Straight from the Internet.... 2018 is a Weird Year for Catholics.
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 3, 2018:
It looks like it is also an efficient year, multitasking.
Although, this could just as easily go in the philosophy section as well.
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 2, 2018:
Awwww, and he's a cute boy too!
I believe in the power of faith.
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 2, 2018:
I don't know if I would call that faith, confidence maybe. I would ask faith in WHAT? Is it God giving you that sale? Or is it your preparation, your personality, charisma? Or your BS? :)
So, I got scolded by some “Free the Nipple” advocates (who I fully support) because they promote...
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 2, 2018:
My grandfather told me that men liked boobs because they never got over the urge to suckle. But its a really tough call. Nipple stimulation causes the uterus to contract which helps the uterus to shrink down after giving birth. However, it also is pleasurable. So, what about the men who like women's tushes? I think it comes down to that we are all sexual beings who are wired differently, we need to respect each other's space and rights, and for Zeus' sake let the moms feed their babies when and where it is needed without getting your shorts in a wad. We're grown ups, we should act like it.

10 New Year's Resolutions You Can Steal from Philosophers
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 2, 2018:
First of all, it has been below zero most of the year, but I supposed I could go to the mall, however the temptation there.... Hmmmm. I am however good at examining my life, it keeps me awake far too many nights. I do read a new book each month, at least one. One of my favorite says is "You're never to old to become who you were meant to be." I'm not fond of change although yes it can be good. And I do own my life, all of it. That is a good article, thanks for sharing.
When should anatomy/health/sex education be introduced into a child’s life?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 2, 2018:
I was always honest and direct with my girls, we called things by their rightful names. I have some amazing adult children now. You start from birth, it is normal and natural, our bodies are in no way shameful, they are beautiful in all shapes and sizes. Keep age appropriate and honest.
Cemeteries, creepy, or peaceful?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 2, 2018:
Cemeteries are OK, more peaceful than creepy except at night. I had a friend who grew up in a house on the cemetery property, her dad was the caretaker. They used to go out after dark to spy on "courting" couples, and scare the beejeesus out of them if they could. Cemeteries are historical, but they are also a terrific waste of space. In Germany you get buried for X years and then your spot is reused for the next occupant.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 1, 2018:
I don't know that I was ever in the angry non-believer stage, though others may disagree. I've been mildly annoyed that I put up with that crap for so long, but I am also grateful because now I have the knowledge and ammunition to shoot that stuff down when it flies by.
What makes you break out your soapbox?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 1, 2018:
To begin with: Women's rights, especially to ownership of her body. That black lives do matter. That the police force needs to be demilitarized. That guns should be as regulated as cars. Single payer health care needs to come to the US, and Der Donald is a pile of horse doodoo.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 1, 2018:

What is your New Years Day meal this year?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 1, 2018:
I went out for breakfast this morning which put me in a carb coma but helped me to get a nap. I have been in a severe sleep deficit so the nap was the plan. And this evening I baked some brie bites in a crust that must have come from Trader Joe's. They were taking up space in the freezer. It was that or a peanut butter sandwich, and I needed the freezer space (but oh my golly I could have used the deck it's -5 right now.)
Did you experience Religious Trauma Syndrome in leaving religion?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 1, 2018:
I think my leaving religion was so gradual that it just got lumped in with the other traumas/changes going on in my life at the time. We moved to Omaha, I realized I needed to get some sort of training to be able to get a job and get a divorce, menopause, divorce, economy tanking and job loss, unemployment, and heartbreak. I discovered that most church congregations do not appreciate mature single females in their midst, even liberal churches were not very welcoming. It was a rough few years. I lost some friends, but I found myself. I think it was a good trade.
I did something I thought I would never do.
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 1, 2018:
Yes, go!! What do you have to lose besides a few hours.
So now that ya'll have had the night to reflect, do you feel more motivated to face the year?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 1, 2018:
this pretty much says it all but you could add a few years.
Who Said There Are No Atteists In Foxholes?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 1, 2018:
I think that came about because in periods of extreme stress we're likely to invoke a deity. It is irrational and the "believers" take it to believe we all recognize the deity, that our subconscious recognizes the deity. I believe we're just trained that way. Last winter I was in a slide on ice and trying to avoid the car in front of me. I was swearing in German which is not my native language. When my kids were little I'd swear in German because they didn't understand it and if they did repeat it no one else would understand it.
After 8 weeks on the site I've made some great friends but as far as meeting a guy for long term ...

