studies of children who have grown in good homes and not so good homes. Mental illness knows no demographics. Sometimes it is resiliency. Possibly it is genetics. It doesn't matter why, it matters that the individual has an illness and needs to be treated with dignity and respect.
