Why are so many people on this site still obsess on religion?

I agree, I'd much rather have real bennies. But I also want to acknowledge to military families that I **know** your sacrifice and I appreciate it. Seriously, it makes my lead craycray when I talk to people with Tricare and I tell them I appreciate their service, especially the female soldiers and Air Force personnel. We gets lots of families from Offutt AFB using the hospital I work at. I wore that uniform for more than 6 years and then I was a "camp follower" for 12 more years. I know what it is to live far from family, I know what it is to move every few years. I know what it is to have the military member deployed for long periods of time. I know how to single parent because of the military. To me when I say Thank you for your service, I am saying I understand the struggle, I've been there, and I will vote to do better for you. Yeah, if it is a politician I'm going to check his/her voting record and likely tune them out. And Cadet Bonespurs just needs to STFU.

I just let it roll. I am a boomer, I remember Kent State and the moon landing. I am a Hippie, ie my user name. I think this is blow back and we're going to get a bit of spray. How often have the millennials been put down for just for being? I got compared to a millennial. My Gen X supervisor told me I was acting like a whiny millennial by asking for feedback on what I did right.... That and a few other things were an awakening. I think the anger is directed at the Gen X. I have three children that are millennials. They are angry. They are a product of their upbringing and now they are getting shat on by Gen X and Boomers. They may never be able to retire. They will likely not have SS or Medicare. I'd like to slap all the conservative rethuglican members of my generation and ask them what the hell they are thinking. They have become corporate mindless bots. They have missed our calling. My parent's generation, the Greatest Generation is rolling in their graves over what the f--king president is doing. There is just tons of anger out there, and I don't blame the millennials for being scared and angry. They're overloaded. Don't respond in anger. Let them know we're working for the same cause.

Anyone think we need a church of Atheism/Agnosticism in Saint Louis?
HippieChick58 comments on Nov 9, 2019:
Atheists/Agnostics/Freethinkers tend NOT to be joiners. I have a book club as part of my Humanists group that meets on Sundays at 12:30 a restaurant. We call it our "church." It fills some of the functions of church for us. But church per se, and meeting sunday mornings early, oh hell no. We aren't going to play that game.

For me, intimacy has always been connected with commitment.
HippieChick58 comments on Nov 9, 2019:
Intimacy to me means that I can trust someone with all my darkest deepest secrets and fears. There has to be a foundation of trust, affection, mutual respect, and dedication. I'd like my next relationship to last forever. In most patriarchal societies marriage lasts because the penalties to the women for leaving the relationship are harsh. Most women will not leave their children behind. People change all the time. My ex became far more conservative, started listening to Fox news non stop. I became more liberal, and when it became apparent that I was not first in his life, or even among the top 5 I left. He did not see anything wrong, nor did his church. When I left him I pretty much left the church. I will never remarry, but I'd like a long term commitment someday. But at my age in my location I don't think that is realistic.
How do you deal with Christmas?
HippieChick58 comments on Nov 9, 2019:
I mostly ignore it. I don't decorate. I switch to a radio station that does not play much xmas music. My "usual" station starts playing it 24/7 next week. My concession to the season and the grand children is to make a xmas tree quilt that I do need to finish very soon. That is seasonal as well as useful. My family does a gift exchange, and we will get together on xmas day for the holiday celebration as well as granddaughter's birthday.

The reality is I'm not meeting anyone so it just doesn't matter. And I'm not holding my breath that it is going to change.

After many years of working a variety of shifts, it doesn't affect me very much any more. 5 years ago I was working 12 hour night shifts, and have a huge variety of other shifts. My almost 3 year old granddaughter was with me on Sunday, she was a little off of her usually sunny but challenging disposition. I am thinking the change has affected her. Apparently she had a major meltdown mid morning. And it is weird now that it is almost daylight, so no more starting the drive to work in the dark, at least for a while.

At the end of the day all that matters is that we did what was best for ourselves, naysayers be damned. Now I will tell you that we all grow all the time, and we often grow in different directions than our friends do. It is unusual to have a 42 year friendship, but just because it is old doesn't mean it is holy or sacred. If it has outlived its function it is wise to end it. To thine ownself be true. And if you don't advocate for you, who will? I think you did good, and I think you have grown more. You may still mourn the loss of the friendship, just as we all mourn the loss of our youth. But with the relief you feel the mourning will not be long, and you're better off for ending it. You go girl, you're working on you!

HippieChick58 comments on Oct 28, 2019:
https://thehumanist.com/magazine/january-february-2012/first-person/what-about-hope The middle-aged woman in a dark red sweater looked withdrawn and forlorn. I had been answering questions from the audience after presenting a talk called “Humanism As a Source of Inspiration and Meaning.” She raised her forearm just slightly to indicate she had a question. Her question—and my inability to satisfy her with an answer—haunted me for weeks. “What about hope?” she’d asked. Undaunted by the aura of hopelessness in her tone, I answered brightly: “The humanist worldview is filled with hope. We may be made of matter, but we decide what matters. It is through meaningful human action that a blank computer screen can become a poem, that slavery can become freedom. We can help others, alleviate suffering, and experience beauty. Humanism is not just the rejection of an idea. Humanism is an affirmation. It is a positive, clear-eyed response to our one world. It is saying ‘yes’, not saying ‘no.'” “I don’t see how that helps me have hope,” she said, monotone. I went into high gear, and tried a different answer. “Humanism is about possibilities. Without some grand supernatural plan or destiny, the future is open. Possibility means the door for hope and change and goodness is open. Possibilities can lead to progress, in the world and in our individual lives. It is a positive psychological message. We have choices in how to shape our lives. We can live with caring and compassion. We can invest ourselves in worthy goals. We don’t need anything supernatural for that. The fact that we can try to change ourselves, other people, and the world—and make it a better place through reason and compassion—is a fundamental wonder of being human, and can be celebrated. It is a cause for hope, and wisdom.” “Okay,” she said. She was polite but unconvinced. I don’t know what personal trauma, life events, or innate characteristics made the questioner long for hope, but clearly she’s not alone in seeking to satisfy this deep human need. Religion, in part, peddles hope. Hope also wins elections and sells products. The question is—for someone who is currently without hope—are the kinds of secular answers I proffered going to be enough on a personal, emotional, and psychological level? I realize now that philosophical concepts may be too abstract for some who feel despondent. She needed a personal answer. What about hope for her? Humanism has a solid foundation. We have secular dreams of a better tomorrow, and a track record of positive social change. But do we have answers on a personal level? Do we have a fulfilling substitute for “God loves you” or, for the bereaved, “don’t worry, you’ll meet again ...

Arkansas does come off as highly conservative xian and somewhat illegal regarding the 10 Commandment statues. Nebraska is bad enough, I wouldn't do well in the BuyBull belt.
This says much about him

He believes he is a law unto itself and "the law" that governs the land does not apply to him.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