Am I the only one who is super excited about the holidays being over?!
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 1, 2018:
My "holidays" aren't truly over. Two more family birthdays to get through, mine being one of them. Since I don't go overboard for the holidays I neither love nor hate, I just get through. Another day, another dollah.
So now that ya'll have had the night to reflect, do you feel more motivated to face the year?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 1, 2018:
I may be better equipped/motivated to face the new year after a nap.
Has the metoo movement affected your dating life or the way you interact with people of the opposite...
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 1, 2018:
I think open and honest communication, and consideration that we are equals is the key. For me, a guy telling me he has a hard on is not sexy or welcome, and while not necessarily harassment it isn't going to further the relationship. If I'm connecting with someone and they feel it too, and ask, do you want to go further... that inspires my confidence. Men can't just assume that they are going to get laid, or worse demand to get laid. As soon as a man plays the power card its outright harassment, whatever kind of power he thinks he has over me.

Is in it Strange That We Go Online Looking for Honesty?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 31, 2017:
Used to be family or friends would set you up, or you'd meet someone through work or church. I've moved so often I don't have lots of connections anywhere, nor family besides my kids in the area. I don't meet single men my age at work and I don't go to church. So online dating is the only way for me to meet single men. And the success has not been overwhelming. However, if you don't try the odds will be worse. Hope springs eternal.
Did you ever dream about something and it came to fruition?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 31, 2017:
I had a very real seeming dream while pregnant with the youngest that it was a boy. I have all girls. At one time after I started a antidepressant medication I dreamed my clothes were hanging on a clothesline, and hopped down and started frolicking in my yard. I haven't had a clothesline in my adult life. So petty much I've never had a dream come true.
Can you recommend a new hobby to me?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 31, 2017:
I sew, crochet, knit, counted cross stitch and needlepoint, I make soaps, lotions, lip balms. I garden. I read. I have many many hobbies and activities. What are you looking for? Most of mine keep you indoors and not really active. I finished a quilt top this weekend, it will go in to the quilt shop next weekend to be quilted. So it is time to start a new quilt top. It can be an expensive hobby to start up.

Would you marry for money or more freedom?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 31, 2017:
I will never remarry, there is no financial benefit if I marry, unless he gives me a couple million. I'm more looking for a very long term shack up.
What has been the dumbest religious comment/response/statement you have ever heard personally?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 31, 2017:
People can be so blind and ignorant, sad really.
Do you think that some atheists have the same blind devotion to science as they do to religion?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 31, 2017:
I don't think science encourages blind devotion. Science welcomes questioning and testing. Science is challenged all the time. I too prefer not to take medications, not for "science" but because I don' t trust big pharma. Big Pharma does not want cures, they want customers. Just tell them Question EVERYTHING, and follow the money.
Are atheist/agnostic people more susceptible to depression?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 31, 2017:
I have endured depression as a believer and as an atheist. It was worse when I was a believer and thought that god didn't give a damn about me. Then when I figured out there is no god I still have issues with anxiety and depression. The main contributor to the anxiety/depression has been eliminated, but I still have moments. If you haven't had any depression, good for you. Just because you can't see it and don't understand it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It is brain chemistry, and situations, and probably genetics. My theory is that if I walk into an office of 100 people and ask who is dealing with depression, 75 hands will go up. 10 won't because they haven't figured it out yet. And one or more persons may have to take time off work to deal with their depression. My ex was very angry for a long time, that was his manifestation of depression.

HippieChick58 comments on Dec 31, 2017:
5 years ago I moved into a house with a split entry foyer. The garage, laundry room and family room is basement level. I had lived for 5 years in ground floor apartments, and due to some injuries I was out of shape. I fully believe the stairs have saved my life. I have to take stairs several times a day, I had to get into better shape. I did some back sliding again, working too many hours and not exercising at all, so I know I need to get some kinks worked out again. However, -8 degrees this morning isn't going to help Once summer is here I will be back in the garden again.

