Yes, the US is generally #1 in neglect of the most vulnerable of our citizens. If you aren't wealthy, white, or male the government doesn't care about you unless it is to regulate you and make it harder to live.

The Texas Republican anti-abortion laws are to control women.
HippieChick58 comments on Sep 3, 2021:
I agree, Republican men are terrified of becoming and being treated the way they are treating minorities and women. When I first read "The Handmaid's Tale" it freaked me out. My calming device was to remind myself that I was one of "the frozen chosen," and it couldn't really happen anyway. Just fiction, I told myself. OMG...... Now I'm no longer among the chosen, the blinders have been removed from my eyes. I am of the belief now that Republicans are just plain evil beasts. Yes, It is damned expensive to raise a child, and women with privilege have access to abortion and birth control. Their babies won't be turned into cannon fodder. Women of color and poor women are needed to breed those future boots on the ground no matter what it costs to bring them up. I don't see this ending well.
It's not just USA that gets flooded cities.
HippieChick58 comments on Sep 3, 2021:
Floods are all over the earth and we are likely to see more as the ice caps melt and oceans rise. One of the good things about being in the middle of the US is I'm likely to have ocean front property if things don't calm down soon.

HippieChick58 comments on Sep 2, 2021:
Not only that, but per HCR: Last night at midnight, a new law went into effect in Texas. House Bill 1927 permits people to carry handguns without a permit, unless they have been convicted of a felony or domestic violence. This measure was not popular in the state. Fifty-nine percent of Texans—including law enforcement officers—opposed it. But 56% of Republicans supported it. “I don’t know what it’s a solution to,” James McLaughlin, executive director of the Texas Police Chiefs Association, said to Heidi Pérez-Moreno of the Texas Tribune when Republican governor Greg Abbott signed the bill in mid-August. “I don’t know what the problem was to start with.” At this moment I am pretty sure I will never set foot in Texas again, and also fairly certain I will not do business with companies based in Texas. It seems unfair to some of those companies, but I am in no position to influence the government in Texas, but they are. I am pretty sure they will not notice my lack of support for their business, and I have no idea what the political leanings of these companies are, but I vote with my pocketbook whenever I can and I'm not sending another of my hard earned dimes into Texas if I can possibly avoid it. The motto of the Dept. of Roads of Texas is "Don't Mess With Texas", to which I reply Texas is doing such a darn good job of making a mess all by itself. It is now a good state to be from, as far from as possible.

After a COVID skeptic falls to the disease, people ask an awkward question: Should we care?
HippieChick58 comments on Sep 1, 2021:
These past 20 or more years the ideological differences between them and us have grown. We are both so convinced that our way is right, it is the only way to be, we can no longer regard the other side dispassionately and listen for the truth of their belief. Understand that the us and the them are shifting groups of individuals who either agree with us our disagree. There is no rational discourse, it is all heated rhetoric. IF you change your mind/learn more/evolve your base groups scorns you and you may lose your identity before you are ready to. People really get dug in to being afraid of change, of education, of evolving. It is quite irrational. And that is why there are people dying of covid who have refused to be vaccinated. Our last less than illustrious president didn't do a damn thing towards reconciliation or breaking down barriers. He was all for more rigid barriers, and this is the price the nation is paying for that horrible decision. I am/was a true bleeding heart compassionate liberal. But my well of compassion has dried up and my give a damn got up and went. My mind screams let the suckers die, they brought it on themselves. My mouth and fingers try to make it less scathing than that, but really... Karma is a bitch and she is working overtime. Yes, I have a dearth of compassion, and I worry for me and for the rest of the world. This isn't going in the right direction, but I'm too tired to do more than notice it is going to hell.
Was thinking back to the beginning. Things have evolved and things have changed. Crazy.

I don't remember the exact number of times I've been corresponding with some male from a dating site and we've scheduled a meeting, and I get ghosted. It isn't exclusive to gender. It is a shitty way of doing business and a waste of my time, which is why I dropped out of dating sites. The last dude that ghosted me had told me where he works and I was able to find his work site. He told me who he worked for, and I had his picture from the site. He sells insurance, it was an easy find. I mailed a handwritten note, no return address to his office address and essentially told him he was a POS, and not to f--- with former WACs who have mad internet sleuthing skills. Online dating sucks, which is why I stopped. I don't have time for that BS. If I meet someone it will be local, so it will have to be work, REASON, or Omaha Humanists. With the new surge of Covid and WFH I'm not likely to meet anyone anytime soon, and I'm OK with that.

For me one of the deal breakers is a TV in the bedroom. I have had a TV in the bedroom a few times, but it never got watched. I dated a guy who slept with the TV on. I cannot do that. I have a fan and white noise on, but never TV. I have a 2 TVs in my house, one has not been turned on in years, it is in the basement family room. The other is in the LR, but it is a small house. I don't have cable, I do have Roku and usually watch Netflix or Amazon. My TV is on less than 2 hours a day, and likely less than that. I grew up with TV in the living room and my dad watching TV every evening and sports on the weekends. I hate sports on TV. I am not put on this world to "make" anyone happy. I am content, and I make quilts. So far this year I have read 30 books. Might be more, sometimes I forget to add them to Goodreads. I once dated a guy who had not read a book since HS. He was over 50. That and his family drama made that a short relationship.

Jan 2019. Quilt for 2 year old granddaughter, just learning her colors. Her mama wanted it to be a rainbow quilt.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
