Are atheist/agnostic people more susceptible to depression?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 31, 2017:
I have endured depression as a believer and as an atheist. It was worse when I was a believer and thought that god didn't give a damn about me. Then when I figured out there is no god I still have issues with anxiety and depression. The main contributor to the anxiety/depression has been eliminated, but I still have moments. If you haven't had any depression, good for you. Just because you can't see it and don't understand it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It is brain chemistry, and situations, and probably genetics. My theory is that if I walk into an office of 100 people and ask who is dealing with depression, 75 hands will go up. 10 won't because they haven't figured it out yet. And one or more persons may have to take time off work to deal with their depression. My ex was very angry for a long time, that was his manifestation of depression.

5 years ago I moved into a house with a split entry foyer. The garage, laundry room and family room is basement level. I had lived for 5 years in ground floor apartments, and due to some injuries I was out of shape. I fully believe the stairs have saved my life. I have to take stairs several times a day, I had to get into better shape. I did some back sliding again, working too many hours and not exercising at all, so I know I need to get some kinks worked out again. However, -8 degrees this morning isn't going to help Once summer is here I will be back in the garden again.

I'm frequently alone but rarely lonely. And tomorrow we're going to wake up and relearn the same lessons and move forward because that is what we do. Good post!

There is no middle ground in the poll. It wasn't the best year for me, it wasn't fabulous or horrific. I got through, I'm still employed, my health is reasonably good. However, Sammy Grace (grandchild) is thriving, my kitty makes me laugh, and I'm still employed, and I made a quilt, read a stack of really good books. Could be better, could be lots worse.

Single or Partnered, looking or not?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 30, 2017:
Single, looking but I am cognizant that the odds are hugely slim. When I first considered divorce I read an article that said most men in their 50s and above were looking for "nurses with purses". That might not be entirely true, but I've had a couple of dates expire on me. And being a liberal non religious person in a conservative state, the available pool of men I want to spend time with is incredibly small.

HippieChick58 comments on Dec 29, 2017:
For those of you who hate your jobs or the company drama, I recommend a website called Askamanager.com She is an HR person who has a well written blog and posts many times a day. Great read, and great information. She tells you how to job search, how to write your resume and cover letter. Office politics, gossip, culture, and so much more. People write in with questions and she answers them, and readers can comment. Wonderful supportive community. And if you think your workplace is messed up, she can show some that are worse. Even if you like where you are, Askamanager is still a good read. I check it out at least twice a day, and usually before i head over here.

I tried to be a good christian wife and mother, and when the marriage broke up tried to keep connected to the church. The church has no use for single mature women. I spent 25+ years as a stay at home mom. We also moved frequently (ex was military, and I was when we married.) I did not have skills for a good job, so staying home with the kids was a good choice for us. I should have started taking college courses when we finally had the stability of a metropolitan area and children in school, however I put it off. I hit the point where I knew the marriage had to end and I had to be ready so I got an Associate's degree. I wish I had gone further, but hindsight is 20/20. My girls (I don't have sons) were encouraged to get their degree and get a job as in this day and age it is hard to have a one income family. I think each couple needs to make that decision, and child care is frightfully expensive. And there is nothing wrong with a stay at home dad.

I assume your BF is about the same age as you are. You're very young all things considered and I gotta tell you there are lots more good men out there. At 20 you're still figuring stuff out, science will tell you your brain isn't fully mature for about 5 more years. You will be a different person at 25 then you are now. I don't think it is unfair for him to break up with you, people move on all the time. Seriously why would you want to hang on to someone who doesn't fit anymore. Give yourself some time to get to know who you are. Become the best you. You don't need a man to complete you. Enjoy your singleness and take time to find the right fit. There are worse things than being alone, like being in an unhappy relationship. Nurture you, What have you wanted to do that he didn't want to do? Do that now.