What, not who, makes life worth living?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 31, 2017:
The knowledge that I am setting an example of how to live for my children and grandchildren. It makes my day when they tell me they're proud of me for forging ahead. Making a difference in the world, doing what I can to make it a better place.
What I learned in 2017:
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 31, 2017:
"Life is" is something I used to tell my kids. And my other is "People are". If I had a nickle for every time I've been wrong, I might be able to retire next week. I always own it. I'm wrong, big deal, I'm human and therefore fallible. And cats... they're the most wonderful and vexing of all pets, I will never voluntarily live without one. I'm frequently alone but rarely lonely. And tomorrow we're going to wake up and relearn the same lessons and move forward because that is what we do. Good post!
One of my first questions that couldn’t be answered.
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 31, 2017:

Personally, Was 2017 A Good Year For You Or A Bad Year? Explain Why.
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 30, 2017:
There is no middle ground in the poll. It wasn't the best year for me, it wasn't fabulous or horrific. I got through, I'm still employed, my health is reasonably good. I expect if I checked I had a record of lack of sleep and anxiety. Didn't find love, Der Drumpf is still president. However, Sammy Grace (grandchild) is thriving, my kitty makes me laugh, and I'm still employed, and I made a quilt, read a stack of really good books. Could be better, could be lots worse.
Secular humanism?

Does the lack of beleif in an afterlife bring you fear or comfort?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 30, 2017:
My DNA will carry on, I have kids and now grandkids. I will leave a legacy for them, there will be stuff around for decades that SamSam and those yet to come will say "oh Grammy made this for me." That gives me comfort, that is my afterlife.
Single or Partnered, looking or not?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 30, 2017:
Single, looking but I am cognizant that the odds are hugely slim. When I first considered divorce I read an article that said most men in their 50s and above were looking for "nurses with purses". That might not be entirely true, but I've had a couple of dates expire on me. And being a liberal non religious person in a conservative state, the available pool of men I want to spend time with is incredibly small.

If I die this weekend my coworkers won't find a mess, My house on the other hand needs several days of work, and that is likely going to wait until I retire or move, and the retirement better happen first.

HippieChick58 comments on Dec 29, 2017:
I'm not afraid of death, I am concerned about pain and suffering. If I can go cleanly and quickly that would be my preference. My mom died when I was 14, she was 45. Yeah, it used to be comforting to think she was looking down on us, and I'm sure she wasn't happy about the step bitch my dad married. And when I lost a baby it was comforting to think that mom was there to welcome her to heaven. The reality is, heaven is a fairy tale.

Do you feel 'stuck' in your job?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 29, 2017:
For those of you who hate your jobs or the company drama, I recommend a website called Askamanager.com She is an HR person who has a well written blog and posts many times a day. Great read, and great information. She tells you how to job search, how to write your resume and cover letter. Office politics, gossip, culture, and so much more. People write in with questions and she answers them, and readers can comment. Wonderful supportive community. And if you think your workplace is messed up, she can show some that are worse. Even if you like where you are, Askamanager is still a good read. I check it out at least twice a day, and usually before i head over here.
How Many Years or months have you been a Non Believer.
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 28, 2017:
I tried to be a good christian wife and mother, and when the marriage broke up tried to keep connected to the church. The church has no use for single mature women. Then all those little questions got louder. And god wasn't in any kind of hurry to help out when I was in a bind. Then I watched Zeitgeist, and read, and read, and read, and enlightenment dawned.

I strongly suggested my girls read it before they headed off to college. Every woman should read it IMHO. (or not especially humble)

HippieChick58 comments on Dec 28, 2017:
I am not stuck in my job, I'm struggling to hold on to it. I'm not terribly fast nor a fast learner. However I have some skills they really desire and what I do usually passes all the QA thresholds, so they are working with me. I like the corporate culture and I'm going to stick with it as long as they will keep me. But as soon as I get to a point where I think I can retire, I'm done. I talk to stressed out people who have had close encounters with the medical field and I am the contact to the money. I am a claims examiner for short term disability claims.

When I realized I needed to end that marriage I got an Associate's degree in HIM, and was prepared to enter the workforce and the economy tanked. Yeah, life did not work out how I planned, but I became adept at surviving.

