Forewarned is Forearmed? (No pun intended) [thebulletin.org]
glennlab comments on Aug 16, 2021:
When the last person that remembers the last great war has passed, the next great war is inevitable. While millions still remember the two wartime detonations, many no longer remember the devastation of those two very small weapons.
glennlab replies on Aug 16, 2021:
@racocn8 There were at least 4 groups trying to develop an atomic weapon during WW II, US,GB and Canada, USSR, Germany, and Japan. We were first past the post. We did not know the status of the Japanese effort, but we did know that they had access to the German research. There have been many revisionist that have stated that Japan was about to surrender, I wholeheartedly doubt that since only the emperor had that authority and it took the two detonations to convince him to surrender. The Japanese high command have stated that had they developed the bomb first, they would have used it. To answer your second question first, if I were Truman I would have3 done exactly what he did, since extending the war would have allowed both the Soviets and Japanese the chance to complete their weapons and neither of them would have wasted any time in delivering the weapons. Having seen the effects of nuclear devices, I hope that they are never used again, but we can't get that genie back in the bottle. The world needed to see the devastation that these devices could exact on targets. Both of the targets chosen were military targets that would have been devastated by conventional bombing had they not been one of the several pre-selected targets. In fact we killed more people the previous week in Tokyo with firebombs than either atomic target city. Japan had attacked the US in a cowardly surprise attack. They were losing, but the cost in terms of men and material on both sides was rising as we got closer to the main island. It is estimated by war planners that a final assault on the main island would cost nearly 1 million allied lives with double or triple that by the Japanese. So yes, I reluctantly think that they should have been used. I do not believe that they should be used in the future, except in retaliation
Expected that

viruses have existed for billions of years, we were not able to identify them specificly until the 20th century, but were able to identify the diseases caused by them for hundreds of years. Just like we were able to know that cancer was a cause of death long before we could identify which type of cancer. Just because we didn't know exactly what it was didin't mean that we couldn't find ways to combat it.

@Killtheskyfairy DNA on it's surface if just exposed to air and normal tempature changes would degrade quickly. The ancient DNA discoveries we have been able to tickle out came from frozen samples in an oxygen poor enviroment. Conditions would have been far from ideal, churches are buit for air flow, but their shape concentrates the heat in its upper levels, where this carving is. I wish we could, but with today's science, it is just not possible yet. https://slate.com/technology/2013/02/dna-testing-richard-iii-how-long-does-dna-last.html

For the first 3 thousand years, it was read or recited to the sheeple, they left out all the parts that were contradictory. At least at the same sitting.

@Lizard_of_Ahaz Abrahamn was generally belive to be born in 2150 BCE, the oral histories proceeded from that point forward. It is generally believed that the written torah was not written before the 6th centery BCE, but it was based on previous oral and writen texts. The oldest complete version of the torah is from 1000 CE. Fragments have been found, but from earlier versions as early as the 7th century BCE.

Nearly half a century, but who's counting, then 2 more centuries before any of the texts were evaluated for consistency
glennlab replies on Aug 3, 2021:
People forget or never realized that reading and writing were highly prized professions. Work was beneath the wealthy so few of them could read and even fewer could write. Scribes were very valuable members of the ruling factions and it was not in their interest to pass on their talents to others outside their circle. This continued for centuries until the printing press was developed in 1440.
Incredible.......

I am deeply disturbed by the IOC's outrageous sexism.
glennlab replies on Aug 3, 2021:
@Lizard_of_Ahaz It is not the IOC that makes the dress rules, it is the individual sports' federations. Athletes have long fought to have actual athletes on the governing bodies to change the archaic rules and be more athlete frendly.

Beautiful Flowers. The starts you gave me are growing but no flowers yet.
glennlab replies on Aug 3, 2021:
They love the heat, so you should start seeing buds showing soon. this past winter was rough on mine and I didn't see my first blooms on the purple until late May (a month+half past when they normally bloom) and the blue until mid July (about 4 months after normal). With yours just a year post transplant, it could be a bloomless summer, but I hope not.

JackPedigo comments on Aug 3, 2021:
Fennel is very common here and I have several in my garden. The connection with the Swallowtail is something I did not know about. Wonder if birds go after the caterpillars?
glennlab replies on Aug 3, 2021:
The two that I see most often here are the tiger and colossal. I think the reason they like the fennel and coriander is that the birds feel the same as I do about the taste especially concentrated.

Fernapple comments on Aug 3, 2021:
I love fennel for its own sake as well, it is not just a great herb but looks so attractive too. I don't know why more people don't grow it, though the fact that there are the two forms both the root vegetable and the leaf herb can cause confusion.
glennlab replies on Aug 3, 2021:
@Fernapple Since I'm not a fan of the flavor, I buy my seeds at the asian market, I get about 70 % to sprout and only pay $3 a pound instead of $3 for 1/8 of an ounce. I buy my cilantro the same way for a simalar price difference. I don't eat it either, but the swallowtails like it too. You really have to check on what the local butterflies like. I have adjusted my plantings so that I have a good mix for several varieties.

I don't particularly like the the licorice flavor, so it is just for the butterflies, it is both a host and nectar source for the swallowtails.

I'm fond of fire agate myself, but I've gotten some petrified wood. I once got a nice cab of petrified palm. In cleaning out my garage, I came across a fairly nice vase made of ivory. I'm not attached to it, but I'm not sure how to get rid of it. Can ivory be sold? Or, where to donate it?
glennlab replies on Aug 3, 2021:
I now that some pre embargo ivory can be sold, you have to check it out before you offer it to anyone. https://www.fws.gov/international/travel-and-trade/ivory-ban-questions-and-answers.html

When you invite friends over, do you invite people that generally have similar stands or do you invite people that will be so opinionated that they come to blows. When you go out, do you go out to a place where everyone disagrees with you, or do you go to one where most people generally hold the same beliefs. Most people tend to socialize with those that have similar beliefs and that they can learn from. It is called a comfort zone for a reason.
