What's not allowed on your TV or radio, on this SUNday morning?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 18, 2018:
During the christmas season my usual radio station switched to all chrismas music format before Thanksgiving. So I switched radio stations to a Boomer station. And lo and behold there came a church service into my home. I wrote to the station and let them know why I was leaving, and got this polite but nonsensical reply. Eh, don't matter to me. I haven't switched back to my former station yet. The radio is continually on in my house and car. It goes off while in the car if I have passengers. If I'm riding with others I just want the radio low enough that we can talk over it.

HippieChick58 comments on Mar 18, 2018:
I want more than just sex, and as you point out if I want sex I have my toys. I want companionship, intellectual stimulation, good conversation, and someone who cares for me. Did you know a hug will release endorphins including oxytocin, the bonding hormone? I don't think an orgasm with my vibe is going to do that.
Open relationships
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 18, 2018:
My first instinct is to say "oh hell no" but it is really more complicated that that. It depends on so many other circumstances. I would say I'd consider any variation, but it all depends on too many other factors to make a blanket statement.
I just realized I only have my best friend...literally 💔
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 18, 2018:
Not everyone has a bunch of friends, however you can broaden your social circle. Check Meetup.com. You my find people who share your interests that way. Take some classes. Get involved politically. I made some friends through a Humanist organization in my area that I found through Meetup.com I tend to be an introvert. I have a few friends, my kids (who are all older than you are), several coworkers who I chat with, and.... and.... and.... this group!! But for face to face contact, I got my nails done today and picked up lunch at a drive through and did some shopping. Wow, what an exciting day!

Ladies I have question for you. What do you think about facial hair?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 17, 2018:
I like well groomed, and I like natural, quick and easy. Personally I don't understand shaving the head, but if it makes you happy go for it. I think sexy comes from within, a man who is comfortable with himself and interested in me is likely to have a sexy vibe to me. I like beards if they are soft, the brillo pad feel is tough to get close to. The duck dynasty style I don't get, it think it is taking creative anachronism to an extreme. If your hair is long but you have a huge bald spot I think the long hair just looks sad. But again, what makes you feel good. Now if a guy sports a mullet I don't think I'm even going to get close enough to talk to him. Everyone I've ever known with a mullet has not been someone I wanted to associate with.
What are your thoughts on psychological disabilities?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 16, 2018:
that is such a huge, multifaceted subject. I work in disability claims and maybe 15 to 20% of our claims are mental health related. One thing I hear over, and over, and over again is that it is so darn hard to get an appointment with a qualified mental health specialist. And now I'm wondering if the % of claims denied is higher for MH claims becasue it is so hard to get appropriate treatment.

When did you realize you were old?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 16, 2018:
I remember listening to "Lunchtime with the oldies" on the radio while I was at Ft. Meade, Maryland. I was in my early 20s, and they played a song that I loved in high school. I was pissed about that for days! And that was the first time I realized it was really all downhill from there. My middle daughter freaks out about wrinkles and turning 30! I told her "really? Every wrinkle and grey hair I have has your name on it" I may be old, but I don't care! I'm OK with it. My mom died at 45, she never got to meet her grandchildren or see any of her kids get married or any of that other cool "getting old" stuff. Your age is just a reflection of the number of trips around the sun your have made. Don't let your age define you. I may be 60 and my knees make some odd noises and yes I have a few gray hairs but dammit, I put the time in for it. I earned it! I am happy about it because so many don't get that opportunity. JMHO ( or not so H)
A follow up: What makes you a terrible partner?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 16, 2018:
I've never asked why someone wanted to break up with me, things just didn't work out. One guy decided he'd rather live close to his grandson than stay in Nebraska, and I get that. One guy decided his stuff was too important to him and he couldn't afford to move it. I haven't had a relationship move very far forward in years. As for the faults I know I have, I'm bossy, go figure right. I like my alone time. I tend to identify the elephant in the room. I sometimes cogitate on issues. I have immense patience until I want it NOW! And I think I snore, but I'm not sure, the cats don't complain.

In my opinion, the only reason that people fear death is the religious hellfire and damnation myth.
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 16, 2018:
Nahhhhhh. Think of a teenaged boy, all hopped up on testosterone and still building synapses. Given that young males have a much higher rate of accidents than the rest of the population, they have limited fear of death because they lack experience and the testosterone and deficiencies of synapses. But fear of death is what keeps most of us from doing crazy things like experimenting to see how high we can go on a rickey ladder or other dumb stuff. If I didn't have a healthy fear of pain and disfugurement I'd drive a hell of a lot faster than I do now. Well, tickets, but I haven't had one in a few years. (note to self, slow down in West Point, NE, The cop in that town doesn't have enough to do.) I'm not afraid of death, I do fear pain and suffering so I try to maintain homeostasis. The other fear people have is unfinished business. Becauase I learned early that life is fragile (mom died at age 45) I try not to have unfinished business. I tell my kids frequently that I love them and how happy they make me. I have forgiven who I need to forgive and if I shuffle off this mortal coil tonight I'm OK with that. And if I'm not online tomorrow by noon someone call my kids that the cats might need to be fed.

