Sunday schools. Is it a form of child abuse?
HippieChick58 comments on Jun 25, 2019:
I would say it would depend on the denomination. I was involved with several church's VBS (vacation bible school) programs when I was a good xian wife. We looked at many programs, some really tried to scare the love of god into the children. Truly some bordered on abusive. We chose other programs. I also substituted for the SS programs, very benign. BUT, I was always with a fairly liberal church, mostly UMC, and they don't play games like that.
Ok today's minor feature.

I need that. I can see the porch from the living room. The door is down half a flight of stairs. If I'm expecting you the door is unlocked. The kids have the code to the garage. I'm not going to go down the stairs to tell you to go away, I'm just going to ignore you until you wander off on your own.
I feel like no matter how I word this, I will come out looking bad, but here it goes.

Pushing back against hoaxers: Father of boy killed in Sandy Hook massacre wins defamation suit | ...
HippieChick58 comments on Jun 22, 2019:
HARTFORD, Conn. — The father of a victim of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre has won a defamation lawsuit against the authors of a book that claimed the shooting never happened — the latest victory for victims' relatives who have been taking a more aggressive stance against conspiracy theorists. The book, "Nobody Died at Sandy Hook," has also been pulled from shelves to settle claims against its publisher filed by Lenny Pozner, whose 6-year-old son Noah was killed in the shooting. "My face-to-face interactions with Mr. Pozner have led me to believe that Mr. Pozner is telling the truth about the death of his son," Dave Gahary, the principal officer at publisher Moon Rock Books, said Monday. "I extend my most heartfelt and sincere apology to the Pozner family." A Wisconsin judge issued a summary judgment Monday against authors James Fetzer and Mike Palacek, a ruling that was separate from the settlement between Pozner and the book's publisher. A trial to decide damages has been set for October. Pozner has been pushing back for years against hoaxers who have harassed him, subjected him to death threats and claimed that he was an actor and his son never existed. He has spent years getting Facebook and others to remove conspiracy videos and set up a website to debunk conspiracy theories. Lately, the fight has been joined by others who lost relatives in the Dec. 14, 2012, school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. After quietly enduring harassment and ridiculous assertions for years, some have changed their approach, deciding the only way to stop it is to confront it. Their efforts have turned the tables on the hoaxers, including Alex Jones, host of the conspiracy-driven Infowars website. Robbie Parker, whose 6-year-old daughter Emilie was among 20 first-graders and six educators killed at Sandy Hook, spent years ignoring people who called him a crisis actor. His family moved to the West Coast, but still the harassment didn't stop. He would get letters from people who found his address. He was once stopped in a parking garage by a man who berated him and said the shooting never happened. "You are taught when you are young that you ignore bullies and eventually they will leave you alone," Parker said. "But as time went on, and my other girls were getting older, I realized they weren't stopping and some of this was getting worse and getting more personal." Parker is now part of a lawsuit against Jones, has testified before Congress and pushed for changes on social media platforms, such as YouTube, which announced this month it will prohibit videos that deny the Sandy Hook shooting and other "well-documented events." "It wasn't until the lawsuits and until it became a mainstream news story that people realized they were ...

I saw a posting on FB in a craft group I'm a member of, one woman said her husband "gave her permission to purchase..." and I almost responded but kept my thoughts to myself. Even when I was married I didn't ask permission or wait for permission to spend money. Pro: no one stealing covers or pulling them away from me. No one else's stuff to sort through. Con: No help for much of anything, I do have the kids but they don't live here. o one to blame stuff on. No one to discuss decisions that need to be made except getting the kids involved. No hugs for days at a time.
Watch out for this member. Screen tells all.