Google can be dangerous. From the last trumpet ministries: The World Book Encyclopedia defines "Christmas" as follows: "The word Christmas comes from "Cristes Maesse", an early English phrase that means "Mass of Christ." (1) It is interesting to note that the word "Mass", as used by the Roman Catholics, has traditionally been rejected by the so-called Protestants, such as Lutherans, Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Pentecostals and so on. The word "Mass" is strictly a Catholic word and thus, so is "Christ-Mass." the word "Mass" in religious usage means a "death sacrifice." The impact of this fact is horrifying and shocking; for when the millions of people are saying, "Merry Christmas", they are literally saying "Merry death of Christ!" There is so much more following and makes me glad to be out of that culture.
Here's the story. 6,000 years ago, an old, bearded, White dude who spoke perfect English, created ...

I don’t know if this guy was just clowning or if he was serious, but I got a good laugh out of it....

I have no sympathy for this idiot. It sounds like he was suckered twice. I wish he was an isolated incident, but there are too many half brained people like him in the world. Wake up and smell the coffee!

Can an atheist be a racist? What are your views on racism?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 25, 2017:
Of course. Atheism and racism are separate issues. Being an atheist I don't believe in God. Being a racist is behaving in a manner that says to you people with skin color or ethnicity unlike your own are not equal to you and sub human. To me racism is the ultimate ignorance, whereas to be atheist is a measure of intelligence.
I'm an Atheist, but being here alone tonight, my loved ones dead or very far away really sucks. ...

Christmas is a hard time for many, and the incessant advertising that you should be jolly and bright doesn't help. I feel your pain and hope it gets better. Are there other lonely people in your area you can connect with and make plans with them? Family does not have to be blood. I was alone most of yesterday, I had some projects I worked on. Keeping busy helps in so many ways.
I like Christian music. Do you see a problem with that?

There is one Christmas song that I might hurt you if I had to hear it more than once. The Christmas Shoes is the name of the song. For pity sake Jesus doesn't care what shoes your mama goes to heaven in, if she goes to heaven in any clothing at all or even goes to heaven!! I haven't heard it yet this year so I had mostly forgotten about it, Which is why I changed my radio station so I wouldn't hear it. Anything but that song. K?

Don't put yourself in the grave yet!! I'm older than you are. Bronchitis can knock you off your game though. It will get better, just get out in the sunshine and let your body heal. I will be online part of the day, I will join my youngest to see the grandbaby's first true Christmas and first birthday. We had a family celebration on Saturday, but they're going to reprise tomorrow and invited me over. The down side is my ex will be there, but we're amicable. I leave those gatherings going "oh yeah, now I remember why we got a divorce." Then late afternoon I will meet up with Humanist friends for a Chinese dinner.
Happy Christmas to all my non-religious friends! (And also to any Christians who might be lurking ...

My opinion is if it makes you happy, gives you peace and you don't try to force me to participate I am swell with it!
What’s something you know you do differently than most people?

I am not a TV watcher. I cut the cable off during the Iowa primary when I looked up and saw Ted Cruz's face in my living room. I have no idea what is current or popular on TV right now. Same as movies. I don't read the local newspaper as it is a conservative rag. I also read lots of books. I dated a guy once who told me he hadn't read a book since high school. That relationship did not last long. And then there is the whole not christian thing. I am also a quasi vegetarian, usually don't eat meat, I grow some of my own vegetables, I recycle food scraps with a compost bin and a worm box in my pantry. I don't use chemical concoctions to clean my self or my house, I make my own soaps and cleaners, and lip balms. And now I realize why I will be single for the rest of my life.

I think we need the get the heck out of that situation and let them work it out politically. One person one vote, demand all have rights and equal treatment under the law. Wouldn't it be weird if it worked.
Hello all members. I think that religions holidays are a little bit weird for us!

I haven't had any issues with the bible thumpers. I work with several faith based organizations and they haven't been pushy. I don't say Merry Christmas, and when I hear it I reply with Happy Holidays to you. When/if I am out and about and am given holiday wishes I just reply "thank you." I don't pick fights, but I don't get out of the way very fast, but I haven't had any issues.
Do you like rituals, routines, and traditions?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 24, 2017:
i need routines to keep everything going. Recently I had to make some changes to my routine, it is not necessarily going well... They're not rituals, and there is nothing spiritual about it, just needing to be on autopilot so life runs more smoothly.
