Do you give to beggars?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 24, 2018:
So driving around Omaha today there is a guy on a corner with a sign. They cannot step into traffic so I drove extra so I could hand him a bag. He REFUSED it! I don't know what he thought I was trying to give him, I don't think he was fully cognizant. He kinda rambled and there was lots of car noise. But he refused my bag, I even put an extra $5 in it becase it was such a crappy day. He had odd old shoes and odd pant, not jeans. I was hurt, but I realize it may be a symptom of whatever disease he has. To say that social service will take care of these people I say "cracks." There will always be some folks that fall in the cracks. There are some too ill to deal with the system. Have you ever been to a shelter? Sometimes they are scary places, and frequently families are separated. Many people are just a paycheck away from being homeless. I do not, cannot, and will not judge. I will help when I can, but sometimes you just can't help. When the mental hospital were closed it forced thousands of mentally ill onto the streets. More are on the streets every day. The dearth of mental health care in the US is attrocious. I work in short term disability claims. I talk to people frequently who have to wait weeks if not months for appointments with counselors/therapists. They can't work, and I can't pay them unless they are receiving appropriate treatment. There are few things scarier in the US than being poor, because the system is set up to keep your poor. If you throw mental health issues into that mix it is a nightmare. When I lived near McChord AFB I frequently used to see panhandlers near I5. One of the things I notice is patterns and shapes. Soon I realized the sign that was being held today was the same sign as a different guy had yesterday, some of the letters had unique shapes. I was not and still am not sure what to make of that. Was it a panhandling ring? That was 20+ years ago. Sad that we haven't fixed our problems homelessness and poverty in that time.

Best Dating Site?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 24, 2018:
I had to restart my profile on one of the sites, I couldn't remember my log in and somehow got locked out. I was contacted by a guy who doesn't have a picture, his profile says he is divorced. But it also says he is a storm chaser and works between Lincoln and Omaha. I knew who it was, talked to him for a bit. I reminded him we've met in person twice before and he gave me a small dreidel last time we met. Nope, he is not divorced. I hate liars! Funny thing is, I know his real name because of his storm chaser activities, and because of that I know where he lives. Makes me wanna write to his wife. But hell, this has been going on for years.
I am so tired, I think I am suffering a bit of burn out.
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 24, 2018:
Just remember that tough times don't last but tough people do. I know it sounds trite, but it is true. I've been there. You'll get through. We all need to vent from time to time, I know I do. Just remember, it will get better. It is Ok to feel discouraged. Pamper yourself a bit. And wait. And vent some more. We're strong women, we're survivors.

Best Dating Site?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 24, 2018:
I've tried most dating sites at one time or another, except Tinder and Bumble. I've even tried some not on the list. What I encounter most often is scammers. This past week I was asked twice for money by people I've never met in person. A few months ago I had been corresponding with one person who wanted me to go buy and Apple laptop and watch and ship them to him. I told him he needed to provide collateral and proof of identity. I was bored, I let it play out too long. I still have some dating sites active, but I don't think anything will ever come of it.

HippieChick58 comments on Mar 23, 2018:
I keep ziploc bags in my car. Each bag has a pair of sox, several individually wrapped personal wipes, a mylar blanket, and $5.00. I give them out whenever I see someone with a sign along the road where it is safe for me to hand it out. I've gone around the block to hand it out. Why? Because I don't judge and because I can. I also have a stack of $5s in my car to hand out as needed. I might make a difference, I might not. But I tried.

Nope, I gave that up a few years ago. If I "need" to consume it I will swallow without tasting. I read a few years ago that 4 oz of a certain type of red wine every night at bedtime could regulate your blood sugars. I drank about 2.5 bottles before I turned the last bottle into beef burgundy. I don't like most red wines, and that type is one of them. I even added splenda to it. I'll deal with full blown diabetes before I drink that wine again. I did try hard to make it work, and decided then life is just too short.

HippieChick58 comments on Mar 23, 2018:
The important thing is that you proved god isn't real. There was no bolt of lightning that struck you dead when you read scripture. It's like reading any other literature, no more, no less. Well, maybe less because scripture is kinda stilted. What is next is what YOU make of it. Its up to you. I just turned 60, trust me, you're at the beginning of your life. Make good choices, make choices that reflect your truth, what you want to be. Do the math, average life expectancy in the US for a female is about 90, you have lived a fraction of your life so far. Go create an awesome life.

Is it bad that I can cook?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 22, 2018:
I think men should be able to cook, any guy that can't I wonder about how he was raised. Cooking can be fun, definitely creative and a basic life skill. That being said, living alone, I cook only because I want to eat healthy and I'm too cheap to eat out very often. Cooking for one is boring.

I avoid soy based products like tofu, too much soy will trigger hot flashes due to the phytoestrogens that soy contains.

I was up close enough for my taste with Westboro Baptist a few times when I lived in Kansas. The founder of that sect was a scary dude, very messed up. The church is largely the family. How sick to drag your children along to your protests holding signs that God hates Fags with a nice graphic. I had to explain to a 11 year old what that was. While her older sister's gay friend was in the car with us laughing hysterically. Westboro Baptist is a pimple on the already fetid ass of evangelical christianity.

So, assuming the fans are pretty much divided half and half, is god ignoring the prayers half of the fans, and what made him give preference to the winning team. Is the winning team more righteous? Or does god just not exist and we're all out here on our own and actually have to practice and work for our stuff.
What was something that pushed you towards doubting your religion?
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 19, 2018:
Part of the reason I liked the church was the community. Being in a military family, the chapel community was my social life. I was never a PTA mom, and being a stay at home mom and overseas, I needed support. Back in the US I always went for the liberal churches, Methodist or Presbyterian. Then moving to Omaha could not find a good chruch fit, and actually found some very cliquish churches. As I knew I was headed for divorce I found a church the ex liked, very conservative. Post divorce I left that church and discovered many churches are not welcoming of single females of a certain age. So, getting away from the church community I took a look at what the church taught and what it's acts are. Then a friend had me watch Zeitgeist, and it was like the blinders came off.

I have a general idea how much my ex makes and made, and though he's not that far up but not that far away. However post divorce, even with all the stress, I don't regret getting out for one minute. Money isn't everything, but I'm hella happier now. Life ain't a bed of roses by any means, but I don't have to deal with thorns either.

I love salads. I use fresh tomatoes from my garden, and sweet peppers, quinoa, corn, cabbage, carrots, or depends what I've got on hand. I add a variety of nuts. I make a variety of dressings. Depending on the dressing I may add avocado (if it isn't in the dressing) and fresh herbs. Summer salads are fun, and largely dependent upon my imagination and what is available in the garden or at the farmer's market.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