For those with hearing impairments, restaurant noise isn’t just an irritation.
HippieChick58 comments on Jun 19, 2019:
(Franziska Barczyk/for The Washington Post) By Joyce Cohen June 17 at 12:00 PM It was supposed to be a joyful family gathering. Last spring, Kim Powers-Brown took an overnight train from her home in eastern Washington state to join her relatives at a restaurant near Seattle. Because of her hearing difficulties — she cannot understand speech amid background noise — the group of four requested a quieter spot. “The waitress said no, that side of the restaurant was closed and she was the only waitress on duty — it would be too much trouble,” Powers-Brown said. The family was led to a corner table, with a speaker playing music overhead. She couldn’t understand a word. Her brother demanded they sit in the quieter closed section. “I begged him not to embarrass me,” said Powers-Brown, who was born partially deaf and wears a hearing aid in one ear. [Why I will start including accessibility information in my restaurant reviews] ut we were still treated rudely,” she said. “It was very uncomfortable. I felt terrible that our get-together meal was such a disaster because of my needs.” Under Title III of the Americans With Disabilities Act, restaurants — as places of public accommodation — must accommodate disabilities. But what if the disability is a hearing impairment, and the request is for a lower volume? On this issue, the law has largely remained silent. Hard-of-hearing diners report a vast range of responses when they seek softer music or quieter seating. Sometimes the music is turned down or off, and sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes it is even turned up. Maybe the volume is declared unchangeable, set by corporate overseers. Or there’s no available seating far from the clattering kitchen, the droning ventilation, the hearty partyers. Powers-Brown, 60, who is earning a library degree, rarely dines out with anyone but her husband. She never even thought to request quiet. “I was brought up to adjust to others,” she said. Instead of struggling to converse over a meal, she reads. The law, though, requires “full and equal enjoyment in places of public accommodation,” said Daniel Fink, a retired Los Angeles doctor and a noise activist. His paper on the disability-rights aspects of ambient noise was presented at a recent meeting of the Acoustical Society of America. “I can guarantee that people with hearing impairments don’t fully enjoy noisy restaurants,” he said. Pisco y Nazca in the District, where dining-room noise levels last fall measured 95 decibels, or about as loud as a power mower. (Deb Lindsey/for The Washington Post) Restaurants these days are louder than ever, to the point where critics (led by The Post’s Tom Sietsema) check volume levels and diners grouse about them....

"alternative" treatments for anxiety/depression?
HippieChick58 comments on Jun 18, 2019:
I do meditation, and it does take a while to get the control over your monkey brain. I know it helps me because when I meditate my resting heart rate falls. When I stopped meditating my heart rate climbed with my anxiety levels. I wear a fit bit so I have the feedback and can track my RHR. It is just one measure of health. I use an app called CALM, it has daily meditations and other meditations aimed at specific topics, I remember that flight anxiety is one, better sleep. I tried sage smudging, I just thought my house smelled like BBQ for over a week.

We've been having an extended conversation via PM. Ahhh sigh, you've done broken my heart! ;) I don't get the scammer vibe, just lonely guy.
Remember this or do you still use them?

I spit shined many a pair of Army boots, I was in before the Jungle boot. I still have polish, gotta shine the shoes up from time to time.

Is Iowa, New South Wales Australia a real place? I can't find it on Google Maps. Rather contradictory, doesn't believe in any gods, but does believe in Jesus. English is not great, pictures look like a real dad kinda guy. However, the rest looks like total scammer.
This answers one question I have heard from some concerned citizens.
HippieChick58 comments on Jun 13, 2019:
I think make them clean latrines (toilets/restrooms) with a toothbrush. Also make them take critical thinking classes until they are able to be responsible, informed citizens.
Love these tiny Trump pics

His picture looks really familiar, but it didn't pop on Tin Eye. He gives me the heebie jeebies, but I can't say scammer for sure.

When I was indoctrinated, they told us the husbands should be the decision makers and heads of households. I passed that on to my now ex and left the decisions to him. That lasted about 3 hours if that long. He may have been a Major but I was the General and he didn't like and didn't want to know most parts of what I did.

Is he too careful or just being very respectful. I think he is a welcome change from the likes of the sleezeball in chief Der Donald and other of his ilk.
Yes, menaretrash, but the good kind.

I had a cat that hopped into an empty drawer in the kitchen when we were moving in, and then hopped out the back of the drawer. I could hear her, but I couldn't find her. I was frantic!

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