1. I need a certain amount of alone time, depends on the day I have had or the project that has my attention. 2. I rarely watch TV. 3. The cat IS a person. She is my baby 4. I think I snore, I'm not sure because no one has complained of my snoring in a very long time, but then I've slept alone for a very long time. 5. Respect my kids. 6. There is a radio on somewhere in the house at all times. I have tinnitus, I keep the radio on to mask the ear noise. Sometimes it doesn't work. And frequently more than one radio. 7. No TV in the bedroom and I sleep with white noise and the ceiling fan on. Well, try to sleep. 8. I read lots of books, and sometimes stay up too late reading books. I read in bed. 9. I have very relaxed housekeeping standards. 10. I will never marry again, it would mess things up financially. However I am open to a very long term shack up. Why marry? 11. Don't leave the lid up.

HippieChick58 comments on Dec 28, 2017:
Sooo scripture tells us we are all god's creation and he loves each and every one of us. so how would he find his creation not worthy of him? And if he made you why didn't he endow you with faith in him? And if god is real he is a misogynist, and a truly mean SOB. Visit a children's cancer ward and tell me god loves them.... Anyone who allows small children to suffer is not someone I want in my life. Starving children, children who live in war torn regions, children with diseases why would anyone allow that? If god is all powerful how does evil exist?
Can you be agnostic and still think evil exists?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 27, 2017:
All I can say is: Donald Trump. Surely he is one of the most evil beings on the planet right now. I think evil may be part of mental illness, why would someone take joy in anyone suffering?
How important is romance in a relationship?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 27, 2017:
I think it depends on what you're looking for. It you want to live like roommates then romance is not needed. If you want a deeper relationship then you need romance or something like it. How to maintain, every individual is different. For me, doing stuff together helps build the relationship, but it depends on the stuff.
Parenting

I think I told my kids they could be anything they wanted to be within reason. With a 66 inch dad and 65 inch mom they were not likely to be tall. But if they were motivated to do the work they could learn to do almost any job.

Out of curiosity, how many people here are old fashioned?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 27, 2017:
I spent 25+ years as a stay at home mom. We also moved frequently (ex was military, and I was when we married.) I did not have skills for a good job, so staying home with the kids was a good choice for us. I should have started taking college courses when we finally had the stability of a metropolitan area and children in school, however I put it off. I hit the point where I knew the marriage had to end and I had to be ready so I got an Associate's degree. I wish I had gone further, but hindsight is 20/20. My girls (I don't have sons) were encouraged to get their degree and get a job as in this day and age it is hard to have a one income family. I think each couple needs to make that decision, and child care is frightfully expensive. And there is nothing wrong with a stay at home dad.
Opinions wanted: my now ex has suddenly converted to Christianity??
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 27, 2017:
I assume your BF is about the same age as you are. You're very young all things considered and I gotta tell you there are lots more good men out there. At 20 you're still figuring stuff out, science will tell you your brain isn't fully mature for about 5 more years. You will be a different person at 25 then you are now. I don't think it is unfair for him to break up with you, people move on all the time. Seriously why would you want to hang on to someone who doesn't fit anymore. Give yourself some time to get to know who you are. Become the best you. You don't need a man to complete you. Enjoy your singleness and take time to find the right fit. There are worse things than being alone, like being in an unhappy relationship. Nurture you, What have you wanted to do that he didn't want to do? Do that now.
Do we have a purpose in life?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 26, 2017:
My purpose was to raise three amazing daughters to adulthood. As long as they need me I will be happy to stick around. I grew up without a mom after age 14, I would not wish that on anyone. My girls still need me, as does the first grandchild, and a second en route. And just making it from one day to the next is purpose enough.
Am I living a total lie`
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 26, 2017:
Are you willing to live with the consequences of your actions? If you tell your Mama what is that going to do to her? If you continue living a lie what is that going to do to you? Mama might be OK with it because she loves you, but then again... If you have to give up scouting what will it do to you? If you continue to lead the scouts while not believing what will that do to you? If you come out what will that do to your position in the community? Tough position, good luck with figuring it out.
If you are not a Christian, is it alright to go to church?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 26, 2017:
Why shouldn't I go to church? As long as I am respectful of others it might be entertaining, or the music might be good. Last time I went to church was my daughter's wedding. I even read scripture without being stuck by lightening. The next time I go to church will likely be the grandbaby's baptism but I get the feeling my daughter isn't rushing that. I'm not going to make an effort to go to church, but if the kids request then I will be there. I've sat through movies I couldn't wait to get out of, I can handle a church service.
There is a connection between Bernie Sanders and Jesus. From my Facebook today.