Where do you get most of your reading in?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 15, 2018:
I try to read every night before I go to sleep. I'm in bed, book propped. My last book was "Jefferson's Daughters" a biography of the white and mixed race daughters of Thomas Jefferson. I also read online many times a day, I read several blogs. And then I read license plates and bumper stickers. I used to read cereal boxes. If it is print and in front of me I will read it.
Have you ever tried meditation?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 15, 2018:
Yes, I've done and I do meditate. Not as regularly as I should. I recommend the book 10% Happier by Dan Harris. Also when I'm alone, especially in the car not moving in traffic I will do a yoga "om" and I can actually feel my heart rate slow down and is calming. When I do it at home it freaks my cats out which is amusing.

I'm sorry for your loss, and from the point of view of the church that is the perfect time to spread their message, they have a captive audience. First it is a worship service, and second it is a funeral. I've actually heard that discussed at church. Weddings were the same way. Churches are in the business of keeping business coming in.
Non-Religious Church?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 14, 2018:
Yes, sort of. Unitarian churches, or Unitarian Universalist churches are out there. I heard the officiant say it was a "church for people who've been hurt by churches" which appealed to me. They had a service led by Wiccan's which amused me. There are satanic temples which aren't really churches as much as anti Christian gatherings.

I am sometimes too smart for my own good, but I always have great conversations with good input. I like to be comfy I like to keep my partner comfy too. HippieChick58 comments on Mar 13, 2018:
A few qestions first, and I ask this because I am a mom and likely old enough to be your grandmother. Tell us about your mom? Is she super faithful or a CE christian (CE=Christmas/Easter, goes to church only on "holy days') And if a christian what denomination? Is she pretty laid back or is she a helicopter? Are you financially dependent upon her? How has she reacted to other challenges in the past? Is their a friend or relative you can bounce this off of before you talk to mom, get their perspective on how mom will react? What is the very worst case scenario that can happen? Are you close to your mom? Does it NEED to be now, or can it wait until you're out of HS and college and on your own? I was close to my kids and they told me lots, but I'm a laid back kind of mom anyway. Their dad they didn't tell so much cuz he's pretty tightly wound. If you think this is going to rock the boat in any way, approach with caution. And good luck.

I think you made the correct choice in not having children. Children should only be born to those who want to be parents. And children are expensive, messy, disruptive, and a crap ton of work. Not everyone is cut out to deal with it, and I love your honesty. Now the hysterectomy is another story. You did not mention how extensive or which way it will be done, which is of course your perogative. Having had C-sections and working in disability claims, don't be surprised if it doesn't kick you onto your butt for a few days. Even the less invasive procedures are like having a blender in your guts. There are some huge hormonal changes that can happen not to mention it is abdominal surgery. Just listen to your body and take a few days of pampering. And good luck!! I do hope you sail through.

HippieChick58 comments on Mar 12, 2018:
I had a kind of epiphany this weekend that I truly am going to be alone for a long time if not forever. I mean I've talked about it, and knew it was likely, but this weekend it seems to have really taken hold. It's not even worth trying to find someone. The last few connections I made on other dating sites have been scammers. The one real guy that I had a real date doesn't want anything besides a couple hours of Netflix a week. That isn't a relationship. Yeah, I'm a nice person but not the one. So, just me and the kitty girls. I'm sad, I tear up easily, and in the long run I'm going to be OK. I'm starting to bounce back now. And I will come back from this stronger than I was before. One of the things that makes me good at my job (or parts of my job) is that I can draw on my experience. I spoke with a woman today who just got an awful diagnosis, and told her "you don't know how strong you are until the only option is to be strong." So my friends, be strong. We will get through this.

HippieChick58 comments on Mar 11, 2018:

I think the relationship between spouses needs to be above all other relatioinships. If you don't put your spouse first you are on the way out, IMHO. I had a disagreement with my former BIL. He is a bully and decided I wasn't pulling my weight. At the time the ex was in Korea, I was essentially a single parent of 3 small girls, the youngest a nursing infant. But when I asked the inlaws for help I was weak and needy. They replied "that's the way he is" and blew me off. The ex when he heard of it only said "he wasn't there, he couldn't judge." That is only part of the reaons he's now an ex.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
